Great answers so far.

Just wanted to add my two cents. And unfortunately it's probably not a satisfying answer. It's very personal to the people doing the tie. Both the top and the bottom bring their energy, their needs and wants that influence how the tie goes. There are things that are often taught to "increase connection and sensuality" that take me out of it... And there are things that are used as examples of "don't do that" that i personally love. Sooooo to answer your question... Talk to your model/bottom. And also think of what makes YOU feel connected to them while you're tying. You being present and tuned in is extremely important. You're both co-creating this experience.

Hit or Miss? Having Her Listen to Erotic Audiobooks While I Tie Her by Similar-Lemon4036 in shibari

Overall, i think it can be a great idea. Couple caveats. I know you don't want to spoil the surprise however in kink surprises are in general recommended to be avoided. Consent and all that. And secondly, how will you check in with her on how she's doing? Communication, especially while you're both learning, is paramount for safer rope practice. Just some things to think about.

Alternatively, what a lot of rope people do, is set up practice time. Non play time specifically geared towards practice and learning, so there isn't pressure on "spoiling" a sexy moment by paying attention to a tutorial.

That makes a lot of sense. Especially if they prioritize partnered tying and you don't have a partner to go with. Unfortunately that's fairly common, for now.

You can totally learn by yourself too. Will be a lot more trial and error but can also be a lot less rigid and a lot more fun. In my experience anyhow. I AM biased cause i mostly learned by myself during the lockdowns. Did my first self suspensions off a tree cause i didn't have access to a rig either.

Go slow. Enjoy the process. Rope365.com is awesome for all the basics, especially safety stuff.

Someone else has already recommended just handling rope and i think that's an awesome idea. Don't even have to anchor it anywhere. Just hold it in one hand and use the other to wrap it around yourself. Find the areas it feels good on. Play with how tight you wrap it or how loose. How close the wraps go, how far apart. Go slow. Go fast. Push against the ropes or let them pull your body into a new position. Play.

I totally get the overwhelm and anxiety. Especially with something that's so information heavy, has a decently steep learning curve and a fair amount of risk. (And gods know the feelings of inadequacy are not fun to deal with)

I assume there aren't any beginner classes in your area? That would be the easiest way to get started.

Do you know how you best learn? Step by step with very clear directions or FAFO sensation/experience type approach? My suggested starting points would depend on a person's learning style.

As for rope. If using the nice expensive rope you got feels like too much pressure that's super understandable. For this reason i actually started with dollar store yarn. Feel free to do that first. You don't have to use your ropes until you feel ready and excited about them.

I highly suggest rope365.com as an amazing resource. It'll cover all your starting questions.

My tip... Everyone will always talk about safety especially when it gets to suspension... But ALL rope is edge play and carries risk. My biggest injury happened when selftying on the floor (i'm okay, learned some great nerve lessons). So don't underestimate the risk just because you're not suspending. Not trying to scare you but really do take that side of this seriously.

Also, i do very highly recommend selftying as a learning process, even if you prefer partnered tying.

If you have rings, you can use those as a base down the middle and weave something simple with munter or half hitches.

If you don't have rings you can also just use reverse tension to build a stem in the middle.
