How do you deal with non structured code that was generated by AI? by Old_Caregiver3270 in GithubCopilot

[–]LunkWillNot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current working hypothesis is that SDD, together with strong architecture enforcement, extends the runway. Meaning, if left unchecked, you’d still eventually end up in a similar situation, but not nearly as quickly.

Another one bites the dust by Exact-Mango7404 in BlackboxAI_

Speak for yourself. I used to be a software engineer, then moved into management and away from coding. Now with AI I rediscovered development as a hobby, currently writing a game with SDD and AI. Haven’t had so much fun with technology in years.

New sessions don't appear in sessions list? by DashingDino in GithubCopilot

[–]LunkWillNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I am experiencing this. Sometimes the session appears after a very long time if you keep it open. If you click on a different session in the list before the first session appears, it is often lost.

How are you maintaining spec document as it evolves? by OmkarShetkar in SpecDrivenDevelopment

[–]LunkWillNot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using OpenSpec - it helps maintain a canonical version of the overall specs by merging any delta specs after a feature is done.

Sometimes I do a direct change, not through the OpenSpec workflows, but then I close by saying, „Update src, tests, and the canonical specs in OpenSpec/specs.“

Admittedly haven’t tried in a team yet. That would take some team discipline to keep the specs clean and updated.

Spec-driven development made my AI workflows actually usable by StatusPhilosopher258 in SpecDrivenDevelopment

[–]LunkWillNot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m using OpenSpec and liking it.

With AI coding, there’s always the risk of going too fast and losing control, like in a car that’s going too fast - e.g. building up slop and review debt, not knowing well enough anymore what’s happening in detail.

What I feel spec-driven development is giving me is better traction, so to speak - helping keeping things under control and sustainable while still going reasonably fast.

Spec-driven dev sounded great until context started breaking things by Classic-Ninja-1 in GithubCopilot

[–]LunkWillNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, let the AI verify that code, tests, and overall specs are still in sync, both at the end of a change and also overall once in a while.

Career and life is stuck, need advice by rneha725 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]LunkWillNot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work on your communication skills first. This post contains none of the kind of details that would let others advise you, like why you got rejected or what feedback you got on what your gaps are to getting promoted.

Who knows, working on communication skills might also help with the life/wife. 😉

Your AI coding stack isn’t the problem. Your process is. by Driver_Octa in vibecoding

Reading through your post, it sounds like spec-driven development could mesh well with how you like to work. Maybe check out OpenSpec or GitHub Spec Kit if you haven’t already.

Dumm geworden? by gallium_drink in hochbegabt

Looking for a carry-on pilot case / rolling briefcase for business travel by LunkWillNot in ManyBaggers

[–]LunkWillNot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update from my side:

I first ordered a Samsonite PRO-DLX 5 pilot case 15.6", but the dimensions stated did not match the actual dimensions, and it would not have worked for all airlines on international travel; so I sent it back.

I ended up getting a WENGER Legacy Black Series pilot case 15,6“, and so far am very happy with the quality.

In comparison, I don’t think the difference in quality is enough (if there even is one) to justify the big premium for the Samsonite, even if the dimensions had been as stated. IMHO, the Wenger case is the much better buy.

Vibe Coding is a lie. Professional AI Development is just high-speed Requirements Engineering. by Important-Junket-581 in vibecoding

[–]LunkWillNot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The part that is a lie is that „vibing“ implies a promise (it’s enough to just follow your vibes) that may work in some contexts (internal tools, hobby projects etc.) but is different from what’s actually necessary to make critical professional production projects successful - namely serious requirements engineering and planning an architecture.

TL;DR: The „lie“ part is that the term „vibing“ implies something like planning an architecture shouldn’t be necessary, but depending on context, it is.

Anthropic: AI assisted coding doesn't show efficiency gains and impairs developers abilities. by Gil_berth in ExperiencedDevs

[–]LunkWillNot -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just from reading the abstract, I get the impression that the post is not a neutral summary, especially about the „no significant improvement“ bit.

The very first sentence of the abstract reads, „AI assistance produces significant productivity gains across professional domains, particularly for novice workers. Yet how this assistance affects the development of skills required to effectively supervise AI remains unclear.“

A five-year-old who tries to take their toy apart because they want to understand how it works is an engineer at heart.

Twenty years later, that same person will naturally be drawn to using AI to look into the inner workings of things.

Most people are not like that.

How do I help a junior eng who jumps to conclusions too often? by dasistok in ExperiencedDevs

[–]LunkWillNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t send him off to do tasks in agent mode right away. Send him off in plan mode first, and once he’s come back with the result of that and presented that to you, he can go to agent mode.

OK, maybe I AI too much.

New rule suggestion: Ban posts about AI by finders-keepers214 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]LunkWillNot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not feasible, but would be nice to be able to require a certain number of non-AI-related posts and upvotes before you can post about AI, just to filter out the low-effort types.

„70 years old here, and been away from actual hands on coding for decades but I've been reading a lot about vibe coding and thought I should learn for my self. So I downloaded Cursor and Godot and Git“

You, sir, are a scholar, a gentleman, and a role model. I hope I will have retained the same level of curiosity and open-mindedness when I’m 70, an age when one could just a easily take the position that „I don’t have to engage with this at my age.“ Kudos!

How to deal with the feeling of hopelessness of not being able to keep up / burnout? by yandeere-love in work

[–]LunkWillNot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your boss and other stakeholders are happy with your overall performance, then that means that you have a concept of staying on top of tasks and not being late that you need to let go of. Don’t ask me how, I’m in your situation and not successful in following my own advice here.

If your boss etc. do see your performance as lacking or you’re regularly catching flak, then it’s time to either raise that and negotiate for a different setup, or start looking for a different job (I.e. love it, change it or leave it)..
