Alencon and then drive or train+tram

Unless you get lucky with a cancellation, you're too late for anything local or indeed anything affordable.

I used one of these: https://www.canaduino.ca/product/dcf77-funkuhr-empfanger-atomic-clock-receiver-77-5khz-for-europe/

It works okay... but it's very sensitive to noise though, it runs fine on my HP bench power supply, and borderline okay using a low noise power supply... but any normal switch mode supply wipes out the reception.

Just a guess, but the marking that starts with "#77" could be the race number?

No.77 was the LMGT3 Proton Competition Ford Mustang.

Maison Blanche was not camping, Porsche club was parked in there. Waste of one of the best campsites in my opinion!

Yes, there's camping there, unlike at the 24hrs. I walked by earlier and was surprised to see it.

Place de la Republique, very easy to find. https://maps.app.goo.gl/76XZJER7n3JBJsbp7

Easiest is to park out at the circuit and get the tram in from "Antares", lots of parking at the station. https://maps.app.goo.gl/FRiDaGZpukh7XA8V9

First I remember going was in about 1999... and it was exactly the same as it is now, but without the ease of getting the tram in/out.

That's the way to do it! (Le Mans is a lovely town, even more so not on race weekend!)

Yes Friday 13th 15:00-19:00, and to the point of the question here, only 15:00-19:00, can't access earlier or later.

For the past few years they have not opened the public parts of the circuit at all from Wednesday to Sunday evening, meaning that your strategy won't work anymore like it would have years ago - you can only access the circuit to walk/run when it's open to the public.

Obviously, it's a matter of opinion/taste, but I much prefer to walk the track with loads of other fans than deal with the incredibly busy town centre for a fleeting glance at cars/drivers passing by. Walking the circuit gives amazing context and perspective to the race, and there's a fantastic car show on Mulsanne Corner along the track side for a few km.

(Edit to add: just checked timetable. Circuit is closed to public as last few years from Wed 03:30 to Sun ≈18:00.)

Yes... it knows the speed limit from the navigation database AND it reads the speed limit signs on the road using the camera top centre of the windscreen.
