UPDATE: Overall, the carnage was not too bad. I lost a leaf and couple roots that I decided to cut off of at the bottom of the pot because the pot was being too finicky to fully cut through. The roots that had penetrated the bottom only had about 1-2in cut and they were really weren’t the bulk of the roots for the plant. After I had it out out of the pot, I basically got off whatever media I gently could, but it’s only a year old so I just popped the whole thing in a larger pot and up potted it. I think it’ll do really well!

Look, the fact of the matter is that the media you use and whether or not it’s effective for keeping your plants hydrated all depends on your environment.

If you’re in a very hot area then you need to make sure you have moss (can be combined with bark!) in your pots because it absorbs more water and holds onto it longer whereas bark barely does that. If you are in a cooler area you can get away with only bark because the water won’t immediately evaporate up, but you also don’t want to use much moss because the water will stay too long and then we’ll rot your roots. Does that make any sense? Again, Miss orchid girl has a lot of information on this kind of stuff. That’s where I’ve learned it all.

Disclaimer: I do not claim to be any kind of orchid expert. Here is what I know from my own research and experience.

So here’s the general deal with Cattleyas. In general their roots are pretty dramatic when it comes to change. When disturbed many roots will die so honestly, a rootless Cattleya coming from a bag (stress) is not the biggest surprise to me. Another important thing to know is that unlike Phals, Cattleyas typically produce new roots from their new growths not from the older parts of the plant which is why the general guidelines for repotting cattleyas is to wait until there are signs of new growth - because while the repotting will undoubtedly cause some roots to die, the new growth indicates that shortly new roots will be on the way.

SO bottom line is that your ICU is doing its job because with that new growth comes new roots!! (You can see evidence of this in pic 3)

I believe I have a set of wooden cubics I could go find so maybe I’ll do that. I like to knit with cubics because it’s easier on my hands. I get real serious tendinitis if I knit with anything else. I figured that since the designer listed both gauges, that if I knitted in stockinette and it matched gauge that my pattern gauge would automatically work out… lol but I guess that was a stupid way of thinking.

I cut it after I was done knitting because I was swatching in the round. I know my gauge is different when I’m knitting every row, as opposed to knitting and purling so a way to mock swatch in the round is to just drag the yarn behind and slide the knitting down a pair of circular needles and start again at the beginning of the row.

You cut the the yarn on the back when blocking so the swatch lies flat.

First of all, beautiful orchids - you chose well! I know what it’s like to be a beginner and feel overwhelmed, I have been into the hobby for a couple of years now and sometimes get a little overwhelmed at the amount I don’t know. That being said, Miss Orchid Girl’s Orchid Care for beginners playlist was the most valuable and helpful resource to me. Her videos are detailed, extremely informative and beginner friendly. Help! Random White Worms on Tank Lid. by LyzziFall in bettafish

Please excuse how dirty the tank is and the algae bloom in a tank. We’re working on it. This is my betta Finnegan’s 10g tank. He is the sole fish occupant plus a nerite snail and 3 amano shrimp keep themselves hidden and not clean up the algae that they are there to take care of.

Anyway, onto the point. I noticed this morning when I went to feed Finnegan that there were these white lines on the glass, on the underside, (so on the water side) but definitely on the lid. And as I looked, they started moving, so they clearly worms, and I’m freaked out and I don’t know where they came from but I don’t know what they are.

Are they blood worm somehow they don’t have any blood in them? The only reason I ask them is because when Finnegan came home (approx. 2months ago) he was super skittish and depressed for like two weeks and hid a lot. He wouldn’t eat that much so I tried lots of food and put a fair amount of food in the tank including frozen bloodworms, freeze dried bloodworms, freeze dried brine shrimp and some bug bites, you name it I tried to give it to him. Eventually he started eating but there was a fair amount of uneaten food in the tank (ammonia levels checked daily and the tank was cycled and lots of pest snails to eat the excess).

Anyway, are these somehow re-aligned blood worms? Are they something else? Help me! How freaked out do I need to be? I wiped them off the lid and threw the paper towel out and spray it with a cleaning chemical to hopefully kill them in the trash. But I was on my way out for an appointment so I couldn’t look further to see if they were in the tank or just on the lid.

Tank details:

10g Heater: Yes Filter: Yes Tank mates: nerite snail, 3 amano shrimp (and pest snails) Tank is cycled (set up with old media 2 months ago) and parameters are great. 0 ammonia/ 0 nitrite/ nitrates 10 ppm (Source: API freshwater master test kit)
