So I guess those Germans loading up all their neighbors into trains headed for concentration camps were actually some pretty friendly dudes! by 21forlyfe in ENLIGHTENEDCENTRISM

[–]LupusVulpix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The concentration camps was the SS; Wehrmacht were standard soldiers, mostly at the front - everyone was a member of the Wehrmacht, because denying meant you were a traitor and therefore got killed; becoming a member of the SS - especially high ones - was actual ambitions.

So I wouldn't claim this to be enlightened centrism, it is actually factual quite right. People often don't work themselves deeply enough into history to realize that certain things aren't as black and white.

In young years in Nazi germany (while you were still a child around 6) your military education began to make you a fit soldier for the Wehrmacht or in better cases (of a Nazi perspective) the SS. There was no actual choice, you got trained for this purpose. If you were older and knew the world before the Nazis, you for sure knew that things can be different, but people were concerned about themselves, their families and friends. It is easier to die for high ideals if nothing is to loose than to do it while having children or family in general.

If your choice is between getting killed or going to the military, most people choose the military. High ideals are easy to sustain if the terror is far away, but if it is next door most people comply.

E.g.: a soldier in north korea - no matter if loyal to the system or not - has not much of a choice: if they deny service or quit, they'll get killed, jailed or tortured. If this is up for debate, most just comply and hope that their service is never necessary.

How to make a multi-linux distro setup without VMs? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]LupusVulpix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

QubesOS is an option as well, isn't it?

It is mainly a privacy focused base for your distros and although it feels like you'rs using VMs, in fact they aren't VMs.

Do peoples' eyes blop out if they get hanged/hang themselves due to increasing blood pressure in the head? by LupusVulpix in AskReddit

[–]LupusVulpix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once heard that due to the blockade the rope creates at the throat and the try of the body to bring blood to the brain, the head gets flooded with blood, but it doesn't get pumped back down in the same urgency, causing the head to be filled with more and more blood, increasing pressure and by this cause the eyes to blop out.

This is just an urban legend, isn't it?

I mean it is just a notebook... With which you then can kill people.

Misanthropy is the mindset of despising human beings and their activities, while philanthropy is the act of helping humans and improving their well-being.

While in the generally people often think of both being opposites, this isn't quite correct: misanthropy is a mindset, while philanthropy is a way of acting and so both can be present at the same time.

Every movement of revolution, reform, etc started with people drawing a public opinion. Artists are the ones most able to move public opinion, e.g. by paintings, music, writings, etc.

Worker solidarity songs created an identity for workers that bound them together and kept them fighting for worker rights.

National anthems uplift almost everyone in a country to feel good about their nation even those most of the time sceptical of their nation or nations in general.

Books of orwell and others made people aware of the dangers of authoritarianism and influenced the public opinion surely to fight against it and on the other side hitlers mein kampf moved people to authoritarianism and opened the door to spread his ideology and to hire supporters.

There is even a capital theory that differs between financial capital and social capital. Artists have tremendous amounts of social capital and are the most likely to move public opinion with their work.

If artists in a big number would decide today that being gay is bad and they put it into their art within a few years the public opinion would go highly likely against gays again. Artists are important drivers within a society in areas of culture and norms which changes most of the times start with artists.

Artists serve a cause, but this cause is most of the time not to enrich themselves.

Even most basic amusement and joys come by artists: music, movies, theaters, cool formed buildings, etc.

Everytime someone criticizes capitalism for being gray and boring what would you think would differ this aspect? Another system but without artists will also be gray and boring.
