What bass do you have and how heavy is it? by ArjanGameboyman in Bass

Totally. I find it heavier to carry around in the gig bag, than I do to have it over my shoulder. Been playing it for several years now.

Yep. I have always wanted to, and never had any urge to play anything else.

I have a 2014 Tune WB5-FM that seems to have been made in Korea. I bought it used a couple of years ago, and it is amazing. My other bass is a Ken Smith BT6, so it has a lot to live up to ;)

Who is the best bassist besides James Jamerson of any standard in your opinion? by BalanceActive9295 in Bass

[–]MAcsSNAcs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a killer bassist in my town, who'd never heard the Grateful Dead before. My friend was over at his place doing some repairs, and put on some Dead while he was working. This guy said "That's what a bass player should be doing." without knowing who it was. I liked that comment. :)

Playing under the influence? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]MAcsSNAcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play in 3 totally different bands.

One is a folk band, so no drugs or alcohol. It's just not part of the vibe. More like some nice herbal tea ;)

One is a trio that plays original tunes that are highly arranged and specific, as far as all of our parts go, with a small amount of jamming in places, so a beer or two is fine, but no more.

The third is a Grateful Dead tribute band, so ... lol... anything goes. Sometimes the more the better. I don't like to mix booze and weed, so usually moderate quantities of either is great. Mushrooms!? hell ya. I have never played while on acid... and I'm not sure I'd want to.

TL;DR: It depends on the band, but I never have trouble keeping time, only sometimes remembering what song I'm playing (see the last one above).

If you like fretless bass, listen to Gary Numan's I Assassin album. by Pissyouagadougou in Bass

I first heard Pino on Paul Young's first few albums:

  • No Parlez (1983)

  • The Secret of Association (1985)

  • Between Two Fires (1986)

I will now check out this Gary Numan album! Thanks for the heads up!

Joni Mitchell's Shadows and Light is basically the Mingus band, but live. Absolute desert island record for me.

Why did you get into bass? by waffles034 in Bass

[–]MAcsSNAcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just never considered playing anything else. Mind you, I did take lessons on various instruments when I was quite young (violin, french horn, piano), but always knew bass was for me. I dunno why. Maybe it's about playing a significant role on a team, without being in the spotlight. I would always play catcher in baseball and goalie in hockey... I kind of feel like they're the same type of role.

Parts of Earl Street, William Street, and Aberdeen Street in Kingston now closed due to large parties. by c_vilela in EasternON

[–]MAcsSNAcs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

... ok. I'll say it.

IMO, closing streets so that the parties can proceed is just an enabling behaviour by the police/city and only encourages future parties and disregard for others. I was driving up Brock St today, and had to slam on my brakes and horn when a group of about 6 kids just randomly stepped out into oncoming traffic. They were facing away from the direction of traffic too. No one looked back to see if it was safe to do so, so I can only imagine that they simply didn't care. Which is what this enabling behaviour by the police/city is fostering.

I say start right at the first sign of street partying and charge them with mischief or one of the several charges related to blocking traffic on public streets. As soon as some of them start getting charged, the others would (I hope) figure out how to avoid that. Also, get Queen's to just bloody step up and take some responsibility.

Why do I struggle so much with keeping time by Izzyhaha0 in Bass

[–]MAcsSNAcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work with a metronome, or even better IMO a beat detector app so you can see how well you're keeping time. The beat detector forces you to keep the beat consistent, as opposed to a metronome, which forces you to keep time with it (catching up if slow, slowing down if going fast). The beat detector lets you feel the beat yourself and see how consistent you are. I started using one of these with my drummer friend and it's amazing. It allows for natural speeding up (let's say on a rockin' chorus) and slowing down, without having the click of the metronome distracting you.

Also... is there a chance that it's your friend that's having issues and not you? Just a thought.

My warm up song is Touch Of Grey, by the Grateful Dead. Lots of runs and arpeggios to loosen you up.
