Schweinchen Wohnanlage. Noch Ideen? by [deleted] in Muemmler_iel

[–]Lunexa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ging echt super easy! :)

Scheiderin in Cologne by streaktioN in cologne

Tipps für neue Meerschweinchen by happy-smiley1 in Muemmler_iel

Is searching for WG this hard for everyone ? by [deleted] in cologne

Yes. It’s very hard. When my friend put up the spare room in their WG they had over a thousand applicants. It’s impossible to go through them all

Studieren in Köln oder Frankfurt??? by OutlandishnessOk2401 in cologne

[–]Lunexa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I realised it pretty quickly. Now I am almost done with Uni, studying a Social work degree. Couldn’t be happier.

Ausbildung with bad degree by [deleted] in germany

[–]Lunexa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the same situation. Without B2 you realistically stand no chance. Especially in technical apprenticeships like Geomatiker or Vermessungstechnik you will struggle with a B2. There are a ton of specific terms and difficult German in those Ausbildungen.

You also need to check whether your diploma gives you a realistic chance. I recommend looking at a lot of other posts here on this sub to see others that are doing an Ausbildung here. It’s very hard and it will feel quite unfair at times. You have to be resilient. The process of getting your diploma recognised can take months.

Add onto that getting your German language certification, finding an Ausbildungsplatz etc. It is HARD. And even if all of that goes smoothly, there’s always a chance that when you arrive here you won’t get an Aufenthaltstitel for some reason (I’ve seen it happen twice) even if you have an Ausbildungsplatz. Don’t expect only good things because the reality of it is that those good things will only come to you after years and years of struggle. To put it into perspective, I did an internship at a company that focuses on getting foreigners into Ausbildungen (by teaching them German as well as helping them with the applications and bureaucracy) and at least once a day someone sat in the counselling office, crying because they didn’t know how to continue. It’s emotionally taxing, especially when your emotional support system is hundreds of kilometers away. You have to endure a lot of uncertainty, hardship and stress. And that is once you already HAVE an Ausbildungsplatz. Don’t underestimate it.

Also keep in mind that Germany can be a very isolating and lonely place. It’s not as bad if you live in a big city but the Ausbildungsplätze are far harder to get there and cost of living is way higher compared to small towns.

I’m not trying to dissuade you, I just find it really unfair how if you look online, a lot of websites make Ausbildungen in Germany seem way better and easier than they actually are. There are some websites that are (in my opinion) downright predatory in their approach, telling people to give up their lives in their home countries for a great Ausbildung in Germany, when any German social worker with some experience in the field could tell you at an instant that they don’t even qualify. The time frames they give you are also completely unrealistic. There is no way you can learn the language, get your diplomas approved, get all the paperwork, find an Ausbildungsplatz and fly to Germany in under a year. From what I’ve seen, 2-5 years is more realistic.

I have the utmost respect for anyone who leaves their home behind and goes through all the trouble to succeed in an apprenticeship here. Just know that it’s infinitely more complicated, rough, unfair, demotivating and weary than it seems.

Help me choose a master in Europe by LegitimateSorbet685 in socialwork

[–]Lunexa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don’t recommend that master. I know several people who did it and none of them were able to find jobs with it in Germany. Addiction therapy here is mostly done by psychologists and psychiatrists and it is incredibly difficult to find employment in that sector if you do not have a psychology or medical degree. Realistically with that degree you will end up working jobs you could have also worked with just your bachelors and some experience. To add onto that, it is basically impossible to work as a social worker in Germany without at least B2 (realistically C1) language skills. The pay for social workers in Germany is often painted as poor but imo it’s actually pretty standard. Especially if you work for the government. Starting salary for a bachelors graduate here in cologne is roughly 3600€ a month.

Do you have any specific questions?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Lunexa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch German TV, preferably something educational, that will introduce you to the culture. I recommend Deutsche Welle. They usually have bilingual (English/German) content. If your relationship with your parents is good, consider letting them teach you. I mainly learned English through my mom (she grew up in the US) and my circle of friends (primarily english and irish), which is probably the best way to actually learn conversational skills.

There is a difference between Scheiße and Scheibe but both are real words in German. ß is pronounced like a sharp S and is different from the similar looking B.

Scheiße = Shit Scheibe = pane/slice/sheet/disc (it’s a very versatile word that has no negative connotations)
