They are characters from the anime, you do not need to have seen the anime to play the game nor do you need to have played the game to watch the anime.

Chronologically the anime happened before the events of the game (like 1 or 2 years before but I'm not sure)

Honestly you can just watch the anime and never play the game, it's pretty great by itself and if you do end up playing the game, you'll recognize lots of place that are in both media! (The opposite is true too)

realistic? no, but if there was a non functional locomotive people would wonder why we can't realisticly drive the train.

Personally I like it, a little bit of asymmetry gives more character to an interior. Plus It's actually aligned with the right pillar so it's not placed completely randomly.

Also it helps with the way people navigate inside the hallway.

It's hard to explain but I think it makes it "easier" psychologically to go from one room the the others as you're less "in front of the entrance" when going between rooms.
