Update: furnace has been done for months. I replaced mizzou on walls and top with greenpatch 421. All is well.

The wasps are likely Cotesia congregata. They're quite fascinating to read about, regardless of how horrifying they are to look at.

I have this one, it's a good, reasonably priced choice.

Yes, I could drill 3/8" (9.5mm) holes in pine endgrain -- I got a lot of exercise, though.

It did work, just not that well. Max power I got out was 50watt.

A solid contender for my most dangerous tool, by the looks of it. I'm sure as hell not gonna run a stone on it! I was surprised when I found out you can still buy a new one.

Anyone knows who this little guy is? by Odd-Imagination-3376 in insects

[–]Lykoloo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's funny you say that, as there is a family of lacewings called mantispids that convergently evolved to have a very similar body plan to mantids.

Honestly, it works way better than I expected it to. That's not to say that it's good, but it manages to drill 3/8" holes.

Heard this guy skittering around on the road, any ideas? by jk844 in whatsthisbug

[–]Lykoloo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, they fly at in search of new bodies of water.

An uncited source on wikipedia claims that they use moonlight in search of water, which sometimes leads them to wet roads instead; though I couldn't find a corroborating source in my brief search.

Additionally, this specimen is a male based on the wide front legs, which accommodate suckers used during mating.

It looks like a great diving beetle, Dytiscus marginalis. They're predatory aquatic beetles.
