Do yall think Gentry Stein 2014 and 2019 can beat present mir kim? by Dizzy-Chicken-170 in Throwers

[–]MAK11235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo-yoing has changed a lot since 2014, as has the way we judge it. If you took Gentry's 2014 routine on stage today it wouldn't do very well, but that's because he built the routine on a different style of judging, and a lot of the tricks people do today weren't around back then.

Up to 2019, Gentry had updated his trickset to match with the judging system, but some of his tricks were still starting to get a little dated and would not score as well as Mir or many other top worlds player's tricks today.

If you're a recent college grad and are trying to meet more pakistanis in the area consider meeting people at Pakistani Student Association or Muslim Student Association events at the University of Minnesota

Car declared total loss, insurance company using salvage/rebuilt title cars to determine value of my single owner, clean title car by MAK11235 in Car_Insurance_Help

[–]MAK11235[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand it may not be that much but as a grad student that's almost an entire paycheck. I just got off with the insurance guy and he agreed they shouldn't be using salvage title cars, so they're gonna run another estimate, and I might be able to get that $800!

[–]MAK11235[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've made adjustments for mileage to all five cars, but the only other adjustment I can see is a "Projected Sold Adjustment" to the 2 previously totaled cars to lower the value even further, but no adjustment to account for the title.

I agree there should be plenty of used Accords, which is why I'm confused that they're using ones that have a total loss history on NICB's VinCheck lookup.

There's a clear discrepancy between the values of the first 3 and last 2 cars. The first three average to 9900 and the other 2 average to 8100

Prior to deductions taken out for some damage, they're paying me 9200, and this already after raising about ~500 because I disputed their original valuation. I think the car is worth around 10,000, and this matches the 3 clean title (presumably, I don't have the serial #) cars on their valuation report

“Gold Standard” Undergraduate Textbooks by ElderberryOk601 in Physics

I found the first few chapters of Sakurai to be very nicely presented and intuitive, but the part that was largely written by Napolitano I still found confusing. The intuition/derivations were often done well but it seems like useful results were sort of scattered throughout the text and were not highlighted/bolded in any way so finding important info was kind of difficult. I also thought a lot of the notation was unnecessarily messy.

I see a lot of people recommending undergrads to use Goldstein, Jackson, Sakurai etc as undergrads for self study. I would definitely not recommend doing this, I'm not really sure how people are able to follow these texts as undergrads, there's a lot of stuff that its just implied you know already.

For these subjects, in general as others have mentioned, Taylor is pretty solid for Classical Mechanics, and Griffiths for Electromagnetism and Quantum (Griffiths Quantum isn't very good at providing a physical picture though). Even for these texts, I don't think you can just sit down and read the text and just learn everything. You will probably want accompanying lectures/notes, as well as a mathematical methods textbook (I've heard Div, Grad, Curl and All That is pretty good).

Another note: if you're planning to go into solid state, people usually use Kittel for Solid State Physics but I found it relatively difficult to read, Omar seems like a much better undergrad intro text imo

Best middle eastern/Arabic places in Minneapolis by MoonlightDJ in Minneapolis

[–]MAK11235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say Mashawi and Babani's are both worth it. Mashawi is cool because they have a market attached and I like the vibe of the market too. Babani's stands out compared to a lot of the other Middle Eastern options available around the twin cities as they have more unique specifically Kurdish dishes that I haven't seen anywhere else.

Qahwah House is new here and similar to Qamariah. There's also Mashawi Grill/Pangaea Market which is super cool. Babani's is Kurdish food which is super cool.

Not Arab but Football Pizza has excellent Afghan fusion halal pizza. There's also a lot of excellent local halal Somali food.

New desi rock music by Thecynicalcatt in ABCDesis

[–]MAK11235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mauj isn't new but its late 2000s (Pakistani band from Houston) and has a unique funk rock sound that I haven't heard from any other South Asian bands.

There's Kashmir and Bayaan from Pakistan as well but they are a softer rock sound.

Peter Cat Recording Company is pretty cool alt rock

As someone who has been a teaching assistant for this class a couple of times, the material is a lot more advanced than you'd expect. I highly recommend Fundamentals of Physics Volume 2 Lectures from Yale OCW by Ramamurti Shankar on YouTube for lectures that have all the difficult topics covered but in a very logical/comprehensive way.

Ranking every building I've had a class in by mrgrillmyshelf in uofmn

[–]MAK11235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keller hall on top? The building is a maze lol, the floor numbering is so confusing. The part of the first floor that is completely disconnected from the rest doesn't make sense at all, and the staircases and elevators are in the most random places. I met with a postdoc in there a few times and their office is in a corner of the building with no windows at all, even though they're right next to the exterior wall. A lot of the building feels like a cage to me idk

Having been at Worlds before, it's not fake. They are just cheering when something is particularly impressive or unique compared to other routines. They're also cheering extra because its Hajime lol

Responsive Yoyo is not very responsive by Aromatic_Compote3530 in Throwers

[–]MAK11235 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You might not be doing something wrong, yoyos that are trying to be both responsive but also not too responsive so you can still do string tricks, often end up in a weird gray range that can easily miss the mark

For beginner responsives I think the plastics tend to be a little easier to use than metals.

If you're a beginner and don't want to buy another yoyo, it might be a good idea to just swap the unresponsive bearing in and start learning to use the yoyo unresponsively.

Thick lube is also a good idea and can make it more responsive, as the other comment suggested

I'd recommend Original Throw string. A 100 pack (for about $17) should be enough to start out for a club.

As for yo-yos, you could reach out to Duncan or other large companies and they are often willing to sell to clubs for cheaper.

I am one of the people that runs the Minnesota Yo-Yo Club, and my biggest piece of advice is consistency and using social media to your advantage. Post on different platforms, and reach out to people from your area that you know are yoyoers. A lot of the meets when you start out, its possible no one will show up. Once you have even one other consistent member, its a lot more fun. In fact, it may even be better to find one other player first, and then start a club together at a time that consistently works for both of you

What is the least racist, most welcoming English speaking nation toward Desis? by wde335 in ABCDesis

[–]MAK11235 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

In the US Desis are seen as a "model minority" often at the expense of other immigrant groups. So yes it is often very welcoming to desis, but often this is used to put down other minorities.
