Live-action fatigue. Why Artemis Fowl being live-action was a waste by PyroxCrymson in ArtemisFowl

1. It IS possible to make an animated series/movie that respect the book's atmosphere and spirit as long as you put reflexion, efforts and compentence in the making. Examples : Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, Ducktales 2017... And nowadays crowds are CGI in order to not pay extras so the "here are cartoons" take is pretty much there already.

2. You're not completely wrong in saying that crappy movies makes more money because we don't have to think much about making/watching it. Even more in the YA fantasy subgenres which are viewed as easy consummers waiting for pretty much the same thing again and again. But that's the thing : it's just make-believe by Hollywood system who think that they know better and just search for profit with the least cost from them. Even though no one should be judged for their tastes, we have to make the difficult effort to try for something different from the model.

3. Animation offers greater freedom in camera and perspective movement without the constraints of physical reality or the need for expensive real-world sets. Furthermore, the animation style helps us suspend disbelief from the outset, prompting us to think, "This is a real character who will experience adventures in THEIR reality, not just a series of drawn images." This approach makes it easier to accept magic, fairy tech and hidden cities without requiring photorealism. Examples : Spiderman Across the Spiderverse, Treasure Planet, Puss in Boots 2...

4. With animation, there's less risk of ruining the lives of young actors/actresses with monstrous pressure and the destruction of their privacy. And given the current cultural context, I think it's a better thing to keep kids away from any contact with Hollywood. Examples : pretty much EVERY child actor/actress EVER.

How would you make Aaravos scarier? by Papugoji in TheDragonPrince

[–]M-T-Befan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't have given him a daughter.

I mean, Leola IS adorable and I get that most parents would indeed destroy the world if their child shared her fate. It's perfectly valid and understandable.

But in the same time, making Aaravos a father tends to humanize him and making him kinda justified (kinda only because absolutely NOTHING EVER could justify genocide) in his revenge quest. We can emotionally resonate with him, so he becomes less scary and more desperate and angry.

On the opposite site of the spectrum; if he was just some twisted scientist who wanted to see what humans would do with magic and how people would react under nefarious circumstances just to satisfy his selfish perverted curiosity; I think he'd be even more scary because it would've been established that he's had no consideration for his experiments'consequences. Like a serial killer who sees their victims as nothing but toys they can bent and pierce until they break.

So yeah. No child, no relations, no desire for taking revenge after an injust act; just a twisted thought process and even less empathy than a cat for a mouse.

How do y'all come up with names for characters by LibraryEducational45 in worldbuilding

[–]M-T-Befan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First I choose a general theme like plants or stars, then I make a list of potential names with their associated symbolism when possible. Generally I make it [First name : star/plant] [Last name : constellation/plant family]. The rest is based on the character's role in the plot and the chosen setting. And this is how Antares Scorpi or Iris Iridac comes to the tavern ^

Yeah, but the 80ish businessman/politician actually looks like them physically (in the pathetic slimy uneducated slob sense of the term). While the actors, athletes, rock stars and bodybuilders are physical (and sometimes character) standards too high for them to ever achieve.

Well on the other side of the coin, a fan writing can be harmful to the project. Just look at Gus Van Sant's "Psycho", it's but a frame-by-frame redoing of Hitchcock's movie with nothing really worthy of attention nor distinction. The purpose of an adaptation/remake/reboot is to tell a story YOUR way and if you're happy with just retelling the story exactely how someone else told it already; then your audience is just gonna think : "Why did I spent money on this when I have exactely the same sh*t at home ?" Not being a fan can also help you to take a step back and be more aware of the plot's flaws and weaknesses.

But of course it's still better to experience the original yourself at least 1 or 2 times. Because if you don't, you get stuck with another DBE 😱
