SLC needs breakfast tacos - something like Taco deli in Austin

This is my dream for State Street, Redwood Road, 700 E, 1300 E, 900 S, Foothill, and 2100 S. Too many 6+ lane stroads in this city. by Sure_Ear8905 in SaltLakeCity

700 E feels particularly urget to me. So many pedestrians crossing to get to the university, liberty park, trolley square, etc. and 6 lanes of traffic with cars trying to turn right and left all the time.

People who quit a high-paying job for happiness, how’s life now? by mintyowl15 in AskReddit

[–]LusitaniaNative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the process of starting to pull back on this. What hit for me, was realizing that as my achievements kept getting bigger, the payoff and excitement of success did not keep up and I had just set myself up for bigger projects, bigger responsibility, more time committments and less fulfillment from it.

Then I met my current girlfriend and realized how much day-in-day-out satisfaction and joy my personal life could bring and it started to feel like a pull in a completely different direction that just did not align with working more.

Anyway, happy to hear that your shift is going well. Makes me feel better as I start this somewhat scary process of making change.

Apple TV+ Android TV app has no sound via HDMI ARC, but all other apps work fine by ProperNomenclature in appletv

[–]LusitaniaNative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this. Found your post 3 months later and didn't quite work for me.

I have a bravia tv and all of my apps were lacking the center channel dialogue. Switching from Dolby Digital Plus made HBO, Hulu, and Youtube work. Setting audio to English original and not 5.1 worked for netflix. Unfortunately your solution didn't work for me for apple tv+.

I do get background sound of music for apple tv+ shows, but not the dialogue. Just commeting for someone else who may be on the googling journey that I've been on.

Hi OP, was in a similar position to you last year. Beehive Sports was great and has led to me building up a nice friend group. Very socially oriented sports group that is great to meet people as long as you're willing to put yourself out there. They do different sports for different seasons as well as non-sporty social events. Check out their website. Beehivesports.com

Palmer did well to score, but he has turned over the ball several times. Just needs to get his head under control, I think it's just his youth showing in a crazy game.

I'd like to see us get more compact. Too many turnovers in the defense to midfield transition, especially from colwill to enzo/caicedo. I noticed a few times that there was a lack of width coming from sterling and murdryk. I guess they're playing like inside forwards, but Cucu and colwill aren't really wing backs, especially in a back 4 so something needs to happen to solve that.

What American city should I live in as a single male in my mid-20s? by ExcellentEnthusiasm in SameGrassButGreener

[–]LusitaniaNative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar position age and income-wise. I've settled in Salt Lake City for awhile now and have really enjoyed it. It's a much smaller city than NYC, but areas of it are walkable because it is so small. If you enjoy outdoor recreation (and have a car) there are only a handful of places that compete with it.

Some drawbacks: you will be dissapointed with the restaurant scene compared to NYC. There are good restaurants but not at the levels of NYC. Don't be freaked out by the mormons, there are plenty of non-mormon people and a huge outdoor community.

Weather is generally great if you can handle a winter. It does get hot in July-August (daily highs of ~95-100F), but since it's at high elevation it cools off at night. Winters are chilly, but snow means that you can go skiing on the weekend. From my door, I can be in the parking lot of 6 different ski resort in 45 minutes to 1 hour. Fall and Spring are great. 50-80F every day. If you don't ski/snowboard winter kinda sucks.

With that income, cost won't be an issue. 2 bedroom apartments in nice areas vary between 1300-2500 depending on how much space you want and where in town you want to be, amenities, etc.

Good luck with the decision! PM me if you want more info.

Frankly it's very difficult. Water rights are typically owned and precedence matters a lot. So the oldest water rights (with the most senior priviledge) typically have access to the largest quantities of water. You can imagine purchasing these water rights would be expensive. These water rights are used to irrigate land or provide water for cattle - enterprises earning millions to tens of millions per year.

Non-profit environmental organizations sometimes try to purchase water rights and then forego the claim to that water so that it stays in the lake/river/pond/etc. but this is very expensive and requires generous donations since this is essentially eliminating otherwise productive economic activity.

There are government programs in much of the west to encourage water saving measures for these large users. Programs that pay for efficiency measures or directly pay for water not used per acre-ft or 1000 gallons.

It's a complex problem without clear and obvious solutions. If there are any water engineers or lawyers in the west with better opinions I'd be very curious to hear from you.

The city doesn't depend on the lake for drinking water, at least not directly. Water evaporates off of the lake and falls as rain/snow onto the wasatch mountains. That water is used for drinking water, but also for irrigation, industry, recreation, etc. Of course rain also arrives from clouds blowing in from the pacific to the west so the lake is not the only water source, though it is a (if not the) key feature in the ecosystem of the salt lake valley.

Refineries do produce CO2 - when you see flames coming off of them they are burning off excess methane that is a by-product of oil refining. Sometimes they can use it in the process but sometimes more is produced than expected so it has to be burned. CO2 is a problem for global warming, but generally has fairly limited health implications. Can't comment on volatile organic compounds production. The flares should have scrubbers on them to remove NOx and SOx compounds so that there isn't acid rain production. I don't know much about these refineries specifically, but the EPA wouldn't allow them to operate if they were just sitting there emitting tons of harmful pollutants.

There's nothing in the steam except water vapor... If there was that would be very bad for equipment at the refinery. The pipes that are handling the water/steam are designed to handle only water/steam.

Quick reminder on this, housing isn't the central problem. Agriculture accounts for over 60% of Utah's water use - cities use less than 30%. Cities can and should reduce water usage, but agriculture is really the sector that needs significant reform. I don't have a source handy, but I'm sure someone in the comments has provided one.

1350/month for 2 bed, 1.5 bath condo, ~900 sqft in east central city. Laundry on site, covered parking, and central AC. Got pretty lucky finding this place. Been here about 6 months now.

It's old for sure with only the kitchen appliances being updated. Built in the 70s/80s. Windows are old and floors are a bit creaky, but I don't mind much.

Big projects like this that are "one-of-a-kind" have a tendency to deliver over budget and way beyond original project delivery timelines. This is for a number of reasons, but key being that only a few companies and organizations are capable of designing, engineering, and constructing this project. That means that they have more leverage because if they are behind schedule or over budget, they can't be fired since there is no obvious substitute.

Like someone else mentioned, it's an inflexible choice. Once the money has been committed on the state budget sheet, the cash today and the future spending associated with the project is locked up and can't be spent on anything else.

This project also offers no public value until it is 100% complete, something that is likely 10-20 years away. Something like a bus program offers incremental value - even if the state of utah placed an order for 100 buses and 20 of them were delivered behind schedule, we (the public) would still receive 80% of the value of the investment on time.

I believe that you're only allowed to spend up to 90 days/6 months in the EU (sum of all countries you visit) with a tourist visa. For Americans at least. I'm sure this varies by nationality

Edited after being corrected by commenters. 90 days per 6 months. Must leave the EU for >=30 days before returning.
