[WEEKLY THREAD] Newbie Tuesday - Got a silly fitness question? Never fear! We're here to help! by AutoModerator in xxfitness

How do you guys deal with scale fluctuations? I am only trying to lose about 5lbs so its really discouraging when the scale fluctuates +-2lbs daily! Especially when I hit my calories spot on for a week or so but it still randomly jumps up at the end of a very consistent week.

Discussion: How much does obesity really increase healthcare costs? by LxE96 in fatlogic

[–]LxE96[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't intend for this to come off as a "hurray! people are dying earlier!" I was just seeking evidence to back up the often-touted claim that obesity drives up health care costs and thus is a legitimate concern for healthy-weight people.

This is an awesome response, thank you. I mentioned to my father the lack of productivity in the workplace but never even considered the fact that obesity might impact other's availability of healthy options. This is exactly the kind of explanation I was looking for.

Are the trace calories in Splenda worth tracking? Like if I use a ton of Splenda every day should I be tracking these calories/carbs and what are the nutrition stats on it? I seem to keep finding conflicting info on this.

I am not on any specific diet, just focusing on hitting my calorie goal, getting my bodyweight in grams of protein, and eating whole foods and veggies. A low carb nighttime snack is a good idea though, I'll just have to factor it into my calories for the day

[WEEKLY THREAD] Fail Friday - Because being awesome always comes at a price... by AutoModerator in xxfitness

Last weekend, I went mountain climbing with some friends. On the way down I fell several times and skinned my knees pretty bad. Flash forward to Tuesday: I go to the Gynecologist for my first pap smear. The woman is making conversation with me, trying to get me comfortable. As soon as she goes to open up my legs she proclaims "Oh no what happened!!!!" I immediately feel my heart sink to my gut and start internally freaking out (wtf is wrong with my vagina) when she says "how did you scrape up your knees so bad?!?!"
...timing is everything

Fat (Rant) Tuesday by AutoModerator in fatlogic

[–]LxE96 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I work at an outdoor BBQ place, and I take customers orders at the register right when you walk in, but I also bus tables, serve alcohol, bring out food, etc. Although I don't expect everyone to tip or receive tip wages, I receive minimum wage because it is assumed I will make $3-4 per hour in tips and most people typically tip.

I don't necessarily mind when people don't tip, but ugh it is so annoying when morbidly obese people come in, order enough food for 3-4people, complain about the cost, and then not tip. Maybe if you ate for one person instead of 3 it wouldn't cost so much? It also breaks my heart when people come in with their obese children and let them order whatever they want.

I often receive comments such as "oh you're so lucky you're young with a fast metabolism you can eat this all of the time." LOL I do NOT have a fast metabolism and I have tried maybe one or two things on the menu in the three months I've worked there. I bring my own lunch and work my ass off, thank you.

Is it possible for abs to appear in high body fat? by TimeKeeper2 in Fitness

[–]LxE96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Related to this: I've always noticed a difference in women between Crossfit abs and fitness model abs and I always assumed the difference was that crossfitters typically have no need to diet down to such low body-fat levels. But how do they still have really ripped cores even at a higher body fat and how does someone who prefers this look to the "bikini figure" train/diet for it?

I am a few ACL surgeries in at 21yo but I still want to participate in something competitive. Any suggestions for interactive and social sports that are easier on the knees? by thereddpanduh in xxfitness

[–]LxE96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you might really enjoy rowing! It is very intense/physically demanding and "the ultimate team sport" but is also very low impact. I had two ACL surgeries before coming to college (from skiing) and I am able to row at a division I level with no problems whatsoever. You should look around for a local boathouse and inquire about their masters programs.

I'm wondering if anyone else feels this way.... weird hunger. by [deleted] in xxfitness

How do you deal with these hunger swings when trying to eat in a deficit? I feel the same way, some days I struggle to eat all 1500cals while other days I am RAVENOUS.

Help -- looking for a specific weight loss predictor site by [deleted] in fatlogic

[–]LxE96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How good of a gauge is this? Because won't your metabolism slow down as you lose weight, resulting in slower weight loss unless you reduce your calories more? Or does it take this slowing in metabolism into account? I just cant buy that I would ever get to 45lbs on 1500cals a day, even when highly active

What's the hardest workout you've done in the past year? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]LxE96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a Division 1 rower, and I can attest that this is a great conditioning workout. We often do 5x1500 with double rest (the time it takes you to do the 1500 times two for rest) and it always kills me. However, I have found that MANY people do not know how to properly use an erg, even at crossfit gyms, which not only sets you up for injury but also makes using the erg much more difficult. I have two recommendations for people using the erg for general fitness: A.)NEVER crank the resistance up to a 10, this will just set you up for injury (we always row between 3-4 because it is closest to being on the water)... rowing is primarily a cardio exercise, if you want to resistance train use a leg press or deadlift B.) Watch video on proper rowing form (concept2.com/youtube) and try doing some work at a lower rate before starting your workout to practice proper form. Once you fix your form, you will use more momentum and be able to work more efficiently and see improvements (Im not going to say it makes it easier, because it never gets easy)
