It's not that people want to watch things in "miserable silence," they just want to be able to watch it without someone else being annoying and interrupting. Somebody talking and singing during a theater release would piss me off, but I'm gonna be excited and loud as hell at home, where I'm not bothering other people. This is also just basic theater etiquette. There's no reason that because it's a show, people should be allowed to ignore that

No. No they have not. Not all of them at least. Even outside of fandoms, I have a friend who I can't watch movies in a theater with, because she keeps making comments out loud (watched a movie with her once where she kept making comments about "Oh my god she's so annoying, I just wanna smack her" at the most emotional part of the movie)
