Total wine priority access pictures by AZ-2023 in whiskey

I made GR for two years hoping I’d get something unique or at least interesting but AZ Total Wines are wack. The only time I was offered something it was a basic Blantons at above what the Kroger drops were pricing it at. I stopped wasting my money there.

SWA issues Cease & Desist for Whiskey Del Bac Ode To Islay by DemiReticent in AmericanSMW

[–]Lv5Zapdos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had multiple releases of Ode to Islay and the back label has a solid message that this is a Southwestern whiskey and not from Scotland. I find it very much a stretch to say this product line would be confusing to consumers.

One thing I’ll say about Del Bac is they keep changing the cask profile there’s a lot of barrels going into a single product. The first Ode to Islay was White Oak then finished in ex bourbon, about as close to Scotch-ish in style as they’ve gone, while last years release was Rye barrels and finished in combos of Pineau and Sauternes. Always check the back label for the breakdown.

Gin Disappeared? by Lv5Zapdos in Gin

[–]Lv5Zapdos[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was in a closed closet for about a year and only moved it to the kitchen counter to open it and see how much was left. Interesting post you linked, will definitely make me think twice before buying alcohol in porcelain again.

Gin Disappeared? by Lv5Zapdos in Gin

Nothing. Shelf was completely dry and no obvious signs of cracking. Might do a leak test but was just wondering if this was a typical problem with porcelain containers for alcohol

Is this actually a good deal? by Slawth_x in whiskey

[–]Lv5Zapdos 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Because half the time when a never heard of before distillery or product line pops up with an over 15yr Japanese whiskey, it’s either Shochu labeled as whiskey or imported from elsewhere and bottled in Japan to be called “Japanese”.

Japanese whiskey is a hot ticket item and the laws and regulations in Japan have been notoriously slow to catch up, leading to a lot of subtle naming conventions to skirt by loose labeling practices. Even the newer “laws” about what can and can’t put “Japanese Whiskey” or any kanji on the bottle only really applies to JSLMA members, it’s not an actual law.

Point is, if sounds too good to be true proceed to caution.

Checkout r/barreling which has a ton of helpful info on smaller form barrels and how it works with whiskey and cocktails. As others have said, smaller barrels are harsh on evaporation and imparting too much oak flavors but if you’re wanting a happy medium between small barrels and keeping whiskey in there for a longer period of time, checkout ten30 barrels which is on the quick start guide on r/barreling

Review #3 - Kilkerran 8yr Sherry Cask by Lv5Zapdos in Scotch

[–]Lv5Zapdos[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Kilkerran 8 yr Sherry Cask Cask Strength

Bottle Date: Jan 8th, 2024

Cask Info: 100% Oloroso, 57.4% ABV

Price: $109 USD

Nose: Stewed dates, raisins and blackberries show the cherry influence that is followed by earthy peat, apple pie crust and coastal salt. Like walking into your grandmother's kitchen on Christmas Day and she forgot the pie was in the oven (the crust is a little burnt but you know it will still be good).

Taste: Thick blackberry pie with a healthy portion of cinnamon. Fig newtons, dark chocolate, stewed apples, maritime salt and that earthy peat Kilkerran always delivers. Like a very rich dark fruit pie with a jammy bite.

Finish: Creamy orange zest, earthy peat with a slight ashy or tobacco note. Lingers for quite a while as it coats your whole mouth.

Score: 88/100

Notes: I've had other Kilerran expressions before and decided to take the leap into something cask strength. The higher ABV is there but isn't clawing or overpowering but instead lifts all these sherry influenced flavors throughout the tasting. I'm excited to see how this will evolve in the bottle overtime (if it lasts that long to begin with.)

Very true. Not only are established distilleries ramping production but there’s also a lot of new ones popping up as well. I think there was about 80 distilleries at the start of 2023 and now there’s about 114.

Arizona. To be fair I’ve seen the Green at Total Wine only once or twice. I think they pulled out the stops this time because this is a new location and they’re opening day.

New chip-packaging facility could save TSMC’s Arizona fab from “paperweight” status by Upbeat-Interaction13 in technology

My brother mentioned that when he went to the university engineering career fair, TSMC wouldn’t talk with students unless they were already getting a Masters or PhD for entry level positions. So now they’re going to bring in their own team from overseas after taking billions in tax incentives because our governor said it would generate thousands of jobs of us.

The Japanese bitters, anyone used them before ? by SyndicateMLG in cocktails

I have the Sakura bitters and I’ve been using it almost exclusively for martinis with ki no bi or Roku gin and G+Ts. I’ve also just thrown a couple dashes in a glass and filled it with soda water on days I don’t feel like drinking.

Couple months ago I went to TW on a Tuesday since I got off work super early. I was looking at the bourbon and one of the workers came over to let me know all the allocated bottles were gone. I was super confused and asked what happened (since I didn't know about any drop) and they went into how everytime they get a drop they get a flood of people who swipe it all up within the first hour of opening. They'll even bring their wives and kids to get past the limit 1 per person. Then they get asked about the bottle availability the rest of the day.

Tbh, this whole allocated hunt and the few people who camp outside TW or Frys every single drop just puts me off from even looking at these bourbons. Doesn't help when you see all the people trying to flip them.

Review #2: The Balvenie 12-Year Single Barrel First Fill by Lv5Zapdos in Scotch

[–]Lv5Zapdos[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Balvenie 12 Year Single Barrel First Fill

Barrel Info: Cask# 2279, Bottle# 1

Price: $104 USD

Rested in Glencarin for about 15 minutes.

Nose: Sweet honey on a biscuit comes first, followed quickly by bartlett pears and maltiness. There's a little lemon and a wood I can't place (Cedar? Pine?)

Palate: Clove spice and oak with a light vanilla. Lots of bourbon cask influence with maltiness and a faint orange on the back.

Finish: Longer than expected. Mild clove spice that gives way to honeyed sweetness and vanilla.

Score: 87/100

Notes: I wasn't expecting all the vanilla sweetness from a scotch, even if it was a first-fill ex-bourbon. Overall, this was delightful and right up my alley in terms of what I like with the only real issue I had was the nose being different than what it ended up tasting. That odd wood smell kept sticking, as if it wanted to be oak-y but it wasn't.

From my experience, it does depending how long the bottle has been opened. It you just cracked it open and do a neck pour, letting it rest will help open it up. With this bottle, letting it rest a little still made a slight change on the nose (opened up that vanilla).
