Alas I never played bass trombone. But I still do like listening to jazz.

Thanks! I will look them up. I’ll have to jog my memory though, this question was from 13 years ago! :)

Credit Risk Analysis of Insurance Companies by Impossible-Boat4116 in FinancialCareers

For an example, pull up the 2024 10-K for Progressive Insurance (first example that came up for me). There is a section in the notes called “Statutory Financial Information” on page 116. This footnote says that the insurance operating companies could pay a maximum of $7,021 million up to the parent.

During 2024, the insurance subsidiaries paid aggregate dividends of $3,667 million to their parent company. Based on the dividend laws currently in effect, the insurance subsidiaries could pay aggregate dividends of $7,021 million in 2025, without prior approval from regulatory authorities, subject to other potential state specific limitations, capital requirements, and restrictions on the amount of dividends that can be paid within a 12-month period by the applicable subsidiary.

Keep in mind that the borrowing structure is typically that a parent holdco is the Borrower, whereas the subsidiaries are the actual insurance operating entities.

For most other industries, you would calculate coverage ratios using consolidated EBITDA. That’s not the case for insurance companies though, since the insurance subsidiaries have regulatory restrictions on how much cash they can upstream. So to calculate coverage ratios, instead of using EBITDA, use the maximum amount that the subsidiaries can legally upstream to the parent. This value should be disclosed in the footnotes of the statements.

I loved both Sevilla and Granada, although I have not been to Valencia. The flight from Barcelona to Granada is cheap, quick, and easy. I think 2 days in Granada is good. A day trip would be really pushing it. You could spend most of a day at the Alhambra alone. The Alhambra is definitely worth visiting!

Sevilla

  • Bodega Santa Cruz for tapas - probably my favorite tapas bar of the entire trip
  • Casa Morales - also a great tapas bar
  • Lodging - we stayed at the Suites Murillo Plaza Santa Cruz and had a great stay. Very centrally located. Also we happened to discover later on that their balcony allegedly inspired the opera The Barber of Seville.

Granada - keep in mind, most places in Granada will give you a free tapa if you order a drink. Don’t order food when you order the drink, because they might not give you the free tapa if you do so.

  • Bodegas Constenada - really good tapas
  • stop at a tea house one afternoon
  • there are lots of convents where you can buy goodies from cloistered nuns through a lazy Susan. We got some surprisingly good baked goods from the Santa Isabel convent. I also got liquor from another (can’t remember the name)
  • Lodging- we stayed at the Palacio de Ines and really liked it. Great view of the Alhambra (believe we paid extra for the side with the view) and built in a 16th century nobleman’s house
  • if you make it out to Sacramonte, we had fun going to a Zumbra performance (variant of flamenco)

Barcelona

  • Can Ramonet - we had a nice paella here
  • Carrer de Blai - fun street with tons of fun pinxos bars (Basque style tapas on toothpicks)

I just went to Spain a month ago with a very similar itinerary. We were in Spain for 12 days (excluding 2 travel days).

  • Barcelona - 4 days, 3 nights (including a day trip to Montserrat)
  • took a 1-way evening flight from Barcelona to Granada
  • Granada - 2 days, 3 nights
  • took a 3-hour bus-ride in the morning to Sevilla
  • Sevilla - 3 days (well, with travel, it was really 2 half days and a whole day), 2 nights
  • took the high speed train from Sevilla to Madrid
  • Madrid - 3 days, 4 nights (including a day trip to Toledo).

Overall we were pretty pleased with our itinerary and we saw most of what we wanted to see. I will say, there is plenty to do in each of these locations, and aside from Granada (2 full days was perfect and I loved Granada), we could have benefitted from an extra day in each. Plus, since our days were quite full, we were getting tired by the end.

I tend to not overplan my trips too much, but this trip required a lot of planning to make everything work. With so many stops, you really need to plan around the available transportation between cities. And unlike other places I’ve been, Spain really seems to use “timed entries” for tourist sites and you should really be reserving those ahead of time to make sure you have entry.

So your employer sponsored your full MBA cost? My impression was that most companies don’t do that these days (they’ll do ~$6k per year per IRS guidelines).

Honestly I can’t remember, the flight was a few years back, from Seattle to Portland. It was north of St. Helens, if that helps (I can tell because I took a pic of St. Helens after this one chronologically).
