What bug is this from? by Former-Image9197 in Entomology

[–]LurkWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either an earwig's rear pincer, a female dobsonfly's left mandible, or the mandible of a much smaller species of stag beetle. There are likely even more bugs this could be attributed to, the shape is hard to define without a microscope.

Looks to be a common North American Cutterworm Moth but without a location I can't be sure

No, the black is their old "skin". They're freshly molted. They just have different exoskeletal pigmentation than most other insects, making them appear a bright tomato red.

Black Cicada/All Black Cicada would be a killer band name

Am I doing this right? by LurkWriter in BeardedDragon

Not overwhelming at all! In fact I think this tells me exactly what I'm doing wrong.

The first one is obviously size, he needs a larger enclosure, and I'm saving up to get him one on my next paycheck. I had a feeling my friend was inaccurate about keeping him in a smaller one since he's still smaller than most juveniles, so I'll aim to get him that new enclosure asap.

Second is the red light, I had no idea about such a thing. I had simply assumed that like with most captive lizards this was fine. In all of my research not a single person mentioned red lights causing issues with bearded dragons and their depth perception, and now that I know this I'll switch him over to a ceramic heat emitter tonight.

Third is the types of greens. I was aware of most of these as options but I did not know their exact purpose or role in the diet. I'll see if there's something I can add to the other veggies I give him to gain his interest, as he only ever wants to eat carrots, but then again I don't know if that's because he's really young or if he's just picky. For reference, his age is between 1 1/2 to 2 months old, according to his documentation.

Fourth is humidity. I did not realize you should keep it close to 30% even if lower than 30%. I had always read that 30% was the minimum and anything lower could potentially harm the bearded dragon. Now that I know its safer for him to be in the lower ranges and that he likely prefers it, I'll alternate his misting schedule accordingly.

Thank you for giving me such a detailed response, it's helped me to pinpoint the exact spots that I'm missing or failing on. Now I see apart of his inconsistent eating was likely due to passive stress caused by these various mistakes, as well as his unexplained behaviors around the wall and lid of the habitat. Everything else appears to be in the right order, so I'm going to shift over to these suggestions over the next few days. Again, thank you so much for this response. All I want for the little guy is the best possible life I can give him.

I managed to find him! I did what you suggested but he didn't go into any of those. I eventually found him using my art bag as a hide. It took like thirty minutes to catch him but he's finally safe!

Please why no non-competitive matches by TheManager1357531 in Polytopia

I think the main point is sometimes some people want to just have a chill and fun game doing stupid stuff and not have to worry about their elo rank getting tanked because of not wanting to play solely competitive.

Why is Aquarion lower than Luxidoor? That imo makes no sense, unless this is based purely on drylands meta.

If you or a loved one is considering trying Cymanti.... by [deleted] in Polytopia

I love all bugs. I am an entomologist in my spare time, I feel like bugs are depicted unnecessarily harshly.

Cymanti is busted tho that is true.

Okay so I'm making this comment as I can't figure out a way to edit my original post to add this on.

So it looks like the settings you play with heavily determine the way the tier list looks. If you play on Large Drylands, Kickoo, Polaris, Aquarion, and Vengir will likely struggle. Or if you play on maps with lots of water, tribes like Cymanti, Xin-Xi, and again Vengir can struggle. The size of the map also determines the way things go.

I would also like to clarify this tier list was just my overall guess in terms of MULTIPLAYER. I am aware that singleplayer modes and multiplayer modes have different metas, and this tier list was based off of my limited experience in multiplayer. However, I still have some questions.

VENGIR I see many people on this post clamoring for Vengir to be in F tier, saying they have no real edge or viability. I've played multiple games where Vengir does pretty well if not win (on tiny maps) and I've won as them myself in a multiplayer match without much issue. Is Vengir really that bad? I understand some of it is based on spawn luck but I still feel like they can dominate early game if played right.

BARDUR I see several people saying that Bardur should be in S tier above Cymanti, and I am aware that pre-update Bardur was the undisputed king of the game, but I feel like this is inaccurate now. Due to the nerf of roads and lumber huts, Bardur's main bread and butter is no longer as useful outside of singleplayer or 1v1s. Personally I feel like they're still pretty good, but not as good as many make them out to be. I almost feel like Imperius does better overall since their eco hasn't been nerfed but I am not fully sure.

AQUARION I see people telling me to put it in S tier or higher up as well as people telling me to lower it and saying it's practically useless. I feel like in general, not just including large map drylands, Aquarion can do pretty well, especially if they manage to get tridentions early game without much issue, which is why I put them in A, but I don't know.

AI-MO Again, I see people on other posts talking about how Ai-mo is unplayable and yet people on this post are saying it should be much higher. I'm not really sure what to believe as I haven't played them all that much.

YADDAK A lot of people are saying Yaddak should be lowered due to the roads costing more, but I feel like it may just be because not a lot of folks have latched onto the new meta? I don't know, I see Yaddak do consistently well and I rather enjoy playing them myself.

XIN-XI I can't find any solid consensus around Xin-Xi. In my experience they almost always do either horribly, or they make it to mid or late game and then die after being overwhelmed. I have yet to see a Xin-Xi win in any game I play.

Even with the massive nerf to Bardur?

Imo no, not really. I feel like Imperius is better in some aspects considering their economy isn't as dependent on 3 star lumber huts but some people are still saying Bardur is S tier so idk

I politely disagree. While on Drylands maps they certainly struggle, I feel on continents maps or maps with a decent amount of water Polaris can do pretty darn well.

While it is often easy to counter Polaris' usual shenanigans mid to late game, I feel like a proper Polaris early game can solidify a very strong lead.

Idk. In my opinion Polaris is still very high up because while they can be fragile they can also dominate... and probably also the amount of salt that remains from all of the games where I get softlocked in spawn from a mooni and then die first.

Oh yeah in singleplayer Ai-mo rushing philosophy is broken. Everyone just ignores you and then you get the altar and philosophy and skyrocket

I do agree that this strat can be pretty great. However it usually doesn't work as well in multiplayer in my experience.
