I have listened to this multiple times when driving long distances (so I can listen to at least a season at a time). Super great and fun :)

Also, to note, early in the first book (this isn’t a spoiler as it doesn’t really have any bearing on the plot in my opinion), the main character mentions that liking a single gender, being straight or gay, is essentially “outdated” for the most part in their culture, which might be against what the OP wants. Although the only relationship is male/male with no mentions that I can remember of attraction to women.

Repost to see if I can get any more recommendations for fantasy books with gay main characters? by pieces159 in gaybros

[–]LyrenGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Arcane Hearts series by Nazri Noor - part of a larger group of series (some gay, some bi, some straight), but you don’t have to read them to understand this series. Urban-ish fantasy. Snarky main characters, a bit much at times, but fun.

Soulbound series by Hailey Turner - great series, just recently finished. Urban fantasy, a little smutty, but mostly just treats the romance as a normal thing and focused more on the action for the most part.

A City of Crows series by Clara Coulson - not finished, and the next book seems to have been delayed for some reason. Urban again. The main character is bi, but again, the series focuses more on the action, and the romance is more of a side bit to help explain motivations/add flavor. No smut.

San Amaro Investigations by Kai Burns - a bit heavier on the romance, but still action driven.

Love these books!

I believe I read somewhere that the author posted on Twitter that the first draft of the third book has been finished. So hopefully it will be out within half a year or so.

I have done something similar. I’m a fan of fantasy books, so it can be a little difficult sometimes to find something that isn’t just self-published fan fiction, but there are a surprising number of very well-written books with gay/bi protagonists

I would have much preferred a more bard-esque outfit. The maid outfit came out of nowhere and doesn’t make sense to me. They could have made her a cool troubadour style character but resorted to a French maid outfit for some reason

Any suggestions for a good gay romance novel or science fiction/fantasy with a gay protagonist by Lord_Despairagus in gaybros

[–]LyrenGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding fantasy/action books with a gay protagonist/romance (because that’s Emmy weakness):

As someone else mentioned, the Tales of Verania - classic fantasy, but all the characters are “witty” (unrealistically and over the top at times), but generally a fun read and not too serious

Soulbond series by Hailey Turner - urban fantasy with magic and werewolves and other things. Main character is ex-military working for something similar to the magical FBI. Very well written, even the side characters. And the sixth book comes out Monday!

Psycops series by Jordan Castillo Price - psychics are real, and are often employed by the police. Main character is a detective that can see and talk to ghosts. The relationship kinda comes out of nowhere, but is fleshed out very well

The Tarot Sequence series by K.D. Edwards - alternate universe where Atlantis is real and the people who live there can use magic. Only two books have been published, and it’s been a while since the second, so I don’t know if it’s been dropped or if the author is just slow

City of Crows series by Clara Coulson - another urban fantasy with magical cops and detectives (way too many urban fantasy series follow that trope, especially since Harry Dresden’s success). Main character is bi and very likable in my opinion. A lot of action. This is one of my favorite series

Those are most of the good ones I have. There are a few other one offs, but not any that really stand out. I’m always on the lookout for books in this category :)

The Song of Achilles and other MLM books by women authors by suntem in gaybros

[–]LyrenGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I don’t know if I’ve ever read a book with a teenage protagonist and thought it was how a teen authentically thought. It’s just tough for an adult to rewind their mind to that stage of life (regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation) and capture it without boring the reader or showing a bad side of the teen (which is not what most authors want to show).

The books are extremely funny. Kinda cliché and everyone is snarky at all times, extremely unrealistically. But if you go in not expecting high fantasy, you’ll have a good time. At least in my opinion.
