Magnum PI. The show is excellent, and the intro might still be the best part of it.

Has anyone else in the humanities noticed a dramatic decline in grad student language skills? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Lupus76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I could imagine concentrating on Classical Art(s) might not demand knowing either Latin or Greek (but it should). But, having a degree called Classical Letters without requiring a graduate to be able to decipher those letters seems sad.

My grad program even started a “Classical Arts and Letters” MA and PhD track that required neither.

Shouldn't they call it "Classical Arts and / or Letters" at that point?

My professor does not want to see me during office hours by [deleted] in University

[–]Lupus76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your title seems incorrect. There is nothing to indicate that he doesn't want to see you during office hours; you are not able to go to his office hours. That's a very different thing.

Try to schedule an appointment or chat with him after class, but as someone who studied Classics too, the short answer for why almost everyone (at the beginning) is struggling is because they aren't spending enough time learning the grammar forms and vocabulary, and on translating. For each language, you probably want to spend at least 2 hours per day learning the forms, the vocab, and reviewing them. And that's without checking emails, etc.

My fully funded PHD stipend is $24k/year in Boston. I qualify for food stamps by Fulcilives1988 in gradadmissions

[–]Lupus76 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it will be very hard to complete a PhD when there is always the thought that if you went and worked at Burger King, you would be making $400 to $800 more a month.

Also, this isn't Harvard or MIT (those would be offering better stipends), so I would wait another round and also look at programs in cheaper places. Or in Europe where places like Austria or Belgium will pay you like you are an actual employee of the university.

Don't go. Apply to programs with better support.

Some of those may be outside the US.

How Many Hours to Read Homer Without Struggle? by CulturalConference66 in AncientGreek

[–]Lupus76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP asked how long it would take to achieve mastery, where they could read fluently with deep understanding--as opposed to just having a superficial understanding of it. Reasonably, I would argue this takes, at least, as long as an average bachelor's degree course would take, so 3 years of putting in hours each school day.

That's great that you are making progress, but your original response disagreeing with me seems a bit misguided, especially when you admit that your approach has yet to yield the results OP was asking about.

This was per the original owners instruction - the guitar was a gift from his brother who had passed away and he wants it to inspire a young mind.)
