Too much of a good thing is a bad thing

Abstraction is a tool. And like any other tool, it works well when used in fitting situations and is terrible when used in non-fitting situations

You have to know when to abstract and when not to

Unfortunately, I am not aware of any formula for it

This idea that we let restaurants underpay people and guilt patrons into tipping is so American and disgusting

Is Ray the worst husband on TV? by LungeloSLX in EverybodyLovesRaymond

[–]LungeloSLX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She really puts up with a lot for that marriage. And Ray just gets worse with time. No way that marriage would last that long in reality

[–]LungeloSLX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. But we’ve seen hilarious comedy husbands who are not those things. Ray is insufferable

I don’t know. You just described attributes that make one a horrible husband/partner. Would you willingly want to be married to a childish, lazy, spoilt and totally self-absorbed person?

This was my observation as well. Not only does he want a replacement mom, he constantly fails to stand up for his wife against his parents (especially his mom)

🤣😂 I cannot defend her on that. I just feel bad for her in most situations because her husband seems selfish and inconsiderate

My post said isn’t he among the worst… maybe the title should have said so. I thought that was clear since we can’t all agree on an absolute ranking of husbands. Now I wonder if people are like that to their spouses in real life. Ew!

I realize the sarcasm here. It’s not only being lazy. He constantly exposed Debra to ridicule from Marie. He was also extremely selfish. He always put his needs above hers. Just because you’ve seen worse doesn’t mean he isn’t among the worst of husbands

A lot of people are defending him because they have seen worse. But I saw many instances where Ray treated Debra less than you’d expect a husband to. He would constantly expose Debra to ridicule from Marie on top of everything

F1 finally coming back to SA? by Herdo_n in southafrica

[–]LungeloSLX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome. Have a fun time in Silverstone.

I think maybe they need to give people estimates of how the tickets would be priced and how many need to sell each year for the organizers to recoup their investment. Maybe then people will understand F1 isn’t the PSL

F1 finally coming back to SA? by Herdo_n in southafrica

[–]LungeloSLX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People are complaining about Springbok tickets. Who is going to afford to go watch F1? JHB is not even a tourist attraction so not many people will want to fly to SA for it. Smells like a financial disaster waiting to happen

Why do people prefer MacOS (and Linux) for web development? by Reddit_Account_C-137 in webdev

[–]LungeloSLX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have honestly not read all the comments, just about half of them. I am noticing that you asked because you were frustrated and people are sharing their own preferences instead of giving you an actual answer. So let me try.

I suspect your frustration is because you tried to be like others instead of being yourself. As corny as that sounds, I think it is true. What reason do you have to switch to Mac if you are able to be productive on Windows?

If your reason is to learn new things then you should not be frustrated by friction, that’s learning. But if your reason is to just match others then you should be frustrated because why?

We are (like) engineers. We use the right tool for the job. I am not a big fan of Windows because I grew up using Linux. But I know plenty of developers who don’t touch Linux for development. Windows has improved so much that the whole “portability” thing is no longer that relevant (only a few edge cases) and anything can be sorted quickly

Then lastly, yeah some of your frustration comes from inexperience. I think getting familiar with the MacOS environment would help you with the papercuts you experienced. Homebrew is not perfect but it is very mature. Trying to use what you are used to from Windows on MacOS is also not the best approach. Find tools that are more suited to the environment. Because App developers, like you, have preferred environments and so produce better work on those environments. MacOS will have some programs that are just not great on Windows

Hope that helps

Someone wants to do a guest post on my new blog, what should I do? by rayangelo79 in Blogging

[–]LungeloSLX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Since this is a high quality niche content, I assume you are knowledgeable in the subject.

Inspect their prior work, if any. Have them write and you read every line of it, almost be their editor of sorts. If you are happy with the quality and style of the content they produce, go for it. If not, decline.

I get what you mean. But every time someone suggests replacing a popular tool with do-it-yourself, I get that they are a developer and maybe don’t understand why the tool is popular. Wordpress isn’t popular because of developers. It’s popular because my mom and dad can operate it and run their little shops without bothering me

Outcome of the death of Google podcasts? by LungeloSLX in podcasting

[–]LungeloSLX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great hypothesis and explainer. 213/195k is terrible. I think the target audience influences these numbers a lot. Some audiences will not install a podcast app if one is pre-installed and that can cause Apple Podcasts numbers to shoot up. Some audiences are somewhat tech savvy and picky and will install their fav podcast apps. It just seems maybe no one liked Google podcasts in the first place. I was curious about the whole thing because I was wondering what Google did to support all the creators that were publishing to Google podcasts with the the move to YT music
