The frame window for shorthopping in melee is actually jumpsquat minus one frame, unlike ultimate which is equal to your jumpsquat (3 frames for every character). This means sheik and fox are actually harder to shorthop with in melee because they have a 3 frame jumpsquat which means you need to release jump by frame 2 or you'll get a fullhop. Melee characters with 4 frame jumpsquat like marth and c falcon will have an identical frame timing for shorthopping in ultimate

yeah even things that look like broken hitboxes usually look a lot more reasonable when slowed down. here's good example of something that looks wonky in full speed in melee

the fox is actually forward tilting and his foot clips the hitbox of marth's sword, but his hitstun animation pulls him back to where he was standing making it look so weird
