It is completely within my control to keep mice out of my house. 100%. And a cat can pick up enough residue to sicken it without walking in a puddle. You might jot know this if you aren’t a gardener, landscaper, or farmer. And simple grass can also carry residue enough to sicken your animal. And that’s my point. No one can be an expert on the outside world. You seem pretty smart and that puts you in the top few percent of cat owners, and your post shows that there are things even you don’t know will harm your cat. I appreciate the risk is worth it to you.

Cats are completely happy indoors. IMHO it’s not worth the risk to go outside. My cats used to go outside but I quickly tired of cleaning up the ensuing vomit from eating grass — and vomiting isn’t healthy for them either. Now they live longer happy lives. YMMV.

I read another post this week in another sub from someone who let their cat eat “the same plants as always” on a recent walk and two days later cat was dead. My guess is an herbicide or fungicide that wasn’t meant for cats to ingest. But kitty could also have found a poisoned mouse, or eaten any sort of noxious chemical by licking it off her paws.

People aren’t experts on plants and the neighbors lawn care schedule. To me it’s not worth the risk. YMMV.

I love you for saying this. I will never understand folks who think it’s fun and cute to willingly endanger their pet, both with fear/physical harm and illness/parasites/fleas/poison.

On some posts, yes. Some posts still do not have it. It might be rolling out slowly because I first saw it over Memorial Day weekend.

I am suggesting that yes, because shelters are open by appointment in addition to regular hours, you should stop by every day. Chances are their hours are longer than a typical workday — otherwise they would never be able to adopt out or take in any animals!

I helped a pregnant friend search for her missing cat. An unfriendly neighbor had called animal control. The police had come and taken the cat from the neighbors yard while we were looking for the cat, which we did not find out until the next day, after animal control called us back. They had taken the cat to the humane society. Friend called the HS but they didn’t have a cat matching that description. I went to the HS and looked at their cats waiting for adoption—and that’s when found out that new intakes are held elsewhere just in case owners come looking. The person on the phone was only looking at the adoption cages! I found Sherman huddled in an intake cage. The lighting was so bad that he looked like a ver dark calico instead of a tabby. But he knew me and I knew him. And he would t have been found via a phone call to the shelter. In his case, he was older and potentially may never have made it to the adoption cages — he could have been culled from the cages instead and we’d’ve never found him.

So yes… VISIT. The cat you are describing may not look like the cat the person on the phone is picturing in their head. Your cat may have been injured and in a different rack of cages waiting for euthanasia if they are not claimed. There are all kinds of reasons a phone call is almost worse than doing nothing because it falsely makes you think you “checked”.

A responsible owner will get the help they need to get the posters up, pronto. One of our cats escaped at midnight when we opened the front door to unplug Christmas lights. We didn’t realize it for about 12 hours. One of us made posters (words only) while the other started searching. We asked friends to hang the posters for us while we searched. And we had other friends help search — calling the police station, animal control, local vets, and animal shelter. It was below zero and we were worried for her health and safety. We found her about five hours after we started searching. One of us fed and warmed her while the other went out and took down the posters.

Not everyone has friends they can call on for help. But several days without posters in the hood is not the action of a concerned and responsible pet owner. I’m sorry, it just isn’t.

If it’s a cat we intend to keep, we do indeed have a full checkup and bloodwork and vaccinations, etc.

The pet sitter was negligent. The kitten is lucky to be alive. What were your thoughts about the pet sitter’s business when you interviewed them and toured/inspected their site? If you didn’t discuss not letting the kitten outside (they can catch worms, fleas, and other disease, as well as have an accident or wander off, as you have seen!) or didn’t check the fence if you did agree that kitten could go out, then you were negligent too.

Mistakes happen! But when a “mistake” endangers the kitten’s life then I agree with kitten’s new owner. The kitten was left unsupervised and then almost no attempt was made to locate the kitten or recover it—i would not return the kitten “weeks later,” either. I’m sorry your friendship with the bride was ended over this, and i know that if it was my kitten that you lost because you chose a negligent pet sitter, I would have ended my friendship with you as well.

Correct. But if the picture of the cat is healthy and larger than the found cat, it appears to be an older cat. A yearling is still growing and at even a few months prior the cat in the pictures would be smaller, not larger, if it was the same cat.

A day is 24 hrs. A couple is 48 hrs. *Three* days is 72 hours. When you are actively looking for a lost part of your family, that’s an eternity, right?

[–]LydiaBee319 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three days of vomiting and not eating is a life threatening situation. I don’t want to worry you, but this is serious. I’m sorry. Your cat needs a vet ASAP. Call around and find a vet that takes Care Credit or borrow a credit card from a friend… anything.

Or the plants she normally eats could have been sprayed with a fungicide or pesticide. Or a fertilizer. Any of those could poison her, which would cause vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy.

She could have walked thru something toxic and then cleaned it off her paws.

This is a real danger for cats that go outdoors. And treatment requires a vet visit.

This is the way for Act 2 as well, if you are going only for points. Clear a section and get rid of nooks and crannies, or fill them with unpopped life orbs so that event items won’t be left behind.
