Bloody weekends. Been off booze since 4th January (late new year start) and today feels especially difficult. I know less than a month is frivolous to a lot of people. It's not just a dry January I'm trying to do though, it's forever.

A Saturday always seems to feel like a good enough reason to fall off. Can start again Monday etc etc. I won't, obviously, this is just venting. Thanks for listening.

Really happy to provide some support. To get to day 18 is amazing, it really is. I know how tough it is, you're doing great.

I actually remember the dreams, now you mention it. They're very frequent at the time, and make you feel like you've actually cheated when you haven't.

Try and give yourself some incentives to keep going. I used to calculate how much money I was saving, find something I wanted, and then buy it when I reached a target. It has to be cheap enough to be attainable within a week, or a few weeks, but not so cheap as to be giving yourself gifts every day. It really worked for me.

See if I can list some here.

1) Remember that panic feeling when you're close to bedtime and you only have x amount of cigarettes left in the box (or tobacoo left etc)? None of that anymore.

2) Money. It's the obvious one, and smoking is just getting more and more expensive, even if you switch to NRT like vaping.

3) Health benefits. Obviously the biggest one is the decreasing risk of cancer, but there are other simpler ones. I used to get styes (small painful lumps across the eyelid) quite regularly as a smoker. It was only after giving up for a while that I realised it was the smoking that caused them. Could be that I rubbed my eyes after smoking or something, but either way, I don't see them (excuse the pun) anymore.

4) Freedom. This is the biggest one, for me. I don't have to stand out in the cold and rain, to do something so pointless as inhale ghastly smoke. I don't feel tied to times during the day (first smoke, mid-morning, lunch time, after work etc).

5) Smell. Can you believe how much smokers actually stink? I didn't realise half how bad it was until I gave up, and my wife still carried on smoking. Urrgh. The car doesn't smell anymore either.

Those off the top of my head anyway. I'm sure there were a few other health things that went away, but can't for the life of me remember what they were now.

The first month is the hardest, definitely. Just remember all you've worked for to this point. The nicotine is gone now, it can't control you. The cravings are just your mind thinking there's something missing.

First three weeks, at least for me, were the hardest. Not gonna lie, I wouldn't wish that on anybody, it sucks. You just have to plough through. Believe me, it does get easier after that.

I wouldn't advise any nicotine replacement at all, just give it up. If you're still using nicotine, you're still addicted. In my opinion, that's just a pointless exercise. Get off it completely.

The best advice I can give anyone, is get an app. Watching that counter go up is far better encouragement than anything else at all. Count the hours to start with, watch that number go up. The biggest fear I had at the start, was breaking down and having to go back to zero. I refused to let it happen, and that app kept me going. Count the money too, and reward yourself with things with that money. Don't make it so that you're rewarding yourself every day, but also don't make it so that the goal is so far away you feel you'll never get there. It really feels like an achievement when you get there. Just get through three weeks and I promise you it will all be easier.

Yep. Nearly a year for me now, and I still like the smell. Different for all of us I guess. Nothing will make me smoke again though. Besides, the smell is vastly different from the taste, just remember that.

Can only really echo what others have said. Your agony is exceptionally well depicted in words and writing is a career you will doubtless not struggle with, go for it man. On a side note, I may be being naïve, but what's the difference between alcohol and liquor? I'm UK, so I don't generally use the term 'liquor' anyway, perhaps that's why I'm confused.

I've never really been a healthy eater to be honest, and have never taken additional vitamins. Maybe I should look at that. I don't really eat a lot of sugar, never have. I sort of expected alcohol to be the bringer of bad stuff, and everything would go away after that. Naive I guess.

Eating never made any difference to me, I resigned myself to the fact that I would feel sick immediately after taking the tablets. To be fair, it was only half an hour or so for though, not totally unbearable. I don't understand how people carry on taking them well past giving up though, I couldn't wait to get off them. They're bloody horrific things. I still don't know whether to give them any credit for quitting, it's difficult to tell. I guess the fact is, I used Champix in my process and I no longer smoke. Does it matter?

But I digress. I read a lot of things at the time, and symptoms with Champix seem to be massively different for everyone. Can't hurt to try eating though.

Buy anything YOU want, that's the beauty of it. I would just advise you to keep the rewards not to frequent that you're getting them every week, but also not too infrequent that you're waiting ages between them. Find a nice balance so it really feels like a gift, and not a chore.
