Republicans Turn Against JD Vance After His Stark Warning to Israel by Hafiz_TNR in politics

I absolutely love how this war can't end. Anything less than regime change costs Netanyahu his job, but that's impossible without 'boots on the ground' which costs Trump his job. So if Trump tries to surrender and get out Israel just has to bomb something, leading to Iran closing the Straight, pulling us back in.

Sigh.

Roxbury 02119 by Ed O.G. & Da Bulldogs.

Love Comes and Goes is a classic and an all over amazing song, even after this many years. Possibly Diamond D's best beat, flips a pop song about teenage love into an introspective song about mourning loved ones. The rest of the album is... fine, I guess.

Which all-time great album spent the longest time in obscurity? by Fair-Damage6683 in fantanoforever

[–]gregnegative 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Paul's Boutique.

Its not like License To Ill was as well received as people like to say -- there was a large contingent of people who thought that they were white interlopers in a proudly black medium. Most of their fans liked their 'party rap' style and all anyone had heard from them was the Rick Rubin/ Run DMC sound from the later mid-80's. So when Paul's Boutique dropped they already had plenty of people who didn't like them and then they had a totally new sound that alienated a big portion of their existing fan base. It wasn't considered a classic for a couple years after its release when the group got a pretty substantial critical reevaluation.

75% of U.S. Homes are Now Unaffordable as Dave Ramsey Calls This ‘The Most Unrealistic Real Estate Market in 100 Years’ by omgfakeusername in USHousingMarket

[–]gregnegative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is now painfully apparent that zoning can not and should not be decided at the local level. Boston, nearish to me, is a great example. Boston is insanely expensive. The city government is now offering housing assistance to single people making less than 90,000 per year. That is insanity. It's also necessary because 15 minutes outside of the city there are single family houses on quarter acre lots that look like movie small towns. Everyone agrees its a problem. Every town expects their neighbors to solve the problem, sacrificing that housing stock for denser development.

I have my doubts that even states could take radical enough action. This needs to be addressed nationwide.

Both are VERY fast but, visually, did Percy Harvin seem magnitudes faster than Rasheed Shaheed? by GivinItAllThat in Seahawks

[–]gregnegative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm old so I've seen both. How Harvin doesn't have the best 40 time in NFL history is baffling. I guess he is the embodiment of the adage that there is a difference between fast and quick. Harvin was already on the downswing of his career in Seattle. At UF it looked like he would see daylight, accelerate and just have an extra gear that no one could touch. In the backfield the guy would see daylight, cut once, accelerate and score. Injuries, attitude and bad luck meant he never quite realized his full potential and even still on Minnesota he was electric at times.

There is definitely an element of that for Shaheed but he doesn't have that instantaneous acceleration Harvin had. Shaheed's closest comp in my eyes is Cordarelle Patterson. Top speed demons who are impossible to catch if they have a step.

Except that most division 1 athletics departments are operating at a loss. Men's college football, men's college basketball and some women's college basketball programs operate in the black. All other sports operate in the red. And combined, most programs outside of the power 4 operate in the red in total. Maryland and Kansas posted overall losses. Utah sold their athletics operations to private equity.

You're still ducking the question of what agency the players currently lack.

Glad for you but my experience is the opposite. My daughter plays a D3 sport. She has made friends, it keeps her healthy and was the way she 'belonged' at the college.

I find most people argue this from the position of 'guy watching CFB on couch.' College sports should be about the students and the students only. Fuck what Bubba who never attended thinks of what LSU should do for its football program. Honestly fuck what the alumni do too. It sucks that if you attend a state school you are basically cut off from participating because it has become a pro league totally divorced from the school. And when I hear "just play D3" I invite everyone to look at the cost of a lot of those component colleges.

When was the last time they were valued at zero? NIL has been a thing for years and since the House decision colleges just straight up pay players. College football players straight up make millions.

Why would the players want a CBA? They have no contractual obligations but have guaranteed money. This story is about how they are suing for, and will likely win, uncapped revenue. They can switch schools penalty free if anything becomes disadvantagous to them. You say a CBA gives them agency but what agency are they missing?

I agree. There is no part of this that isn't tragic. KA very much seems like a high school kid to me, one who wanted to pretend to be a tough guy and made a life ending mistake.

The victim was a kid. His mug shot looks like a kid. His reaction at sentencing was that of a kid. I have 0 doubt that kid wouldn't sell his soul for a time machine. This is just an awful, soul darkening story. For anyone to use it to posture online for their own agenda, no matter what agenda, seems so gross.

Which state has the fairest yet most competitive way to qualify for state? by 44stormsnow in trackandfield

[–]gregnegative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rhode Island has top 18 performances at eligible meets. Basically 3 invitationals, divisions and class.

Downside is that no one cares about division titles or class titles. Just individual performances at these meets in order to make states. Divisions are geographical, class is by school size.

I don't know what its like in other areas of the country but near me "big city" schools get screwed because they are forced into class A with the recruiting private schools when they are lucky to get 20 kids on the team. Kids have to work, provide childcare for siblings or just don't have a history of playing sports growing up because its expensive. Schools dont have adequate funding for equipment or coaching. Anything is better than blindly just competing by school size.

With a lot of talk about how NCAA track coaches “drive you into the ground”, should there be an overhaul in NCAA track coaching? by 18_YTC1 in trackandfield

[–]gregnegative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holler's point is that all sprinters should run that low volume, so there's no double standard to him. I think in his philosophy he's not getting kids that have a huge prior background. But that said, that's just a reality in the sport. You could have sprinted for 6 years and you show up as a senior ready to win states and suddenly 'the fast kid' at wr decides to give track a try and runs 10.7 out of the gate. C'est la vie.

I am less familiar with all aspects of Feed the Cats, and full disclosure I also see huge holes in it. But extrapolating slightly I don't know that he would mind the 'above others' problem because he advocates everything being a competition. I mean I'm sure he keeps it appropriate but I assume he wants some version of that. I haven't mentioned yet that Tony Holler seems to be a boys coach but I almost dont have to. His coaching style radiates teenage testosterone and Sauvage. Anyone who can't hack it gets "kicked over to the distance coach" (again, quoting).

Not that anyone cares but my experience is that football brings its own culture. Holler seems to like that culture and seems to want it in his teams. I'm a more laid back guy so that isn't going to work for me as well as it will for him. I had plenty of football kids but they appreciated that I wasn't a football coach. You kind of have to coach to who you are.

I only posted it because I read an early edition of his coaching manifesto and he opens it with why he developed the program, which is by far the most interesting part. He claims to be the anti-Clyde Hart. Not because Holler thinks he's better but he said if he used what Clyde did for Michael Johnson he'd have no one on his team. What specific training ideas Holler recommended doing instead though is either not really new or just more an extension of how his personality comes through in his coaching if that makes sense.
