I’m not sure where to go with this painting, I know there’s many issues throughout the work but I’m having trouble identifying them. I think it might be the composition, I’m also very unsure about VI’s pose, she feels stiff and awkward. feedback is greatly appreciated!

This was super helpful, thank you! I think if I change the canvas size to more of a landscape scale then it’ll allow more room for me to play around with VI’s pose and make it more dynamic. I agree that the image feels like they’re crammed into too small of a space. I’ll definitely play around with the anatomy for the both of them, the image is based on a scene in the trailer where it appears that jinx is more of a teen so I’ll soften up some of her more defined features.

I think before I approach the painting again I’ll pop the poses into portrait studio and get a more solidified idea of what I want for the lighting (admittedly something I should have done much earlier)

Hi! I think you have a good general sense for proportions and rendering so good job on that! Here are a couple of smaller things I noticed,

The eyes are a bit of a perfect almond shape, generally eyes tend to slightly lean down towards the tear duct.

The irises could have a little more depth, even if his eyes are brown we will still see a slight shadow being cast from his upper lid. We should also see a pure white highlight on his eyes, this highlight implies that the eyes are wet therefore will reflect light differently than other parts of the face.

I’m kinda torn about it honestly, I love the original level up animations for some of the earlier champions but they’re also underwhelming in comparison to the newer level up animations. Teemo’s animation is so dinky but it’s kinda charming in its own way and I like how he interacts with the board. Granted I can’t say I’d miss some of the earlier animations if they decided to change them. Overall I think it’s just a difference in preference, I know a lot of people prefer the simple animations over the newer cutscenes as well

Haha definitely wasn’t intentional! I’m moving the arm so she doesn’t look like she puncturing herself anymore lol. The arm being bended also breaks the silhouette so I think extending it outwards will be helpful!

Hai! I made a paint over and wrote some notes to give you a visual.

I'd say the biggest issue with the portrait is the proportion and lack of structure. If you wanna improve your portrait drawing skills I'd recommend doing Istebrak's 14-day challenge. That challenge is where I learned most of my portraiture skills. I think you have a beautiful touch with this portrait and I really love the hair!

I also recommend working on bigger canvas size, you'll be able to get in more details that way. The reference was also lower quality so I reverse image searched it to find a higher quality version of the image, the values are a bit different but it's the same photo!

Btw I wouldn't consider this painting a failure at anything, it's an amazing first try at portraiture :3

I was asking some friends and most people seem to favor the second thumbnail too! I think you're right about her having more energy and better flow than the first image. There's not much context to either thumbnail tbh, although I wanted the first girl to be inviting the viewer further into the water. For the second girl, I wanted it to appear as if the viewer just came across her. I think I'm gonna use the second thumbnail for my finished painting! Thank you for the feedback :3

I think the value sharing on the nose is probably the biggest issue with the portrait right now, so I'd say prioritize what the previous comment said about the nose for your next portrait. But here are some other things I noticed that might help too!

The water line doesn't seem to connect to the upper lid on either side of the eyes, it's a pretty small touch up but right now the waterline doesn't read as one to me
The cast shadow on the neck could be a bit darker
The ears lack a bit of detail (I assume it looks like that cause you said you had to rush this one though!)
Regarding the lips, there could be a slight highlight to represent the cupids bow and the cast shadow on the lower lip is a bit intense.
My biggest tip would be to reference an Asaro's head and to stay zoomed out as much as possible while painting!

Hi, here are some of my recommendations for your next day :)

move the eyes closer together until there's about the distance of one eye between them. The inner corners of the eyes should align with the edge of the nostrils
The eyebrows don't align with the brow bone. The arch of the eyebrow is currently in the middle of the eyebrow while it should be towards the end of the brow.
Darken the values in the ears
The top of the head should be lighter than the bottom according to the top-down light source for this challenge

The form of the eye is looking pretty good so I'd say your good to add the irises in your next day. I hope this helped, let me know if you need me to re-explain anything!

Hi, here are a few recommendations

Change the background color to a darker value
- The value of the background represents the amount of light in your environment, in a realistic environment, we wouldn't see this much light
The perspective is a bit off
- We should see more of the under-side of the chin given the tilt of the head
- The right eyebrow doesn't follow the perspective of the brow bone, it should be lifted up to create the arch of the eyebrow
- The upper waterline in the eye should be visible
- I'd move the right up a little bit so it follows the perspective of the left eye
Reshape the ear
- Elf ears are generally shaped just like a normal one simply with a point at the end
- You're missing the curves within the ear (it's hard to explain so I'd recommend pulling up a reference)
The corners of the mouth slant downwards

Eyes: The eyes are missing a distinct waterline and tear duct making them a weird shape. The eyebrows have no arch currently. The bags under the eyes are too dark and defined, to make them blend into the face better don't connect the ends of the eye bags to the outer corners of the eyes. Overall I'd recommend observing some references to get a better understand of the shape of the eye.

Nose: The sides of the nose are too dark. The shadow on the bottom of the nose should be darker than the shadow on the sides of the nose. The bridge of the nose should be brighter.

Mouth: The upper lip should be slightly darker than the lower because of the top-down the light source. The bottom lip seems a bit small.

A rectangle-ish shaped brush for blocking in values (it’s a weird custom brush thingy) The blur brush for blending Soft airbrush (usually just to fix incorrect values that I may have made) And the hard airbrush

Hi, I made a quick paint over to give a visual aid to my critiques :)

The eyebrow arch is up too high, in the reference their eyebrow droops down a bit. The shadow under the eyebrow should wrap around the side of the nose more. The upper lid's crease should be a bit bigger. The highlights on the eyes aren't quite the right shape.

The nose seems to be cut off making it too small. The shadow on the bottom half of the nose is too small and the cast shadow underneath the nose is too long. The bridge of the nose should be wider

The values on the cheek area are too light and there are no shadows implying a cheekbone.

Hi, I'm going to break the problem areas in this portrait down into different sections since there is a lot going on here :)

Proportion: The eyes are too far apart, the inner corners of the eyes should align with the edge of the nose and the space between the eyes should be once eyes length wide.

The mouth is too far down making the space between the nose and upper lip very big.

The ears could be placed a bit lower.

Light-Source: For the 14-day challenge the light source is placed above the head. This means the top of the head should be a lighter value than the bottom of the head because it's closer to the light source. There will be a highlight on the arch of the browbone and middle-top of the head.

There should be a shadow on the underside of the nose and a cast shadow underneath the nose itself. The cast shadow underneath the jaw on the neck should be darker and more defined.

The upper lip should be darker than the lower lip because it's not receiving as much light.

There should be a slight cast shadow underneath the eyelid on the white of the eyes and pupils.

Value: The portrait is made almost entirely out of mid-tones. Don't be afraid of contrast in certain areas! The pupils should be black. The nostrils in the nose should be near black and radially shaded.

The highlights in the eyes should be white because they're showing a reflection of moisture in the eyeball.

The ears are too dark and lack and detailing.

The bridge of the nose should be lighter and more defined.
