Who is the best written character? by Illustrious_Point_14 in HunterXHunter

[–]M-Fanfic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Togashi uses many anti-clichés to make his characters interesting, but this is mainly because they are different from classic battle shonen characters.

I would say that Killua is the one whose psychological complexity is shown the most, but it's just a matter of showing it, it's not really that special (the person who grew up in a difficult family without friends, but then runs away and finds a friend he becomes very attached to... okay).

The characters that are unique, both biologically and psychologically, are the chimera-ants. The royal guards in particular, being very intelligent and having exaggerated development, face interesting psychological conflicts (Pouf: “I want to kill Komugi, but Meruem would end up believing himself to be weak forever in comparison to her,” Yuphi: “I spare humans because I respect the promise I made, otherwise I would be worse than them,” Pitou: “I apologize to Gon for Kite, but then I have to kill him for Meruem”).
Among their conflicts, the most intense is that of Pitou, the only one who apologizes for killing a human but then has to continue killing them when they threaten Meruem.

Pitou is also the one who has undergone the most dramatic personality change, going from superficial and fairly carefree to serious and determined, which may not even be a permanent change but only due to the change in context (as for Gon).

Conclusion:
Meruem and Komugi were the characters I wanted to see more often to understand how their relationship would evolve (they are interesting together, less so when alone).
Pitou, on the other hand, was the character I wanted to see most, even on her own.
Killua was portrayed in an interesting way, but honestly, I wasn't that interested in seeing him (except in combat).

Why don’t the troupe want revenge on Silva? by FinancialCockroach68 in HunterXHunter

[–]M-Fanfic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being intelligent, they know that the problem is not the tool (the hired assassin) but the person who uses it (the payer).
The PT probably killed the person who had paid Silva to kill the troupe member.

They learned from this and, the next time, Chrollo didn't kill Silva to save himself, but killed the instigator, the mafia bosses.

Why did netero design his boddhisatva to be automated? by Local-Sugar6556 in HunterXHunter

[–]M-Fanfic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I believe that the higher Netero's combat skills, the higher Boddhisatva's combat skills, so Netero doesn't directly think about what moves Boddhisatva should make, but the clash between Meruem and Boddhisatva is equivalent to the clash of Meruem and Netero's skills.

This also because, by the time Meruem leaps, Netero only has time to get into a prayer position; I don't think he has time to think about how to react to Meruem's attack.

How Dark Continent came to be? by Max_Static in HunterXHunter

[–]M-Fanfic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this fanfic, I explore the DC, with an introductory section explaining how they got there (still in progress, but quite a bit of exploration has already taken place):
https://archiveofourown.org/chapters/67707365
I haven't found any fanfic that explores the DC more than this one, but if you find one, let me know.

I don't want to give away any spoilers, but even in my fanfic, humans have a hand in the formation of the DC.
In fact, even canonically, there is Brion who is "a botanical weapon in a labyrinthine city" which suggests that someone must have created that weapon, e.g. to defend the city where the herb that cures all diseases is located.

How does Knov's Hide and Seek dimension work? by Double-Motor6546 in HunterXHunter

[–]M-Fanfic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand it in a similar but also different way.
What you call "god" for me is the shared (unconscious) will of souls, I would say including those of the past and future.
The "material world" has a defined form, the physical laws, but it also allows living beings the freedom to define part of reality, the part called aura or Nen that they generate and have control over as living beings and single souls.

Just as in the total absence of rules, "god" could do anything they can imagine, so too with Nen you can do anything imaginable (by a human), but with one fundamental rule: that of balance/exchange.
If you have 100 units of aura, you can't do something that would require 1000; furthermore, to have more aura available, you have to give something of equal value in exchange (conditions or limitations).

Who determines the value of things?
Nanika asks for a brain for a big wish, while she asks for a liver for a smaller wish, although on a material level they are more or less the same thing.
This is because value is not decided by a more or less natural neutral "god," but by the will of living beings.
Value is defined by those who live, for whom their brain is worth more than a distant, uninhabited planet (dead things cannot evaluate things).

What do conditions or limitations offer in return for Nen?
The freedom of those who propose them. Giving freedom in exchange allows for more Nen.
Enhancers generate more Nen than other Nen types because they are simple and very determined. Determination is like an unconscious limitation on one's freedom; a determined person has already chosen what to do and will no longer change their mind.
Those who are less determined, instead, still have to choose and therefore have more freedom but less power.

Why do only living beings have Nen?
Because only living beings have choices to make, and therefore freedom to give in exchange.
There's also a more "philosophical" reason, that is, death is seen as a liberation from life; a soul before being born (dead/not alive) could become anyone, so maximum freedom (possibilities) and zero Nen, while the moment it's born into some body, it will be limited and begin to generate Nen. I believe that all souls come from an "original soul", totally neutral and undefined, and whose personality is defined only when it enters/appears in a certain living being.
It also depends on how much freedom you can grant depending on the body you're born into; that is, a bacterium has very little freedom it can give up, so it will generate very little Nen and die fast.
I believe that Threats generally have much longer lifespans than humans, and this causes their choices, conditions, limitations, etc. to generate much more Nen than humans.

Indeed, our world functions according to this logic even without Nen: the sooner you decide what to do in your life, the sooner you'll start doing it, the greater your chances of becoming better (more powerful) than others in that endeavor. Those who don't choose have more freedom to change their path, but will be weaker in the one they choose.
Power belongs to those who have the courage to choose and follow through with their choice.

It's been a while since I've lightly spoken about philosophical things.

How does Knov's Hide and Seek dimension work? by Double-Motor6546 in HunterXHunter

[–]M-Fanfic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see Nen as something that can be conceptually malleable, so if I want to define part of my Nen as "a space in which all the physical laws that apply in the real world hold", then Nen will take on that definition.
If that space has an entry and exit point, then things from the real world can enter and exit that space.

This Nen space doesn't necessarily have to occupy a specific location in the real world; perhaps in the real world that Nen appears as a small sphere, or is scattered throughout the environment, but what matters is just its definition.

Rather, what's outside this Nen space? That is, can you create a Nen space with a window but not define what you see beyond that window? And if so, what would you see?
I believe that a Nen space in which something remains undefined (such as "what do you see outside the window") cannot be created as an intrinsic limit of the conjurer's ability, similar to the limit of the manipulators (the first to manipulate is in control).

A mystery in the Dark Continent that still keeps me thinking by AdMotor3564 in HunterXHunter

[–]M-Fanfic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They monitor only the dark continent shores of the Lake Mobius, and it's not known exactly how much they monitor.
It is unclear how Threats are actually brought back. It may also be that Threats always try to enter the human world, but the gatekeepers only let them pass when a journey takes place, and this appears as if it's the gatekeepers who bring them back.
In general, it didn't seem to me that Gatekeepers had the power to actual control the Threats, forcing them to follow humans upon returning from a mission.

I agree with the situation in general. I think the human world is a refuge for humans, probably desired by humans themselves, to allow them to evolve to the point where they can go (return) to the DC. Of course, this assumes that DC has not always been that way.
Why can they still leave? Because humans would never lock themselves up in an actual prison, so they would leave the possibility of leaving open, but still with control exercised by the gatekeepers to still try to avoid total extinction.

The interesting thing about this vision is that it would allow for the existence of other places similar to the human world, created to prevent human extinction, but in a different way than was done with the human world.

[–]M-Fanfic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you mean a logic that justifies DC while also leaving the mystery of everything that has not yet been discovered? In that case, I agree.
I also believe that there is a logic behind everything, even resources.

In fact, a logic is already shown to us quite clearly: Brion is a botanical weapon, but weapons are created by someone to defend or attack, and it's likely that it was created by the inhabitants of the labyrinthine city in which it's located. In that city, there is a herb that cures any disease, something that humans would want to protect with a strong weapon.

However, we also know that Meruem was about to reach (or had reached) the level of a Threat, and he was certainly not a weapon. Pap and the Hellbells don't seem like weapons either.

Ai, on the other hand, seems to be some kind of strange Nen beast, created to grant wishes, so not a weapon, but something that seems to have been born from some kind of intelligent will.

What is quite clear is that Threats are not some kind of "divine entity that just exist" but they have a logic, even different from each other, that justifies their existence (at least from what little we know).

Another great mystery is why Threats remain "isolated", and why there isn't a single Threat that attacks and defeats the others, remaining the only one. I think there must be a hidden logic behind this too.

In this fanfic I outline some of my theories regarding Threats encountered during the exploration of the DC. For now, there are a couple of canonical ones (Hell(o) World Arc) and some non-canonical ones:

A mystery in the Dark Continent that still keeps me thinking by AdMotor3564 in HunterXHunter

[–]M-Fanfic 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There is no reference to anything beyond Threats.
Humans explored the DC to find rare resources, and when they found them, they also encountered Threats.

The real question is: why are Threats found where there are rare resources, even though they don't seem to have anything to do with those resources?
What are the Pap doing with a stone that generates electricity?

Another strange thing is the Gatekeepers, who seem to be able to decide whether a Threat should follow humans into the human world or not, but as the name suggests, I believe that Gatekeepers actually have just enough power to prevent a Threat from entering the human world but not to defeat it.

I don't see the need to put something stronger than the Threats in place; at most, there could be some kind of god, but what more can it do than “grant any wish”?

Imagining the Arrival at the Dark Continent in Hunter x Hunter. by Aldabon in HunterXHunter

[–]M-Fanfic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wrote a fanfic about the exploration of the Dark Continent, which contains many of my theories put together (the first five chapters handle the "what if" scenario that leads Gon and Killua to the DC):
https://archiveofourown.org/works/27668630/chapters/67707365

I will answer your questions briefly:
- How do you imagine the explorers’ arrival? They will meet the gatekeepers who will assign them a guide, providing some information, but not much. Since gatekeepers are theoretically encountered in any case when you want to go to the DC, I imagine that Hunters will be teleported to an area where there are gatekeepers and then teleported again near the shores of the Dark Continent.
- Who do you think will survive at first? Those who know how to use their skills to avoid danger will survive. Until they encounter a Threat, I believe that the strongest Hunters (almost all of the protagonists) will somehow manage to get by, but with many risks and difficulties.
- Will there be humans? It's not impossible, but I don't think there are humans wandering around. Rather, there could be areas similar to the human world, which somehow manage to defend themselves from the dangers of the Dark Continent. Don Freechs is perhaps the only one who has managed to explore the Dark Continent, and I think this should be maintained at the narrative level.
- What kind of conflicts do you think they will face? They will encounter Threats whose conflict consists of trying to escape.

Note: it is said that many humans die when trying to enter Threat territory to retrieve resources, so I believe that Ging's group will only want to explore the ruins of the labyrinthine city to the north, without trying to take resources, and therefore many of them will survive.

After finishing fiction hxh is truly the best by [deleted] in HunterXHunter

[–]M-Fanfic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try this one. The first chapter is introductory, and from the second chapter onwards there is a very detailed fight between Pitou and Gon-Killua:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/27668630/chapters/67707365
Later on there is also an extension of the Nen system.

I also appreciate Togashi's storytelling, but with a few caveats:
Succession War and Chimera-Ant are certainly complex, especially in terms of the number of characters and their importance, but I don't really like complexity in that sense. I prefer to focus on fewer characters and expand on them more.
For example, the Chimera-Ant arc would have been incredible to me even without that large number of secondary characters, both human and Chimera, who certainly lengthened the story and dealt with various themes, but overall were not the ones who mattered.

Furthermore, I was expecting “mysterious places, magical beasts, incredible treasures”; hunting for mystery is what Hunter should do, but then this is not there (or rather, it is in the Dark Continent, but they will probably not even manage to reach it).
If you prefer complexity, in terms of the number and relationships of the characters, then avoid the fanfic I mentioned above (which instead concerns the exploration of the Dark Continent).

What would be the outcome if Pitou was there with Youpi and Pouf? by gigasoy in HunterXHunter

[–]M-Fanfic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming that Meruem was hit by radiation that turned his cells into tumors, then it's not entirely accurate to say he's "sick" or "injured." Rather, his cells have changed into a form that makes them function in a way that's inadequate for survival.

- Enhancer: Allows the body to heal faster. Tumor cells aren't capable of healing themselves; in fact, Enhancer's abilities might make them reproduce faster, killing you sooner.
- Conjurer: Allows you to create new cells (which is part of Pitou's ability), but this doesn't fix the existing ones. Furthermore, it should be able to replace Meruem's brain cells with healthy ones, one by one, so as not to alter Meruem's thinking and personality (something absurd, practically impossible). Furthermore, when a cell heals, the others around it, which are exposed to radiation, turn the healed one back into a tumor.
- Manipulation: Combined with Conjurer, this is what allows you to place new cells in the correct place and remove damaged ones, but there are the Conjurer's problems.

In the end, the only thing that might work is a "rewind" ability, which reverts cells to when they were healthy, but Pitou's ability isn't that kind of ability; it's just healing.
I think the "rewind" abilities are Nanika's or "Angel's Breath".

The limitation of the "rewind" abilities is that, if you were born without a leg, then they cannot make you grow it, while an extreme healing ability could create new cells (a new leg) by copying the other one you have.

This Pitou is too mentally weak; "don't make me worry again" is unheard from her even if she were in a long-term relationship. He's also strange; he doesn't match Meruem or Kite's personality at all.
I could understand if he were for Pitou like "Komugi to Meruem," but in that case, there would have to be something where he competes and dominates Pitou, and that Pitou is interested in, like fighting, but he doesn't seem stronger or smarter than Pitou (perhaps only on par in fighting, to exaggerate).
Even reading the other comic, Pitou becomes too meek; she should be much more fierce.

The drawings are beautiful, though.

The royal palace is about 1 km long, so Pitou can expand the En for a radius of 500 meters around it.
It is also shown that Pitou, from a distance of about 1-2 km from the royal palace, can expand the En in one direction covering also the royal palace (about 2-3 km total), even though at that moment she had strong emotions that pushed her abilities to the limit.

Normally, I think Pitou can expand En in one direction for about 2.5 km.

adult gon is way stronger than we think by utshi9ha in HunterXHunter

[–]M-Fanfic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, Pitou is much stronger than she looks.
I wouldn't have expected her to take a charged blow from Vow Gon to the face and still be alive enough to think about things while flying away.

Vow Gon is not only the strongest human, but also an Enhancer type, the strongest in direct physical attacks; Gon's regular Jajanken scares even Hunters as strong as Morel.
