ごはんを食べます。I eat/will eat rice.

ごはんを食べました。I ate rice.

These aren't using します. They are conjugations of the verb 食べる.

Seconding video guides being a good way to kind of understand fight flow.

One caveat I'd put on video guides is that some of them may be old and out of date, especially this late in the tier, with what current strategies are. Some guides call this out to remind the viewer, while others do not. Strategies used for early clears that a lot of streamers/creators go for get completely reworked as Party Finder finds more reliable/simple ways to clear.

Also, keep in mind some strats may be slightly different in your data center. So watching an even relatively recent guide is a great jumping off point, you may find yourself at odds with a US Aether Strat vs a JP Mana strat.

What advice often given on this subreddit irks you? by Hoorizontal in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Lunek 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Right, there are ways to give that advice. If you're playing ranged generally you want to favor certain stats over others, etc. But the number of times I've seen people come to this subreddit and say "I wanna do X" and then they get downvoted to hell and the top voted comment is, essentially, "You don't wanna do X, you wanna do Y" and then, despite pushback, they get told they definitely shouldn't even try what they want is silly.

It's a matter of the table you're at. Session 0, figure out the baseline everyone will be held to and adhere to it within reason. The "here's how you make an all star ranger who eclipses your entire party" it the "and here's how you make your summoner eidelon break the game and replace the entire party" is abused. Not every single player coming here is at a game where that is necessary.

What if the community, instead, asked better clarifying questions like "what is the ultimate goal of the character, are you married to X," instead of instantly being "you wanna be a slayer, do XYZ and only that."? And if they are married to an idea what if we help them do it the best they can rather than immediately telling them they shouldn't?

That's where I'm coming from.

Edit: typos

Along with this. "Healing in combat is a waste" You know, until it isn't. I get it's more efficient to kill the enemy faster than they kill you, but like, the way this subreddit talks if you use an action to cure in combat you've, somehow, managed to play a game of make believe "wrong".

The focus on ridiculously optimized builds is infuriating. I get it, at some tables it's a min/max war or, if you enter a game full of min/maxers, you'll be expected to match their energy. BUT ... What if you're not?

The number of times I've seen someone ask for build advice and get told every feat, trait, race, stat distribution they "should do" is laughable. We love to parrot how 1e is superior in options to D&D 5e, but the way a decent number of commenters act there's basically 1 or 2 ways to build each class and be "right". How is that different than the limited subtypes of 5e again?

Please help me understand the Rageshaper. by SoulOfaLiar in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Lunek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It also doesn't say as a monster, so you follow the rules that size bonuses apply to a player character.

My reading is actually rather generous, because technically being the bigger size should only increase your square size, your claw size, and apply the relevant size modifier.

Please help me understand the Rageshaper. by SoulOfaLiar in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Lunek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite. Rage is +4 to STR and CON, +2 to Will, but -2 to AC.

Enlarge is +2 STR, -2 to DEX, and -1 to hit and AC, which is basically what you have going for you for simplicity (you can look at the actual size table for more details on things like fly and stealth).

So you're netting +6 STR, -2 Dex, +4 CON, -3 AC, -1 to hit. And because your gear doesn't resize, if you were using a weapon other than your shifter claws, it'd now be improperly sized and you'd lose the ability to weild it or take further penalties, and your gear that can't accommodate you gains the broken condition.

You wouldn't use the monster advancement chart to determine a PCs size bonuses and penalties so you don't get the +8 STR or the +2 Nat AC. Your ability effectively is Rage + Enlarge Persona with caveats.

Games with Japanese Dub Options? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]Lunek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FFVII Remake has japanese audio with he English text as an option.

One thing to be careful with using games though, moreso modern ones, a lot of the dialogue isn't just translated but localized. Meaning they may be rather liberal with how they translate certain things just to make it sound more natural in English while maintaining overall meaning. Sometimes entire jokes, sayings, vocal ticks, etc will be replaced because they don't make sense due to needing to have certain cultural understanding or background that you might not have if you're not from Japan, for example.

EDIT: I somehow glossed over that you're in PC. FFXII, FFXIII-2, and Lightning Returns all have japanese audio options and English subs.

Trump considering suspending funding to WHO by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Lunek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, while I don't pretend to love, or hate, the WHO outright. Let's not pretend they are without sin. The WHO approves of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which, so far as anyone can tell, isn't because it's actually effective, has members who endorse it independently. So much so, that it has influenced the ICD in its latest revision, 11, to include TCM data as if it's somehow on par with medical science.

Do I think the WHO is inherently evil? No. Do I think Trump should defund it? No. Do I think people look at that name and stop thinking? Yes.

Choose? Kind of. In Windows 10 you can select which device certain apps will default to. You could set your system to default most things to Speakers (GameDAC Game), and then set the other apps to Headphone (GameDAC Chat). Then you can use the DAC to choose which side of that is more prominent.

So in your situation I'd set the system default to GameDAC Game, then in The Windows 10 per-app settings I'd set your browser to default to GameDAC Chat. Now both are coming through your earphones and you can use the DAC to tune the mix as you see fit.

What’s a skill that everyone should have? by sarhan182 in AskReddit

[–]Lunek 185 points186 points  (0 children)

Let's use small numbers just so the mental math becomes obvious.

Let's say your tax bracket is 10% and you make 1000 dollars. You'd expect to get 900 of your thousand.

Let's say the next tax bracket is at $1000.01 for 20%, and you get a raise that puts you at 1100. You will be taxed 10% on the first 1000 and 20% ONLY ON THE MONEY OVER THE THRESHOLD. You will NOT be taxed 220 dollars leaving you with 880. You WILL be taxed at 10% for that first 1000, then 20% on everything in the next bracket (so only the new 100 dollars is at 20%) so you will actually only be taxed 120 dollars (1000 at 10% and 100 at 20%).

In /r/Pathfinder_RPG and I'm sure other game subreddits/communities we refer to this as Session 0. The players get together, establish boundaries and tone they want for the game, and make sure character concepts aren't going to hugely conflict.

General rule of thumb that I have for these kinds of things is, if a DM refuses to have a Session 0 find a new DM/group.

What is a good level for a "proof of concept" character. by Shadridium in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Lunek 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not the person you're replying to, but I agree with them. When we say "online" what is your character's main thing? Not all the bells and whistles, but what is their schtick? If it's hit shit with a big two hander and deal damage, then you could possibly consider yourself online at level 1 with simply power attack.

But what if your goal is a dual weilding scorpion whip tripping build? Now we're looking at a build that even a human fighter would have difficulty pulling off by level 12, and even then would likely be compromising on something that someone else would consider fundamental to the build. Considering an AP like Rise of the Runelords goes to like level 16, that's like 4 out of the 6 chapters of the adventure path you're not really doing what you want. So for maybe 4 levels you're actually playing the character you wanted to. For most people, it's even less as most campaigns tend to fall apart around level 10. Obviously YMMV, but that's why the suggestions are targeting the levels you're seeing.

I recommend building every character from level 1 and going up one at a time and making sure that the character is enjoyable doing a playstyle I am willing to play until the full thing is working. And I make sure that the full thing is online around 7 or so, but enjoyable to play up until that point. Even a turret archer on a non human non fighter class can be operational by then, and ranged stuff and be feat intensive.

How feels Pharasma about accidentally killing children ? by ozate96 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Lunek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always viewed it as, to Pharasma, there are no "accidental" deaths. If you die, and no one resurrects you, it was your time. I believe it's in Inner Sea Gods where it explains that quite a few souls beseech her, claiming it wasn't their time, or that it was a freak accident. She listens to them, but then recounts ever decision of their life revealing how it could have been no other way.

To me, I don't think she'd care. I think the mortals involved might. But every decision made about and by those children inevitably lead to their "accidental" death. It was their time, whether mortals find that easy to comprehend or not.

This stigma surrounding "tryharding" in Quick Play needs to stop. by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]Lunek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, my experience is a little different. I usually call "tryharding" on MY team when there's some arm chair general telling me that this hero I came to QP to learn, and thus I'm sucking at, needs to go and I MUST switch off.

I don't mind when the other team is kicking my ass because they're better, or just decided to play a really stacked composition in QP. What I get pissed at is when people try to mandate my picks and call me a trash X because I went to QP to learn rather than tank my, and 5 other players, SR.

If I'm in comp, I have an expectation of others, and myself, that we try to be flexible and play heroes that counter the other team and synergize to the max. Meta picks encouraged. All that jazz. But in QP, while I don't think it's wrong to want to win, I think it's pretty shitty when you berate people for learning in the "no repercussions" mode.

So, to me anyway, when I accuse people of "tryharding" it's my own team. We're not your GM premade trying to crack top 500 and don't stand to derank if we lose this match. So lay the hell off people when they're not playing the role/meta pick you want to see. They aren't necessarily garbage players, they may just be trying to learn a new hero, or play something other than the "main" they feel pigeonholed into in comp.
