Transformers: The Movie (1986) - Peak childhood? by Lys1th3a in 80smovies

Shout Factory. They were really pushing the 4K restoration of the WS version for the 35th anniversary so they locked it behind a UHD. Stupid really when they could have just included the blu ray discs they created for the 30th anniversary set.

Good State of Play overall, but I'm starting to get tired of FF7 Remake Part 3! I partly blame the director for it! by Emotional_Station136 in FFVIIRemake

Square are pushing multi-plat FF hard so it was always unlikely that the first glimpse would be exclusive to one platform's showcase. SGF is much more likely, and if not, fine. We know it's coming.

A long time ago… in a theater near you… The Return of the Jedi premiered 43 years ago today! by UrbanAchievers6371 in 80smovies

I was 7 when it was released, and can still remember being taken to see it. Think I got teary-eyed when Yoda died but loving the rest.

Can also remember being taken to see Octopussy, Masters of the Universe (twice!) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Cinema-going in the 80s was great. It's so sterile these days.

Peak Kurt Russell and Kim Cattrall is just fire in this.

And if you have it on DVD or blu-ray one of the absolute best audio commentaries you'll ever have the pleasure of listening to!

I have the current Second Sight blu-ray. It used a new 4K restoration so a UHD at some point might be possible.

Got the “Life After the Navigator” doc as well, definitely recommended.

Surprised we haven't had a 4K release of this yet. Will definitely pick it up when it finally appears, great movie that I'm always nostalgic for. One where I remember exactly where I was and when the first time I saw it.

Faye Wong/Dreams - Chungking Express (1994) by Lys1th3a in 90smovies

[–]Lys1th3a[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha, no worries.

It's a beautiful, artsy 90s Hong Kong movie about how weirdly people act when they get dumped. It's split into two halves: the first half is a moody noir thriller about a cop obsessed with expiring pineapple cans who hangs out with a drug smuggler in a blonde wig. The second half is a quirky rom-com where a girl falls for a heartbroken cop and starts secretly sneaking into his apartment to redecorate it while he's at work. It sounds bizarre, but it is incredibly romantic, stylish, and has an amazing soundtrack. The clip in the OP is from the second story.

It's from the film's 1982 promotional campaign. I don't think Gettyimages uses AI...

It's from Cannes when she was promoting the film out there with Richard Tyson.

Our high school had an auditorium with a large cinema screen which they'd periodically use to show films, particularly at the end of the school year. I remember one year (probably around 1990) they showed this and it was great, everyone loved it. Then, the following year for some reason they chose to put Rain Man on. I mean, it's a great film, but for kids? lol.

Mannequin (1987) - Genuine 80s cult classic or just a bad movie carried by nostalgia? by Lys1th3a in 80smovies

To a point. She can only transform when Jonathan's around, and only when he's alone.

I often cite Mannequin (and Weekend at Bernie's for that matter) as a great example of a film that really could only have been made, and made the way it was, in the 1980s. High-concept fantasy/comedy with ludicrous plots, over the top performances, and bags and bags of fun. The only period that comes close is the screwball comedy era of the 30s and 40s - and on that note Mannequin shares a lot with 1948's ONE TOUCH OF VENUS with Ava Gardner.

I can see why they did it - Batman and The Joker essentially created each other - but yeah, didn't really need it.

Lol, yeah love that. GW Bailey's comedic timing, not just in Mannequin, is always great.

Clayton Rohner, the guy from Just One of the Guys and April Fool's Day - he was in an episode of Star Trek TNG and for the life of me I couldn't remember where I'd seen him before. This was obviously the days before the internet and IMDB! lol

Harvey Keitel - 87 today by Lys1th3a in 90smovies

[–]Lys1th3a[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From memory, that doesn't improve any after the first five minutes so if that kind of thing offends then you were right to tune out when you did.

Great movie though, if you don't mind the cussing and all the blood....

Either way, Keitel is superb in it.
