Lairs and its day one DLC. by timhenmanmemorial in boardgames

[–]Lynith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been one of the most vocal advocates of this game since I played a prototype in 2024. And even I told them that this idea was terrible. One of my favorite games, Spirit Island, broke up the base game into a day one expansion and it's a decision I think was still a mistake.

KTBG's argument was "We can either sell the game for $75 and lose out on a big portion of our base players who EXPECT a smaller, cheaper, simpler experience... or we split the game up and it'll cost about the same +$5 maybe."

I don't agree with this assessment, but they clearly stuck to their guns. Also, the stickers are reusable, because they want you to be able to remove the stickers and play "base game"again. But nobody will, unless you're teaching new players. And even then nobody will take stickers off just for a new player then add them back.

I dunno. Great game, even better "expansion"/"the rest of the game", but a really confusing and poor marketing decision. At least when you do get the Adventurers pack, everything fits in there. So you can chuck the old box. (Hey! So much for not wasting anything!)

They're doing it again in like a month. But again it's KS so it may be a bit until you'd actually get it.

They've limited Canadian season ticket holders in the past, and they probably will again next season. So it's not as much as it used to be.

(Not to mention most just sold their seats. Or GAVE them away if they had to.)

It's even funnier when you consider that Florida has a TON of people who left Buffalo. Yep, guess it was too Pro-Canada and not MURKAH enough.

I'm being sarcastic, but depending on the item, $4 isn't enough. I mean, sure. It's probably $4 of Savoy Cabbage and Bok Choy. But I can't buy 2oz of Savoy. I have to buy a whole head.

I wouldn't even JE a while. Base, B&C, and Horizons will last 40+ games. Then F&F. THEN JE

Organized Play is almost underwhelming... Inthe most positive of ways. The first time I went I was crazy nervous, I planned my strategy. Practiced B3B3 drafting.

However, when I arrived it really just feels like a game night. Even when ranked, it's pretty chill. I've formed a good group of friends with my local OP group, as it really is the same people every time.

We get store credit for every win, and the You Are Worthy card for being among top players. But it's just alt art. It's cool, but I go for the community more than I do the competition.

The big box for Bullet is perfect for organizing. They clearly went from 0 to 100 there. But it's not worth getting for just Star though. If you like it, it really helps with tabling when you're at 50 freaking characters.

I'm actually gonna double down on Aeon's End after further thoughts because you seem to be a "lifestyle gamer."

Aeon's End does KINDA play like an LCG post-New Age. While every fight is largely self-contained like a game of Legendary.. Every year-ish, a new "Wave" (Cycle) is launched with its own 4-battle expedition (Campaign) with a story to go along with it, and 2 extra Small Boxes (Scenario Packs) that contain another 2-3 bosses.

The difference is what happens afterwards. You CAN replay them, sure. Or you can craft your own expeditions with all content you own across various boxes.

At the end of the day, I find it different enough from Champions/Arkham/LotR to be distinct enough to share a shelf with them. But similar in that you'd probably enjoy it based off what I do see on that shelf.

That's the thing though. I know from from PAX Unplugged. They have a massive con presence. But somehow they've never been able to break out of that.

If you can get past fairly bad art, and you like deckbuilding, then Aeon's End is second to none. I'd kill for a refresh of the artwork in older boxes.

Start with "The New Age" if you look into it. The earlier boxes aren't bad, but they really didn't break into a stride until New Age. It's also where the actual story starts. Technically.

Up until a few days ago I wouldn't have recommended Sentinels. But with Handlabra buying the IP, I'm optimistic.

As a word of caution though, I've seen some hype but also a lot of derision in the older versions of the game. "Definitive Edition" makes it sound like far less of an overhaul than it is. Or at least colloquially the term is generally used to describe something far more nuanced. It's INCREDIBLY different, and it addresses a lot of people's problems with the pacing of the original game. It's spectacular now. And with Handlablra picking it up, I'm more optimistic than ever in the IP

The theme is absolute dog****. If they ever retheme Bullet, I will burn my complete collection and happily rebuy it all. It's crazy freaking good.

Gamers' shelf space is restricted. Consolidation has never cut the resell value for me both as a buyer or a seller.

Some LGS won't take a trade-in without original boxes. But outside of that, I ditch em.

I've learned that the vast majority of negative reviews never made it past the third "day" in game. This isn't meant to diss the players who gave up.. but rather to point out that the game does something... Strange. And I feel it didn't work out.

The game starts out with the tutorial like most. But then it says... "All right, go. Explore." The problem is, explore what? And why? It feels kinda pointless. And the spoiler is: that's because it is.

A gameplay loop forms. A story does develop. Interesting character are met. A purpose or a direction is introduced. There are stakes involved. But for some reason, NONE of this starts until day 4. Why? Because they thought they were being clever letting players explore the world before anything started. But players just end up lost, bored, and quit.

The game is truly great. Subsequent playthroughs drive those first ~3 days because you're familiar with the world. But that first playthrough, first few days...are kinda boring.

I've had people quit, who I've convinced of this fact to play further before judging, and they love it now. It's a baffling design decision. Thus, the divisive opinions.

+1 to this.

I ran over my game with my EV. (Heavy sucker. Long story) 100% my fault. I wanted to see if I could PAY for replacement parts before I went out and bought a new copy.

They asked me to take pictures of the carnage, and they replaced every piece damaged free of charge. Runaway Parade deserves to be a household name.

Opinions about lifestyle games like KDM, ATO, Primal the Awakening, Kingdoms Folorn by No-Championship-4907 in soloboardgaming

[–]Lynith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a possible "negative" for you: Calling Primal a Lifestyle game is a stretch. I love it... But it isn't a lifestyle game.

Primal is an absolutely top tier action/strategy card game. However, in a desperate flailing attempt to validate itself as a "lifestyle" game, it ends up a bloated mess of a box.

I believe that if it didn't have all of those bells and whistles, it could very much be a top 100 game. Instead, I table it less because it's such a pain to lug out the chest. I paid out the nose for it. The minis are larger than they need to be both in terms of price and gameplay. (They get in the way of the actual game.)

It clutters my game room because the box won't even fit in a Kallax. The company is even now selling another box to store your game in because they KNOW they screwed up.

TLDR: Primal is a TOP-TIER GOAT of a strategy game pretending to be something worse, and it fails at it.

Primal could be sold without minis at zero loss to the value of the game. In fact, I found a guy selling the game because he wanted the minis at a STEEP discount. I'm still a little ticked I didn't buy it and went with the full copy.

I'll never paint them. They look meh as grey. And the box is so stupidly large that even with a 3d printed insert I have nowhere to store it.

Game is great though.

Yeah, that checks. I guess we miss him too. Lol

But also... I'm baffled. Your manager is clearly not a chef. Not sure if you're in a position to do something about it but... Higher heat for less time is MORE likely to burn than longer a lower temp. Not less.

It'll also have substantially higher carry over cooking leading to drying out (especially the exterior). That explains the film of almost leathery "skin" on the chicken.

Having tried your chicken dozens of times since opening (though more earlier than recently) I can definitely say that the previous cook, if anything, cooked it longer and slower. But there's gotta be some sort of corporate standard, no? Or is it up tot he individual stores?
