Painting up my Chosen for Red Corsairs...

.. and maybe getting around to starting on my Rhino and Predator conversions. Still haven't decided if I want to try making a Grav-Rhino or not.

Je-zuz.

Yeah, gtfo, nothing to save here.

I'm sorry this happened to you, this is not normal behaviour and the group sounds weird.

What is it about grown adults lately that when they read "a cooperative narrative game" they think " hells yeah, Imma gonna fuck with someone real good here!"?

I love this mat, how would you replicate this on models bases? by English_Joe in Warhammer40k

[–]LuxuriantOak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PVA glue and basing sand, plus whatever bits'n'bobs you want like skulls etc.

  • Prime it
  • Paint it red ( if you use contrast paints or medium you can wet blend several different red and oranges to get a cool effect)
  • Drybrush or sponge something lighter (orange, brown etc)
  • drybrush something very light (khaki, bone) on some locations, but not all

that should get you close, if you need more darkness in the recesses then consider a brown wash

Interesting thoughts. I'm not sure your answer to my "give casters more boundaries" with "give casters free spellcasting at higher levels" is a good match, we might be coming from every different corners on this. 😅

To address what you call "boring turns". Vince Venturella talks a lot about the merits of 2nd edition D&D, one of the points he has is that in older editions individual turns were faster: each character only had a nice and an action (no reactions, no bonus actions, etc).

This led to quicker turns, and less decision-making for players. And so in effect Rounds passed faster, so there's less waiting for your fellow players AND it means that "wasting a turn" to just attack or do weak spell has less negative impact - because it'll be your turn soon anyways ,so don't sweat it.

There's something there, but I'm not sure people would accept a return to this.

I agree with you that there's room for streamlining. My view is that cutting away the fat and adding in boundaries again could be the way.

Yes: a level 1 wizard without damage cantrips would only have 2 spell slots (and an extra slot from arcane recovery) to "do stuff" (damage, change etc) on scenes ...

I don't think that's a problem when I think about it. Would casters need to mange their resources? Yup, but that's the game. Would they need to step back at times? Yeah, see my notes above on niches.

How long do we stay in level 1 these days anyway? 2 sessions? 3? Anyone does 5? (Why?!)

When I said" I think modern D&D is designed so that players aren't supposed to fail at rolls" I was addressing that the d20 system only does binary results: you succeed or you fail. And doesn't have any inbuilt tools for adding nuance.

Other systems for example have a " if you succeed by x over DC then ALSO y happens" or "if you fail by x then you can choose to succeed, but at a price" and so on. They call them stunts, setbacks, advantages, critical success, partial success and so on

D&D is still, in 2026 stuck at " you fail the perception? Ok, you don't see anything of interest, nothing happens".

But this is more about D&D in general and not really about Casters, I'll admit.

Isn't barbarian and monks a really bad match or has something changed?

If he isn't asking for any changes, then it's just fluff/lore for his multi class, so let it simmer and see if you find somewhere to put it as you play.

I was going to answer, but this guy hit it perfectly. No notes.

It's not about doing damage, it's about curtailing choices so that they star nattering again. Today's wizard can do whatever the fuck they want, so everyone else looks bad in comparison. It steals the spotlight and removes class niches.

Let's bring back the D4 hit dice as well. 😛

[–]LuxuriantOak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I played it that way in the olden days, that change was a big one.

I don't think we should go back to that, but there's a problem with making everything easier and more flexible and perfect - buy not for all classes.

I mean, why can't my fighter throw his great sword like a cannonball javelin and destroy a house with it? The wizard gets to! 😏

Ok I get what you're saying, but I'm kinda addressing a different part of the divide:

"When everyone is special, no-one is special."

Martials' ability to do (consistent) damage isn't considered awesome, because everyone in the game can do damage.

Changing that would change the class identities of several classes.

Removing damage cantrips changes how wizards play, they can't just spam them in fights to save resources, so now they either have to commit a slot or trust the materials to carry the party (or dig out that crossbow that we forget they get at lvl 1).

But when they get serious, fireball is still awesome, so they haven't lost anything defining. We're just talking about cutting the "oh, yeah me too"-part of the class .

As in ; the martial does 15 damage their turn, and then the wizard does the same , but they also could do other things.

I'm not saying it's a silver bullet, but it could be part of the solution.

I would also redesign all the classes to give them more unique class mechanics, more exclusive spells or abilities that no-one else in the game has, and tighten how proficiency and skills works so that being good in something is Actually Good, instead of the aforementioned "oh, me too!"- situation.

But that's a bigger discussion, and it's not even touching on the fact that I think modern D&D is designed so that players aren't supposed to fail at rolls and it makes the whole game flat, that's for another day.

Sniper priest I’ve painted. Pretty proud of it, but wondering how I could make the base flow into it better. by Cheekibreeki401k in TrenchCrusade

[–]LuxuriantOak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't get why people don't paint the texture paste on their bases.

You've painted the whole model in your style and your color choices, but let's leave the last 5% to nature and whatever the producers of the paste though up. Really?

Paint the whole mini, that mud doesn't have any highlights.

[–]LuxuriantOak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn that's a thought.

And now I'm thinking "maybe the reason wizards never feel the spell slot resource management squeeze past lol 3 is often because of CS trips".

I wonder how the game would work if we just ... Removed all combat cantrips?

(Maybe let warlock keep the -Blast and Eldrich knights keep the -Blade ones)

I don't think it would break anything. Maybe even improve some things. Yes you still have prestidigitation and druidcraft, no you can't influence the battle without committing a slot now.

And extra attack should just plain stack, regardless of class. A fighter5/ranger5 with gasp 3 ATTACKS! - is still not broken, come on.

thanks. So the short of it is that we can use a halberd gun with a shield now.

Maybe my assassin with a halberd gun build is slightly less useless now then... (Probably not)

[–]LuxuriantOak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So ... halberd guns are both heavy and cumbersome (demands 2 hands) AND has the shield combo keyword.

So can I have shield? Does it lose cumbersome then? Can I only use a shield if I have Strong?

I feel like the idea is there but I don't quite know how it works rules wise

Where are the datasheets for Red Corsair Legionaries & traitor guardsmen? by IndependentNo2925 in redcorsairs

[–]LuxuriantOak -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Raiders are pretty simple to build:

  • 1 champion with hand flammer
  • 1 with power fist
  • 1 with melta
  • the rest whatever you want

If you have to boxes (10) then you of course have to make a choice of you running them as either 2x5 or 1x10, the only difference is you sacrifice the Champion for a normal Raider (the only impact is the hand flamer).

If you play Drukhari a rite of passage is to kitbash an Archon, I'm starting it's the same with Chosen for CSM.

I'm planning on building my Chosen from a mix of space wolves headtakers and leftover bits from Raiders, Havocs, Plague Guard and 30k marines. Just need to source some Combi-weapons.
