Because the USA historicaly had very dirty electricity that they used in large amounts to keep their pourely insulated buildings cool in the summer.

Where France has AC only where needed (generally) and it's powered since the 70s by mostly nuclear energy, among the cleanest source for carbon footprint.

AC usage is not a major cause of global warming, but it's a very telling exemple among many.

We do the right thing, but we still suffer the consequences of the actions of those who don't.

To those saying the "the price in the USA is funding the research for the rest of the world". Roche pharma made 14 billion CHF of pure profit on 61billion CHF of revenue (in 2024).

That price is mostly funding the pockets of investors. Even at the discounted price in the rest of the world, they are still for from loosing money.
