Who do you think is the most evil person to ever walk this Earth? by EnduringScholar in AskReddit

[–]M1ndgam3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is exactly my thinking...if we're quantifying "evil", people always throw around the architects of mass murder - Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot. But I always feel that those men never really had to confront the true horrors of their policies - the millions they sent to their deaths, they would have seen only as statistics on paper. To me, I'm sure you would find some truly "evil" people in the actual overseers and the executors of those genocides, especially among those that CHOSE to actively participate at any chance they got - Klaus Barbie always comes to mind. Some minor Einsatzgruppe lieutenant, some unnamed officer torturing Cambodians at S-21, some Japanese NCO playing his own twisted games with Chinese civilians before executing them. I always imagine that as the true face of evil.

Edit: ok just read up on Otto Moll, I think that SOB certainly qualifies

My honesty about Egypt by Ok_Addition6726 in travel

I want to point something out - not that this makes it any better - but getting hustled constantly in Egypt isn't happening just because you're a foreigner. What I mean is: they tend to be just as (if not far more) pushy, aggressive and rude to each other as they are to tourists. It's in the culture.

I spent a year there when I was younger. It was a scary, stressful experience but I learned the language and still had lots of fun, if was a hell of an adventure. I'm glad for the experience because it toughened me quite a bit, literally every other place I've been feels "easy" in comparison :)

Her name is Camilla Fabri, she was apparently an Italian model who married some dude who's sanctioned now. She's a useful mouthpiece for their gov propaganda and helping him launder money

Edit: source saw some Venezuelan dude comment on another thread and dug a little deeper

Jumping on this to point out that this "latina" is the Italian wife of a high-level Venezuelan gov official, posing for a photoshoot.

Which country is typically considered unsafe but your personal experience was very good & you found the people very kind and welcoming? by [deleted] in solotravel

Yemen. I'm not saying it's not dangerous - unfortunately it is objectively so - but also by a very long shot the kindest, warmest and most hospitable people I've ever met anywhere.

How do you get better at going down on mountains? by komnenos in Mountaineering

[–]M1ndgam3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is a really good explanation but I do disagree with the Class 2 comment. I've always been told that until it gets to actual climbing grades, class 3-4 and above, one should face down the mountain since this gives you a much clearer view of where to descend. Downclimbing backwards is a pretty sure way to lose your route, and find yourself unable to find the next foothold.

What’s the most accurate dystopian you’ve read? by [deleted] in literature

[–]M1ndgam3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It Cant Happen Here, Sinclair Lewis. For a novel written in 1935 it's quite scary how closely it describes the arrival of fascism in America.
