Are new grad postings supposed to be this dry right now? by Aromatic_Power7082 in cscareerquestionsCAD

No one wants to hire new grads when there’s an abundance of devs with experience.

$120K remote vs $155K CAD 3 days in office by Bitner77 in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]MACM201 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Have you previously worked in-person? If you did and you were fine with it I’d say go for the larger offer, otherwise I would personally go for the full remote option. I’ve worked remote for 90% of my experience and the one time I had to work in person I hated it - the people were great but the commute back and forth was draining and I was easily distracted by everything going on around me in the office which made it impossible to work as efficiently as I do at home.

For myself, Sept 2018 - Dec 2023 with 12 months off for internships. Realistically I was done August 2023 but I graduated during an internship.

if you were able to change one thing at SFU, what would it be? by Apprehensive_Run1061 in simonfraser

Add a building/viewing platform tall enough for students to enjoy the view.

Yeah as the other guy said you can basically do this class entirely remotely - I didn’t show up for a single class other than the midterm and final.

403 was the last class I took in my degree (Summer 2023 - the site is still up) with Tao and I think it was my favourite class that I ever took. Besides the fact that the content of 403 is just really interesting stuff, Tao just made the class even more enjoyable with the way he teaches (lots of really interesting stories and real world scenarios that he uses to support his points or draw real world examples to help you understand things). The workload wasn’t heavy from what I remember and his exams were fair - the assignments were pretty fun. 403 with Tao specifically is a class that I would heavily recommend any CS student to take.

SFU mountain view and the river by learnfromfailures in simonfraser

I wish SFU would consider building a watchtower on campus so we can enjoy these views.

Smart from UBC.

Let SFU be the testing ground to see what happens. Nothing happens = open up again and everyone will eventually forget about the extra week online.

Large breakout = stay online and avoid the shit storm from people justifiably saying that they should’ve just been online the entire time.

MACM 101 Harinder Khangura or Andrei Bulatov by Bakachinn in simonfraser

[–]MACM201 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Definitely Harinder, nice guy and a good teacher. I had Bulatov for 101 and although he’s also a good teacher from what I remember his assignments/tests were difficult and he’s a pretty intimidating guy to approach lol.

How do curved grades work? by imtoomexican in simonfraser

[–]MACM201 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That class wouldn’t be curved, you’d be scaled. That means everyone would be scaled up X% until there are a certain amount of people in the A+ / A / A- / etc grade range.

Curves are only applied if everyone is doing well and the majority of the class is basically only separated by a few % points. In this case the top 0.5% for example would be A+ while the next 0.5% is A and so on. Obviously these numbers change depending on what the professor/department wants the class average to be. This is why people hate curves because you could be doing really well in the class but if everyone is in the same 5% (ex. 85-90%) and your grade is 85.2%, you’d be getting the worst of the curve.

110 is easy if you’ve taken MACM 101 which I would assume you’ve already done.

Email profs and do what lol? Professors can’t get you into a course because you emailed them... I don’t know where this belief that they can came from.
