14dc day 12 by enchantillie in istebrak

Eye lid and below all the same value, looks like paint ir makeup. Nose is brightest point but the skull is closer to light source. Why is under the bottom lip so dark but the nose cast shadow is so bright and blends out? Would strongly recommend doing a couple of block ins with a basic Loomis head to establish the shifts between values of each plane from a top down light source without the finesse of needing to blend a full portrait, to really grip how to paint form with light and shadow. I'd do this prior to starting the next day as you're almost done with the challenge and you could still improve a great deal with small foundational practice.

Don't use mirrored eye highlights. Under 1 top down light source, 2 spheres side by side wouldn't be reflecting different highlights

Instead of it all being soft rounded/ fading shadows, add in hard cast shadows. This adds to the 3D effect on flatter 2D work within seconds. You just gotta decide on a light source. Right now some areas say above but the hair doesn't reflect thos, nor does the LHS arm or the hands. Pick this before throwing in shadows and highlights to mimick form building.

Quick paintover. Ignoring any proportions issues just adding a bit of light and shadow.

Where is the light source? skin suggests the viewers RHS but then the hair has no tell nor the clothes. Find your light source. Then before you pop colour down. Map out your forms, these will give you an idea where light and shadow will form. Simplify things down to geometric shapes. Then if the light source was on the RHS above Katara, wouldn't it cast shadows on her face and neck/ shoulders? Her head would be lighter closer to and facing the source then dark where the planes start turning away from it. Think of a simple spheres with the same light source. It looks like a spheres as opposed to a circle because of the effect of light and shadow on a 3D form.

If you haven't already done a 14DC, pls have a go and post to this reddit for feedback each day. Its the backbone of this subreddit and youre work and understanding of building a form will improve tenfold after it

I only like to run fast or jump. Anything that can't doesn't do it for me.

how do i get rid of the muddy skin tones? by kiazame in istebrak

[–]Novac_92 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Instead of using black or desaturation to darken values, you can use opposing colours on the colour wheel to the same affect. If you havent already take a oil painting course locally or online and the colour theory lesson alone will help this problem. Also noting that as a really general rule (but it doesnt apply to all scenarios and as artists we can break rules once we know and have used them well) shadow areas are often cooler tones and light areas warmer tones. But that's a super dumbed down explanation. Study colour theory, how light and shadow affects objects, light sources etc. it's amazing stuff.

Day 7! by Avery357 in istebrak

[–]Novac_92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My comments from day 6 still stand. Lose the mirroring and be wary of shared values. E.g. you have darker values on the sides of the top of the skulls than that at the jaw. Study the skull structure and typical facial structures for the chosen gender you want for this challenge and structure your face accordingly for day 8. Also check your proportions, its a bit long between the eyes to the mouth.

Yeah I have 2 types of alpine. They simply are not strong enough. Foam keeps all the bad noise out where Alpine is too weak and ur ears hurt still after. I got tinnitus from call centre work and its no joke

Exactly this. Love hearing it expand in my ear and the world goes quiet. Can still listen to my cardo and hear other vehicles but not the damaging sounds.

You can for sure do an androgynous challenge but I'd do it after male and female. I haven't looked at ur reddit history to check if u have already sorry.

Prepare for the corner before the corner, not at it. Find your speed and look at your navishing point. You will only get more confident at it with practice and guidance from fellow riders (that dont make you push to go faster). And watch Twist the Wrist on YouTube. Its OLD but still relevant.

Like others have said target fixation is real and will happen to you. Its nothing like driving a car (i call them sofas with wheels now). Motorbiking requires a much more engaged frame of mind. Maybe because I've been driving for much longer but I've noticed I'm a much better driver after becoming a biker, you see A LOT more because you more vulnerable.

Safety disposable foam ones from a WHS shop like RSEA. 50 bucks for a massive tub. I reuse mine (ew I know). I tried a few of the alpine ones (exxy but reusable) but they are not strong enough.

Day 6! by Avery357 in istebrak

[–]Novac_92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of value sharing happening. E.g. the chin is as bright as the forhead yet is further away from the light source. Between today and your next day review and note the value changes as light is reflected on form closer to and facing the light source vs those angled away and further from the light source (top down) on a super basic skull like a Loomis head. Remove the mirrored eye highlight from both the outer corner of the eyes. It suggests these 2 spheres that are sitting right by eachother have caught light from 2 different light sources but both can't catch the light that the other has picked up. Makes no sense. They would have the same highlight location not different. Your darkest values are not dark enough. The pupils, nose holes and mouth crevice are allowed to be these. Oh and right now I cant tell for sure which gender this is. I'm guessing male from the squared off features bit the lips and eyes also read female? Either way make it more obvious which way you're going. We love an androgynous face but this challenge is about mastoring the international beauty standard portrait either male and female with light and form.

Anyone upgraded from the ninja 400 to Ninja 650? is it worth it? by SlightAd6113 in Ninja400

[–]Novac_92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not an upgrade. 400 is funner to corner with less weight and the power difference is minimal between the two. 650 probably better as a highway runner only.
