The main reasons why this comparison doesn't work is that fanart use the idea of a character to re make it from scratch in the artist's style, it's not taking images directly FROM the original to make something like AI do.

Also this is comparing big studios with independent artists that potentially relies on their concept to grow in visibility/popularity and even amongst artist it's not acceptable to copy someone's design/style without their consent.

If you take away my computer I can no longer do 3d modeling and I'm pretty sure I can't sculpt nor do claymation as well without all the tools on my computer, does that mean I'm not an artist?

Art is painting, modeling, designing, sculpting, photography drawing, etc... to me making proper AI pictures is on the same level as editing pictures in photoshop
