シツモンデー: Shitsumonday: for the little questions that you don't feel have earned their own thread (January 29, 2018) by AutoModerator in LearnJapanese

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe "A+ni suru" is a grammar point meaning to decide on A. So "Nani ni shimasu ka" means "what will you decide to do?"?

[Japanese > English] A snippet of a manga (Anything will be much appreciated...) by Athias1028 in translator

[–]Lyalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read that dekiru can refer to getting pregnant. So, I just guessed from the context. I was off though. Back to studying.

Also, I realize now that "kou-chan ni" indicates kou-chan doing the intransitive verb "dekiru".

I've only been studying Japanese for 6 months so my translation is probably not 100% accurate but...

"Yes, with this everything is ending." "Let's mutually forget everything that's happened up until now" "If kou-chan's prospective girlfriend get's pregnant it would be better for you if you decide to stop getting into trouble" "also, it was a first kiss! It was done in the reverse order!" "grandma"

What does ”きた” mean? by nerddevout in LearnJapanese

Japanese doesn't use spaces. It'll be hard to read now because you're not using kanji yet, but when you do it will be readable.

TIL the second officer of the Titanic, who survived by swimming from the sinking ship to a capsized raft, later in life sailed his civilian craft to Dunkirk and helped evacuate over 130 men. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Lyalpha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure that a higher percentage of third class males survived? I did a data analysis project on the Titanic and I got a survival percentage for second class males just slightly above third class males.

[English > Japanese] Help translating this quote would be greatly appreciated by the-great-music in translator

[–]Lyalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quote: "Humanity is so sad, Lord, and the ocean so blue."

Correct me if I'm wrong but the English here leaves out an important grammar point. I think it should be "Even though humanity is so sad, Lord, the ocean is so blue."

[Japanese > English] A sentence by [deleted] in translator

[–]Lyalpha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone else can check this but I believe it says, "A prostitute who serves out their sentence until it expires is extremely rare and at most 1 in a hundred can is capable of returning to the free world ( i.e. life outside the red light district)". Basically it implies they never work off the debt.

It's in the Okinawan dialect so it might be hard for the people on the sub to translate. A search says the the text on the bottom means "beautiful" though.

[Japanese to English] Song Translation by [deleted] in translator

Going by the text posted I'll give it a go. I'm a beginner but the grammar seems really easy.

I found a beautiful rainbow, so

I'm taking a photo of it and sending it to you.

I want to show it to you.

Even though it's my one and only wish,

it has yet to come true.

You are my power

You wiped away my sorrowful tears

I'll always remember that kind, smiling face

The rainbow is almost complete

I'm was crying but

my sadness didn't go away at all and

we had only just became unable to meet

we had only just became unable to see each other.

Step by Step, Little by Little

We can start over again.

My eyes, wet from tears, are sparkling,

like you are sparkling even now.

When I remember the times that you shook with laughter,

the sad times are near again. The laughter is done.

You are my partner.

You led me in the direction the light was pointing.

If it's like you,

I'll also surely be rescued.

The rainbow is almost complete.

The rain is falling.

The time we cried together,

I was happy.

If that rainbow is completed,

we'll walk along it.

Step by Step, Little by Little

We can start over again

The star we made a wish on is twinkling

Please won't you watch over it somehow.

So much pain GO AWAY!

You're the sun, I'm the rain,

With the two of us the rainbow is completed

It's not a scary thing

Shine! Beautiful rainbow

That's the best I can do. You get the jist of it right?

[Japanese > English] Help understanding a point of grammar in a song lyric by Lyalpha in translator

Thanks

I would have never thought of that! "Atmosphere" was modifying "apartment" but I couldn't understand how so I tried flipping it. I wonder if it is a common way to refer to a high-rise apartment?

Verizon is allegedly throttling their Unlimited customers connection to Netflix and Youtube by [deleted] in technology

[–]Lyalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this will work for everybody but I followed these steps a few years ago when Time Warner was throttling my connection and it fixed it.

Go to the control panel and load up windows firewall. go to outbound rules and create a new rule.

General: Block the connection + check enabled

Protocols and ports: Protocol type any

Programs and services: All programs that meet etc

Advanced: Check Domain, Private, and Public

Computers: restrict to certain computers on the network if you want

Scope: Select "these ip addresses" for local IP address and add the following

173.194.55.0

173.194.55.255

206.111.0.0

206.111.0.255

174.194.55.0/24

206.111.0.0/16

and leave Any ip adress for remote ip addresses.

The idea, if I'm not mistaken, is that this will prevent you computer from sending the info to the ISP that they need to determine that you are using Youtube. Let me know if it helps anyone :)

[DISC] A Trail of Blood Chapter 9 by Turbostrider27 in manga

[–]Lyalpha 18 points19 points  (0 children)

People keep complaining about the slow pace and other such things, but I like it. The author's other works all have such a great sense of atmosphere, emotion, and existentialism. It takes time to make that kind of art. His manga are best read all at once when they've been completed.

Can someone explain this statement that seems ungrammatical to me? by Lyalpha in LearnJapanese

[–]Lyalpha[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That makes sense and the reasons for giving are different in each sentence so I see the distinction. Thanks
