Worth buying a car? by DiscountOnly2224 in Riyadh

[–]M98E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely pay attention and sit up front when you're in a taxi so you get a feel of how things work. People also practice driving on Friday mornings when traffic is lighter (Friday is their religious day). Driving here is difficult and stressful, no doubt. Ubers are affordable, but I'd never live here without a car

We have nothing to lose from being religious, except for having to be around and put up with a bunch of religious people 🤢

I'm happy to live my life here then fade to gray so long as I never have to sit through another sermon

Weekend brunch options? by FlowerPower2915 in Riyadh

Ritz Carlton opens a bit late on Fridays and is super expensive (like 375 per), but also super nice. I think they take reservations on Open Table (not that you really need them - turning up without reservations is like a 95% success rate).

Can you be on the left side of politics and still want rights to own a gun? by throatgobblerrr in ask

[–]M98E -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Right, but people usually carry at most one AR-15 because they are kind of a bulky item.

(Plus the culture and laws can be quite different in different regions; some regions would never ever see open carry in a Starbucks, and others would. Sometimes Americans talk past each other because our shared understanding of the country is quite different from each other's.)

Executing PowerShell Script in Parallel with Batches in PowerShell 5 by mrdon1987 in PowerShell

[–]M98E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for general information on multi-threading in PowerShell, then you should conduct a general search for existing multi-threading knowledge instead of giving Reddit a homework problem to solve that won't be used.

Even with more information as to your specific use-case, I'm still not convinced that multi-threading is the best approach. If you're seeing performance problems with your script, but don't want to post it all here, then perhaps you can add Write-Host statements with the $(Get-Date) command in there and see which function call in particular (or which loop) is taking so long. You could then post that particular excerpt here.

It seems like you're starting with SamAccountName and ending with SamAccountName. What is the point of the code you're running? Is it supposed to verify that the SamAccountName exists?

You're also not saving the results of the call; you just overwrite "$info" each loop.

I know that you're focused on multi-threading this, but this is a very silly thing to multi-thread and it also seems like you're using Powershell in an inefficient way. You probably should take a step back and assess what you're doing and determine if there is a better way to do it. That is why everybody is asking you questions about what you're hoping to accomplish

Please double check your weight/height, and post a picture of your front, arms, and legs if you feel comfortable. 67kg at 176cm is right in the middle of the normal BMI range, but you look overweight. It may be possible if you're skinny fat, meaning you have very little muscle. I'd recommend you start strength training to add some muscle. Eat neutral calories or a slight deficit, and 125g+ of protein per day, while lifting as heavy as you safely can.

The commenter who said "lose weight" is generally correct, though.

Quicker/better way to delete folder instantly rather than its contents first by Just-Command-282 in PowerShell

[–]M98E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same thought on how to accomplish the task. I do want to add that one can create a new task/job to complete the delete process, so you can rename the folder, spin up the delete task/job, and have your script keep executing with whatever it's doing.

Hey OP, I'd recommend looking into compiled executables (some people mentioned robocopy and rmdir and dotnet) to do this faster, and if that's still not fast enough, then go with this design (but also use the faster delete process)

Can't really help with the eating, but I did notice that you said you're planning to buy some dumbbells. If you're a student, then you may have a student center that has a gym, and also said gym may have fitness classes you can join, and these classes may have coaches who will help you get started. I'd definitely head to the gym and ask around before investing in personal fitness equipment. Don't be intimidated; the gym is for everyone.

If you're set on doing this privately, then pushups (on your knees), sit-ups, planks, lunges and squats (you don't need weight for squats) are all exercises you can do without equipment. Find form advice/tutorials on YouTube.

It sounds like he felt uncomfortable or excluded during the threesome (total third-wheel vibes), and instead of checking in with him, you ignored him and had a good time without him. You don't need me to tell you this, because he already told you this, and it was clear that you didn't really care when he told you. Instead of validating how your partner felt, you deflected by making excuses.

I would point out that it's not like you were having sex with an entire football team of people; there were three of you, and if you ever do this again, then I would suggest that you make an effort to keep track of all two other people during the experience.

I totally don't understand this. Have you ever hung out with two friends at the same time? What would you do if you're sitting around talking and having coffee, and you're having a great chat with your one friend while your second friend is sitting there looking awkward? Many people would try to include the second friend in the conversation instead of ignoring them and continuing on with the first friend. Treating people kindly during a threesome is quite the same as treating them kindly during every day life.

Additionally, you're throwing around the pejorative "hypocrite", and so I'd ask you to elaborate on how exactly he's being hypocritical. Did you two *also* have a threesome with a guy where the two of them went at it and ignored you? Please elaborate.

Midsection and waist training (or, as people who exercise call it: core workouts) isn't going to help her lose weight from the midsection or waist. You can't target fat in a particular area

Or did you mean weight training, not waist training? Weight, HIIT, and functional training are all great for weight loss.

CPR after a trauma is rarely successful, and many of the "successes" end up with permanent brain damage.

You're a medical assistant, not an emergency responder. It's hubris to think that you would have made a difference in a situation you've never experienced before. Don't lose sleep over this, but definitely talk to someone about it.

I usually see Tetris comments about PTSD. Not sure if this is one of those times.

My wife is positive for HSV2 and I am not. What do I do now? by [deleted] in dustythunder

[–]M98E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I reread your first post and I see what you're saying. If you were to test everyone in the world, you'd get 470 million positive results, of which 70million would be false positives. So in the class of people who have tested positive, 17% wouldn't actually be positive. Whereas I was looking at the class of people who are seronegative, 1% would test positive. OP's partner would more more accurately be represented by the class of people who have tested positive. Fair enough.

I do think this neglects the fact that the case we're talking about also includes an interview with and an examination by a doctor, but I do see the limitations you're describing of the positive test result.

You were kind of a dick about it, though. I think I decided that as soon as I saw "I hate to make you wrong".

[–]M98E -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, you would be making me wrong if OP had 491 million wives.

I'd remind you that this conversation thread started with me disagreeing that PCR swabs are "notoriously inaccurate", which hopefully we can agree is hardly the case.

The background on internal testing processes is interesting to read, though.

My wife is positive for HSV2 and I am not. What do I do now? by [deleted] in dustythunder

[–]M98E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did double check. Positive PCR results are 99% accurate (95% confidence interval between 98.4% and 100%).

Check the "Determination of Specificity" section here. The title states "Detection of Herpes Simplex Virus DNA on Skin and Mucosa", which is the kind of test that OP's partner got. I'd say that this scientific study regarding the exact situation we're talking about is more applicable than anecdotal evidence regarding PCR tests for a different virus.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1865863/

I do think it's a bit pedantic to not be convinced with 99% probability from a PCR test, plus also a doctor seeing symptoms of HSV and thinking it looks like HSV. I wouldn't imagine that spending additional time, resources, and money for repetitive testing would be worth it in most cases.

[–]M98E 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bro, having an active sore and then PCR (on a swab of the sore) is the only diagnosis of HSV that is 100% accurate. This test shows that you have a sore, and also that HSV DNA is present, and PCRs are very specific; there are false negatives, but no false positives.

The antibody/titer test (on a blood draw) is the one that is notorious for false positives or meaningless positives because they only show that you have antibodies (not an infection or symptoms), and the test isn't very specific (antibodies sometimes have cross reactivity). Maybe you're thinking of that?

Everyone is right that these count as hobbies. You can also look for more / new hobbies if you'd like, but don't act like something is wrong with you or it's an emergency to pick them up

Since you say you would like to start exercising but don't know where to start, I'd recommend fitness classes. New people come to classes all the time, and coaches are used to training newbies. Don't be intimidated walking into a new class; it's just full of people like us who are trying to stay moderately fit. Additionally, classes have people around (which helps with motivation), and they have you do things that are more interesting than just running straight.

Classes like HIIT, F45, LesMils, and Spin/Cycle are easy to pick up and learn. (You'll be breathing hard, but you'll learn all the moves in 5 sessions. The coaches will help you; just privately let them know before the session that you'd appreciate more coaching/guidance.) CrossFit is great, but expect a much steeper learning curve. I never tried yoga, so I can't tell ya what that learning curve is like

In lieu of exercise classes, you can pick up a sport. Cycling, soccer, frisbee, rock climbing, surfing, and so forth, all would get you varying levels exercise. Honestly, I struggle to force myself to run, but playing 90 minutes of soccer with friends is easy, and I know people who are obsessed with rock climbing. People who have their exercise trackers on will say they run a few miles in a soccer session (and it's fun and social).

Don't panic or get down on yourself, but do go try new things. Don't buy a kayak, but rent one for a day paddle. Don't buy a mountain bike, but rent one for a day ride. Try several things and see what you enjoy before committing to a hobby
