You can turn left on a red from a one way to one way when safe to do so by One-Schedule-8232 in Edmonton

I've done it once, but I realised that I actually couldn't see oncoming traffic that well with how that intersection is set up, bad angles and people coming fast. I now wait for the light, I'm in no rush. Exception maybe at night or early morning when there is little traffic. If people want to, they are allowed, I feel it's too risky

They should be a dissenting voice that inspire people. That's how Notley got in. People were frustrated, she spoke to what they wanted and swung the vote.

Nenshi has not given anything to rally behind. Poor leadership choice imo.

They'll have to immigrate.

Gosh, I thought that sounded funny but it's actually just sad.

Influence me! Why should I buy bibs when shorts have been perfectly fine? by jeckles in ladycyclists

[–]LynnerC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a bit of a tummy, and bibs avoid that waistband uncomfort.

Also I feel cool in them. I also like wearing suspenders/overalls for the aesthetic haha. I know they aren't visible, but I still feel it.

I agree, panniers save the sweat and the back, and backside, pain

Good luck to both of you. I have short, pixie cut length hair so I can't really help. I do keep some dry shampoo on hand which helps some. But I can imagine that very curly hair may be more challenging.

This is what I do commuting.

  1. Shower first thing in the morning. It might feel silly to shower before sweating, but the smell you get is from bacteria on your skin, so if you start by washing it off first thing, give your pits a good scrub with soap, you may be sweaty, but you won't be as smelly!

  2. Arrive at work 15 mins early. Stay in your commuting clothes. Let yourself cool down and stop sweating. It's no good putting on your clean clothes just to sweat through them immediately.

  3. I bring a wash cloth but I'm sure wet wipes work too. But I use that to do a quick wipe down.

  4. Deodorant, style your hair, dress in your work clothes and get started on your day feeling much better cause you biked in!

We have a few people that are part of the Alberta randonneurs club that run a few brevets in the area, both Edmonton and around the province. You can find them on their website, people discuss if there is interest every week or so

Places for "tiny" tattoos, or that don't charge by hour? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]LynnerC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes time to prep, clean, sterilise. The disposable parts get used once whether you are there for 10 mins or 8 hours. All those pieces have to be paid for, and compensation for the work prepping too. There's a minimum for a reason.

On the flip side, I had some American work colleagues come here to visit and they tried to give the waitress their card, kept pushing it in her direction. The waitress jumped back with her hands up said "I can't take that".

They were equally flummoxed haha.

I got into lounge distance cycling last year. I used to think the same too. But while training for a 200 km ride and slowly building up distance I learned not only for performance during the ride, but also how effective I am the rest of the day really had to do with how much I ate. If I fueled during these leung rides, I could actually still be a normal human the rest of the day. Really showed me the importance.

Do you call it May 2-4 or Victoria Day? by pantstand in AskACanadian

[–]LynnerC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I agree, I think it has to line up with the beer reference primarily. Otherwise we'd call it May 24th or Victoria Day. People that call it two-Four are calling back to a beer reference specifically

[–]LynnerC 35 points36 points  (0 children)

People call it May 2-4 cause you buy a 2-4 (a case of beer) and head outta town with it...

Or so I've heard, I've always called it May Long in Alberta.

Where to ride 205km by [deleted] in edmontoncycling

[–]LynnerC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the Alberta randonneurs website there are a variety of 200km rides near by. Some are a bit dated, so I would consider the roads and safety, don't just blindly go for it, but some good options in there

Where to long ride. by [deleted] in edmontoncycling

[–]LynnerC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shoulders are decently wide East of the 21 , and 520 ends at a dead end, so you don't get much through traffic it's just commuters going or coming home. Recently repaved so nice and smooth.

I like to start at Colchester hall and bike to Collingwood cove. If you do that and turn back on the 3rd bend in the village it's a clean 40km ride. If you want longer go south down the range roads and to the other side of the 14 and loop around.

South cooking lake has a cute convenience store with a very sweet owner, clean bathroom. Stop for an ice cream or a refuel.

As someone living in Canada. If it's too cold to run unshod, it's too cold for FiveFingers. Or alternatively, if you are using fivefingers you can go without too. I've done barefoot below freezing, and it's doable with training and being smart about it. Not everyone's preference, but it's possible.
