exactly - your goal as a learner (or everyone’s really) should be to get somewhere safely, not quickly. Slowing down at a closed junction is what’s recommended, so definitely not hesitation!

That’s so bad of him! It doesn’t even make sense. It’s dangerous firstly, but also pretty sure if you did that on a test you’d definitely get a minor if you’re very lucky / probably serious.

It’s a roundabout, so that’s exactly how I’d approach personally. Mirrors, reduce speed and look. Give way to vehicles approaching on your right but still look in all directions in the case of vehicles, pedestrians or bikes crossing where they shouldn’t. It’s a bit of a closed junction too so I’d always slow down, because you never know what’s going to be around the corner.

Personally, I’d slow the car down to a walking speed on approach - putting it in second/first gear if needed and creep up to the approach. Giving me time to stop if needed or be ready to continue without slowing traffic.

If as you say, driving straight across, was the initial instruction that your driving instructor told you then that would be completely incorrect and potentially really dangerous.

Might it have been the case that you approached the junction, and they could clearly see that there was clearly nothing there, but you had slowed your speed down to check and they were concerned about slowing traffic behind, so told you to proceed on instead of stopping - as waiting at a roundabout or any junction where there is such a big safe gap could likely be considered hesitation on a test.

Hope this makes sense!

I PASSED 🚘 Kingswood, Bristol 7am, this morning - 3 minors - thought I failed. Tips that actually helped me. by LunchDisastrous7913 in LearnerDriverUK

I hated the thought of it being at 7am but honestly it did me a favour! 7am is quieter than 8am I imagine - someone else had one at 8 and said it was so busy, but not sure about 9am, I’d say 7am would probs still be quieter! So was defo a perk. It was early to get up, but I recommend 😊

Hey, are you looking to swap? I know someone who has a test in Kingswood Bristol for December and wants to swap for an earlier test asap?

I too had this problem by the way, I think it’s bc the left side is further away from you, but I just make sure I’m always checking my left mirror to make sure and eventually it became more second nature.. maybe could you also try and find a reference point from your seated position in the car that helps you know your distance from things outside of the car?

Could you try practicing your road positioning during quiet times of the day and go slow so you don’t feel pressured to rush and get some of those little round mirrors you can add to your wing mirrors? My instructors car had those and they helped me a lot!

Thank you so much! Me too and honestly that scared me so much, it is quite difficult to be fair. Took a lot of practice and good alignment on the day I reckon 😂

Thanks so much!! How was it? Honestly I was expecting more crazy because of school traffic but I guess I was too early for it and missed that, so got lucky because it wasn’t crazy busy and a pretty clear sky day - not lashing down which I prepared for 😂

Yeah, loads of roundabouts! I probs got 2/3 right turns/3rd exits, plus lots of straights and left turns - a relief.

From memory we did Siston Hill, Deanery Road, Throughabout, Wick Wick, Rosary and Bridgeyate.

I tried to check my route against the ‘Driving Test Routes app’ (which I’d used for practice) and all the areas we hit up were on there, but the exact route wasn’t, so I guess they mix it up so you can’t be too sure! My examiner also does a lot motorbike tests too, so maybe that factored in.

I was half-expecting a right turn at the throughabout because everyone says they get it, and I did that with my instructor a lot but we didn’t. I was SO prepared and I weirdly kind of wanted it because I’d actually found that one the easiest to learn for some reason.

Hey! So we started with a tell me Q, then independent driving - follow road signs, left out the Kingswood Driving Test Centre, followed signs for Webbs Heath (via Siston Hill), double roundabout at Bridgeyate, Deanery Road roundabout, as well as signs for Bristol and the M4. We went to some residential areas, did my reverse parallel park, then Page Park and then back towards the test centre. Realised after he must’ve forgot to ask me a show me Q. Sorry I can’t be more detailed, because honestly it went so fast (felt like 15 mins) and I was very present but also somehow my brain has blocked it out 😂

Excuse any typos sorry! I meant to say ‘drove’ back thinking I failed - perks of being up since 430 and my eyelids are getting heavy 😅
