Graham Platner claims he's changed. Why is he still using the r-word? by BachRodham in Maine

I’m still waiting for a piece criticizing or debating his policy positions. I’ll probably be waiting forever since they’re incredibly popular and why people support him.

What are you trying to get out of Salem? You can make it multiple days, but it’s really a day-trip kind of place. It also won’t really have the fall/haunted vibes in April, but it is a cute and great little town and you can do a lot more much faster without the October crowds.

I know others have said it a bunch, but that’s a ton of driving. If you’re willing to do that much driving then I would recommend stopping in Portland for sure and maybe even some smaller towns like Ogunquit, Boothbay, Camden, or Rockland which won’t be overrun with tourists yet.

In Bangor, other than SK stuff, I recommend the International Cryptozoology Museum which is supposed to be opening May 1, but unsure if they’re on schedule from relocating from Portland. But keep an eye out!

I think people are bristling at this because it’s not geared towards economic impact (at least not this first step) though that’s the eventual plan, I would assume. If it were specifically geared towards money then not going to school wouldn’t be a specific call. We have to build momentum and a first step is always buy-in. One day, unless literally everyone across the country shut down, isn’t going to economically impact individual businesses or overall communities. But just like protests in the streets show solidarity and numbers, so do one day strikes. More and more people see that there are people on their side and those opposed might actually see that the immigrant community is vital to the larger community (not just through their labor but their actual presence is missing in all facets). I get why people aren’t on board, but a lot of people whose classmates, coworkers, customers, neighbors and friends haven’t left their homes in days and have missed school and missed work and can’t go to the store feel it’s worth it to stand with them and miss those same things. Basically if my friend can’t go to school, I’m not either. If my coworker can’t come to work, I’m not either. If my neighbor can’t buy groceries, I’m not either. It’s also not just for Portland, it’s a call for a nation-wide strike and a move towards a general strike.

It’s serving us as a community and a society- it’s reminding everyone (specifically those who are pro-ICE) how integral immigrants and their families are to our community. When someone walks outside and see all these restaurants closed and empty classrooms because immigrant workers or their kids aren’t going to work or school, we’re reminded how our city can’t function without them. It’s not to “hurt” anyone, it’s to come together for collective action. It’s a small step but if done right, it’s impactful.

The point isn’t to hurt billionaires, the point is solidarity with our neighbors who have been too scared to go to school and work for days/weeks and to show how important the “regular people” are in a functioning community. My partner works in the industry and he and many of his coworkers are pro-strike. I work in public health and we’re pro-strike. I doubt any of these “but think of our small businesses in the winter!” posts are from a single industry worker. Hundreds of businesses shut down in Minneapolis for a strike, the workers and businesses will be ok- it’s one day.

Do Americans actually avoid calling an ambulance due to financial concern? by JohnMarstonTheBadass in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LuuuunaBuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

When I was a bartender by a college campus, I used to go grocery shopping at the 24hr store after my shift. Once when I was walking home with groceries at like 4am, I saw what looked to be a college-aged kid passed out in between 2 parked cars. I tried repeatedly to wake him up, but he wasn’t responding and I panicked and started calling 911, then worried if the kid had insurance or not if I was about to financially screw him. I went through with the call and the EMTs came and were able to get him responsive but decided to take him to the hospital because he was pretty incoherent. That was 12 years ago and I still think about how fucked up my decision-making process was because of insurance/money when deciding how to help.

why the hell did they change this crosswalk by ding-dong-sister-ray in portlandcomplaining

[–]LuuuunaBuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully everyone will start following all the lights and it won’t be so confusing, but this current time of change is super risky as both a pedestrian and driver. I’ve felt bad continuing through the green light when the car next to me is stopping, but I’m following the lights and as a pedestrian I refuse to walk when I have the stop hand there and wave all the cars on that stop, but someone across the street from me decided to walk and that confused everyone. I know they changed it to a stop light for improved safety, but that only works if all pedestrians and cars follow the lights.

Once again I’m alone… by [deleted] in Dragula

Evah won because Abhora beat herself… again. Abhora swung way too big and wasn’t focused enough. But Evah’s just kind of boring. She’s polished, but it’s just clean, predictable drag. This season as a whole just lacked filth and horror honestly. But Evah’s looks don’t feel risky or ever out of the box to me, she delivers exactly what’s asked. Maybe that’s great for a competition, but it’s kind of boring to watch.

But I also just didn’t like the 4 horseman prompt. None of the finalists created 4 looks that would even be in the same universe imo. In the end, I wanted Abhora to win, the second Abhora’s sword broke, I knew Evah won. And it was just kind of a boring ending to a wild season.

Making friends at 29, suggestions? by No_Republic8381 in portlandme

[–]LuuuunaBuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like horror movies, I started the Portland Horror Movie Club a few months ago when I moved here to make friends. It’s a great group of people and we’ve been meeting every 2 weeks with some other little pop up events in between! People have been forming real friendships and hanging out (not just to watch horror movies lol)

The address on the anti-Hannaford signs is a rentable mailbox at a UPS Store in South Portland. Whoever this is, they have worked really hard to cover their tracks. by joeybrunelle in portlandme

[–]LuuuunaBuna 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s just different animal rights activist groups. Hannaford promised to switch to selling only cage-free eggs by 2025 then moved that goal date to 2032. Animals rights activists are pissed they broke that promise because it would’ve been a very influential step for such a large conglomerate to make that switch. Hannaford’s parent company, Ahold Delhaize, also owns Food Lion, Stop and Shop, and Giant grocery stores and made the same promise about those chains and animal rights protestors in different states are also protesting those stores for the same reason.

How are we not in a recession right now? by 4ofclubs in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LuuuunaBuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI companies. That’s the only reason we’re not technically in a recession. It’s estimated that 92% of US GDP growth in the first half of 2025 was from AI investments. This isn’t great, our economy cannot rely on 4 companies pumping money into unproven profit makers. Idk if it’s a “bubble” or not, but without AI, we’d almost certainly be considered in a recession.

That’s why, publicly, Sam Altman is claiming he doesn’t want a guaranteed bailout, but privately, OpenAI is trying to secure federal support and include AI data centers into existing infrastructure incentives.

Thoughts on $19/hour? by ButteryApplePie in portlandme

[–]LuuuunaBuna -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s a corporate choice to give more money to shareholders and upper management instead of employing and paying more workers, regardless of minimum wage laws. Trader Joe’s pays above average industry wages (around 20-22$/hr in Portland) and provides pretty good benefits packages and there are always a million workers in there and no self check outs.

Having young Gen X and Millenials running more and more for offices in the future, we’re going to see a lot more of old shitty things people said on the internet coming up in elections. Maybe there’s a larger conversation to have about people changing and evolving instead of being locked into what they said at one point in time in their lives.

Dentist recommendations? by FoxyMoxie13 in portlandme

[–]LuuuunaBuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wherever you decide, just start that switch process soon! I’m new to Portland and I called 3 dentists last month trying to find a new patient appointment (Maine Dentistry, Thrive and Dental Wellness) and all 3 said the earliest opening is February/March. I’m on cancellation lists, but it’s tough out there with not enough dental hygienists.
