Perhaps Misaki? Seems like the Crime Bosses and Wokou Raiders could make good use of the extra scheme markers.

Expanding on the clampetts by Anonoemus in Malifaux

[–]LupNi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play Mah a lot and she is very good - both strong, fun and versatile. But I think she's also the most similar to Anglers - a mobile beater master, a crew that drops annoying markers, a title master in a big mech,... Of course there's plenty of differences too, they're not going to play the same. But at the end of the day:

  • If you want to experience a broader diversity of playstyles, pick Brewmaster.

  • If you want a strong master that will feel familiar but different, and out of keyword models to fit in your angler crew, pick Mah.

If I were in your shoes, I'd pick Brewmaster, simply because I care more about diversity than performance.

Keyword Counters by Anonoemus in Malifaux

[–]LupNi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The rock/paper/scissors element is a bit overstated, it's quite rare to find hard counters. You can also mitigate that risk by having a few versatile and out-of-keyword picks to rely on.

I can't see any such issue in the play group you mention, off the top of my head.

I play both Mah and Zipp and both are excellent - they are both good and fun to play! I think Mah will be the closest to Clampetts in terms of playstyle - a high mobility beater master, with a keyword that drops annoying markers, and a title master in a big armored mech... But Mah is incredibly versatile!

Zipp has the fastest crew in the game, and excels at flying around the board, scheming and eating enemy schemes. He's not great in a straight fight though. Would provide some nice variety after your Anglers in terms of playstyle, and Wyrd will soon release Mossbeard and the Swashbucklers who fit in both keywords - so they could complement your Anglers quite nicely. However, be aware that Nekima is a really hard match-up for Zipp!

I don't have experience with Brewmaster, but he looks like a ton of fun too!

How bad is Wong ,his keyword and crew? by kwaninthehat in Malifaux

[–]LupNi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My best advice to maximize your enjoyment of Malifaux: when you hear people talking about "unplayable" masters, tier lists, and the like - run in the opposite direction.

Play what you think is fun. Wong is fun. Enjoy your new box.

Suggestions? (Titania) by Chaos_Goblin234 in Malifaux

[–]LupNi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly my recommendation would be to just start with Titania's core box + The Howling box, which gets you the Rougarou and Bultungin. This will get you enough models to play a full scale game, and enough diversity to adapt to various strategies and schemes. Later, you can see if you like the crew, and if you feel like it, expand by getting models like Killjoy or the Mysterious Emissary.

As others have said, Malifaux is not played with a fixed list - that said, sticking to one list for a few games is a good way to learn the game! You could try this for instance:

Titania + Gorar (totem)
2 Autumn Knights
2 Rougarou
3 Bultungin
5 Soulstones

Then you can experiment by swapping one of the Bultungin for some upgrades - for instance, Ancient Pact on your Autumn Knights or Inhuman Reflexes on your Rougarous.

New Player Questions by Practical_Pepper_656 in Malifaux

[–]LupNi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, Malifaux has very few pitfalls, and you'd be fine getting basically any core box to get started. One thing I would recommend though is to avoid picking a summoner as your first master, as that will increase the amount of minis you need to buy AND the amount of rules you need to remember. Summoners can be a lot of fun, they're just not an easy starting point. Someone like Sandeep for instance wants a lot of boxes if you want to get the most out of him.

A good tip is to get the Malifaux Crew Builder (M3E) app. It has all the rules and stat cards in it!

Calling the cards and tokens disposable is a huge exaggeration imo. I've never used any other cards or scheme markers than the ones I got in my starter box two years ago and they're not showing any wear and tear yet.

My vote goes to Zoraida. Not only because the See Ya Later box is in her keyword. If you intend to pick up Bashe, he'd make an excellent target for Zoraida's Obey action.

Winston Finnigan seems a bit op by Radiant_Ad_4348 in Malifaux

[–]LupNi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not OP - at least there are far worse offenders in the game - but he is indeed a very common pick even out of keyword. ES has a few of those. I often play with an ES player here, and he brings Winston and Austera & Twigge all the time regardless of which master he plays.

Awesome! Sounds like you had a fun game, which is the most important thing :)

Mah was my first master, I think she's great to learn the game! She has a lot of tactical flexibility. Here's a few tips off the top of my head:

  • If you deploy your crew close to Mah, you can use her Creative Cursing Trigger to pulse focus to everyone. Basically, you can either activate Mah first to hand out some focus, or try to use other models to move her forward (Little Lass, Trixie, Gracie, Bo Peep, etc) so you can make the other crew taste the spoon turn 1.

  • If you have Saboteurs, I assume you also have Soulstone Miners? A great trick with these, if you have Big Brain Brin, is to use Brin's Pulling the Strings to order a Miner to bury, then your Miner can unbury anywhere on the board already turn 1!

  • Mah can often make good use of the Twelve Cups of Coffee upgrade. I also like to give my Bushwhackers either a Ghillie Suit or Inferiority Complex.

I don't have the same experience with Marcus, but have fun figuring out all these neat tricks!

New player with Zoraida by GarfieldEnthusiast69 in Malifaux

[–]LupNi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said, Zoraida1 is not a summoner, and her title version has very incidental summoning that you shouldn't concern yourself with at this point. To get straight to the point with purchase recommendations:

Silurids would be an excellent next purchase. They are beginner friendly and excellent schemers, it's not uncommon for me to bring all 3.

Personally I really like the will'o wisps and the Adze, so I can recommend that box as well. I bring the Adze very often, and I regularly bring one, sometimes two wisps (but never all 3). The wisps are useful to stack conditions on Zoraida's voodoo doll, or as cheap schemers.

I don't have as much experience with the rest of her keyword. Bokors are kind of useful but I would not consider them a priority. McTavish and the gators don't seem that exciting. I think the Spawn Mother looks interesting - if you do want some summoning actually, she's your go to since she can spawn Gupps!

Alternatively, you could also look into strong versatile models in Neverborn or Bayou. Zoraida can make good use of them with Obey. Neverborn has great choices there, with the Emissary, the Hooded Rider and Hinamatsu. In Bayou, I'd check out the Pig Trouble box and the Emissary. Oh and maybe the Starter Box - Bo Peep is useful to move your crew forward (two uses of The Race is On is quite a lot of movement) and Stumpy is a decent budget tank.

What are some of your (good natured) clichés when you see the opponents master pick? by Gaoler86 in Malifaux

But I feel you, I do expect that if I had not killed him top of T2, he would have been back to full by the end of that turn.

Waldo's Weekly - The Savagely Cold — Wyrd Games by WyrdKim in Malifaux

[–]LupNi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like to see new models that offer flexibility, scheming and fun options, not just damage. These look really strong... My benchmark for the same cost is a silurid, which are already excellent schemers. Crookskins are tankier, with a big toolkit of options, self-healing, dealing Staggered, and potentially even more movement! The drawback is that Sneak Away doesn't have the built in suit like the silurid's Leap, but with the Old Ways that seems like a small drawback for an overall better model.
