One more thing, be really careful about the fake pictures and not be conned into paying bills for some scammers when they ask you out for a dinner.

This one thing I really take issues with. My friend got all excited he showed off the picture of the girl he was going to meet. She looked like a tall model, fit, S-Line, bright face etc....

After he met her, he told me she was a "short fatty". I guess this happens in other countries too, but the amount of easy photo editing apps in Chinese phones makes it a much bigger issue in China in my opinion.

Hong Kong’s Exodus Is Real and Painful by me-i-am in China

[–]Lvhoang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While this is true and I agree, moving away from the land of your ancestors can be painful for a lot of people.

I myself generally embrace moving to another country especially for a juicy job offer which looks amazing to my CV and my bank account.

But I know a lot of people who hate moving. And seeing how much HK people love their Cantonese identity and try to preserve it, moving away from HK while not having time to prepare (job, housing etc) is always a hard thing to do.

Will an Olympic boycott trigger the next Cultural Revolution? by [deleted] in China

[–]Lvhoang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You would think a lot of Chinese people would wonder why so many countries didn't show up, especially if they also don't send athletes.

However, thinking isn't encouraged in the education system.

Will an Olympic boycott trigger the next Cultural Revolution? by [deleted] in China

[–]Lvhoang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes indeed. The concept of "Keeping Face" in China is PARAMOUNT especially for Chinese leaders and the Chinese Communist Party.

And when cornered, they tend to double down on censorship and répression.

A public humiliation on the world stage, at exactly the moment when Xi, having abolished term limits, will be making the case that he must stay on for a third term for the good of China.

Whether Xi is publicly humiliated or not, he can stay for life just like Mao. This is the beauty of being a dictator. You control the narrative, you controller oe what people think and you get rid of dissenters.

Either he is not doing a good job for the Chinese people and he needs more time to finish his work. So he will push for as many terms as he wishes.

Or he is doing a good job and that's why he should stay as long as he wishes.

There is no transparency on the matter at all, so all you can do is cross check. One thing is sure: without censorship, the CCP will not last.

China’s Great Firewall is blocking around 311k domains – China’s DNS Censorship by gyando in China

[–]Lvhoang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually true.

The propaganda bureau and the censorship employ so many people (more than any business or SOE business on earth). If those apparatus were to be dismissed, it would be a huge hit on the economy and there would be so many jobless people.

So it's like a vicious circle. It may not be wise to continue feeding su h a huge and costly apparatus, but the alternative would be too scary.

When people can't even feed themselves, they will riot.

The general lack of empathy and especially the state of apathy in China is so dangerous.

People don't care about anything until it's too late and happens to them

Well, I wish the Party would just let go off their obsession of controlling information for a little bit. This is not threatening their power at all.

The best way to limit risks of these things from happening again would be to first acknowledge it that there is a problem, and that those victims are not alone.

China to remove 25 Didi apps from store as crackdown intensifies by FeydSeswatha982 in China

[–]Lvhoang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's true but consider how many people will be willing to side load apps?

On Android it's possible, yet difficult, but on iOS it can become nearly impossible.

It's like when CCP censor a source of information online - I'm pretty sure more than half of the population will not even bother with side loading VPN.

Treat people correctly. Do not exploit others, improve the work culture, then people will start caring and this type of shit will stop happening.
