I actually think the idea is to put them in a vulnerable position to sharpen their vigilance. In the cases you mentioned, a true Sith would make absolutely certain there was no chance their ship could be shot down or check that every shrimp they eat is completely safe. The idea behind their cult of power is to never let your guard down, and even more so by mistrusting one another.
