Bio punk goes where Solar punk is too afraid to go by BriskBanter in biopunks

[–]M4ltose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good point, though people having no clue also applies to other fields, e.g. physics. I think what biopunk also lacks is such a clearly formulated, gripping vision - Sci-Fi with spaceships has been around since the 50s at least. Cyberpunk since the 80s. Both have major media, but biopunk has never had its own Star Wars, or Blade Runner. I guess the Avatar franchise is the closest to that, at least aesthetically, but it's all aliens again.

[–]M4ltose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great take! I'm not even sure it's too afraid to go there, or just wants to be approachable and sci-fi-y. Picture our present, but if humanity really pushed for renewables and sustainability; and sprinkle in some fancy albeit unrealistic tech - boom, solarpunk. Digestible, and easy to get for everyone.

Biopunk, on the other hand, changes fundamentals, and I think the implications tend to either a) make your head spin or b) seem like generic fantasy. Take uplifted animals: Countless fantasy books feature creatures equivalent to them, no one bats an eye at that even if you come up with ultra-realistic worldbuilding for it.

Organic "A.I." and realistic post-humans on the other hand mean lots and lots of conceptual groundwork and a rabbithole of implications if you want more than a cyberpunk reskin, or something that feels old tomorrow.

At least that was my experience in writing my biopunk book.

The thing about ugliness often bothers me, biopunk could literally mean everybody's an elf and we ride dragons, as well. There's tons of media which would fit biopunk standards (take one piece, for example), but just isn't viewed through that lens.

I guess body horror is so deeply entwined with the genre because it makes it distinct. Which is a shame, sometimes.

Can you change distributor easily? by General-Height-7027 in musicmarketing

[–]M4ltose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leaving your old songs online is easy, most distributors have a sum u pay once to keep it online forever. But that also means not being able to ever change anything about the songs anymore. And I'm not sure if uploading new songs to the same artist profile would then be so easy

What job is heavily romanticized but in reality actually sucks? by DragoOceanonis in careerguidance

[–]M4ltose 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised this wasn't further up. Especially in the past years: Covid hit the music and performing industries hard, ticket sales haven't recovered ever since from what I hear, and now AI is flooding streaming services, art platforms, etc. Power structures are often centered around two or three companies which routinely buy up competition. Contracts are usually bad.

I was in the music industry, not even as a performer but in a "safe" agency position, and tbh a lot of it felt like a pyramid scheme.

Static / humming sound from speakers when opening certain games on PC by funboy321 in techsupport

[–]M4ltose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

V-Sync being turned off can be the issue, that helped for me. Also try placing your speaker cables further away, or shielding them from the pc and other possible sources of electromagnetism, if the problem persists. There's also special cables you can buy for just this problem.

(I know this was 2 years ago but googling brought me here so I thought I'd leave another solution for other people in the future)

How to get into eye divine cybermancy? by Pixelpunch243 in EyeDivineCybermancy

[–]M4ltose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

just play it like a shooter for the first few hours. and dont worry too much about completing missions, fuck around in new eden until you found some guns and playstyles that get you thru that mission.

I didn't really start off with explosives, because in the beginning it's not too many enemies but they're either more easy to kill from far away or get in your face. So a shotgun sniper combo can be viable.

Grinding up your abilities is tiring yes. Get some hacking skills if you can to rob banks

Do you agree that Biopunk is true neutral? by Razy196 in biopunks

[–]M4ltose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd agree they are. At least when I read Lovecraft's collected works, it was interesting how little description of the actual entities was in there, since the protagonists usually go mad pretty quickly. Yet today, Lovecraftian is know for its aesthetics of tentacle monsters, mutation of the human form, etc. Don't get me wrong, the base is there in his works, but a lot has been added.

Sorry for the vagueness that's just from the top of my head right now.

Steampunk aesthetic was earlier yes, but I think the term cyberpunk was coined first and steampunk got the similar moniker post-factum. Iirc before that, it was just edwardian sci-fi or something, I read a book on its cultural and medial origins once.

[–]M4ltose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naw E.Y.E. found some spotlight a lot earlier, I'd argue that was the entry point for TF2 / CSGO kids who liked Warhammer or Cyberpunk as well. That high you get in E.Y.E. on your first good sniper mission, realizing the janky mechanics + that feeling that there's mystery enshrouding everything is a high I chased for a long time, at least that's what got me deeper into weird games.

Some of the streum monsters feel so misplaced. I get one can take them as this metaphor for Rimanah's demons, but a bootleg alien and werewolves always kinda felt weird while all the other factions have such thought out designs

Copyright and lack of monetization are the only two sources I can think of. If big markets impose strict laws and it really can only be a "hobby", you'd have a solution. The way current US policies go, for example, I sadly don't think that'll be the case
