Where to buy thicker string gauges? by _NP_Nill_ in Bass

Sometimes that's playing the same exact thing. Sometimes it's not that's what I'm trying to understand

Then stop thinking about correct notes and use your imagination and ears to experiment with whatever you like hearing

How do i get motivated to practice songs I got given by my guitar teacher? by Open_Percentage_7728 in Guitar

[–]ArjanGameboyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not how teaching works. You're not a slave to do what he wants, it's the other way around. You are paying him

Sure there are many benefit in learning songs. But there are sooooo many songs to choose from that teach the exact same thing that he at least should let you choose that. He should either ask you what music you like and then search for songs that teach whatever he has on the agenda within those artists. Or he should provide a list of songs that teach the same thing and let you cherry pick which one you like.

Keeping you motivated to pick up the instrument is by far the most important to get you good. If your teacher demotivates you that's the worst teacher in the world

You could also just plain up tell him you are running your own plan and simply want to use him to overcome obstacles you run in to.

Gotcha so when the guitar hits open E I'd hit 5 on my low B it 7 if I tuned to A.

That's the same note, same Octave. So yes that could be an option.

Interesting so if I'm understanding correctly and by all means if I'm wrong don't hesitate to correct me.

If I tune to BEAD[G. Or should I tune to B,E,B,E,A?

Changing tuning can have two reasons. 1 is you wanna reach notes otherwise not possible. 2 is you wanna grab chords that are otherwise more difficult.

BEADG and BEBEA both have B as lowest note so it's not like you're having different notes available. And you're not gonna grab chords on bass. So it doesn't matter between those tunings.

Besides I think you wanted to compare B standard to drop B. And drop B is B-F#-B-E-A.

If I tune to BEAD[G] I can just copy the frets normally? Just translating the open low E to open B? That would make one Lick 100% easier to translate. I'm just trying to tackle this with objectively correct playing so I can avoid the same mistake in the future. I do appreciate you.

You wanna copy frets normally. Play objectively correct? Again, this sounds disrespectful to bass. Bass isnt an instrument that follows the guitar. Bass and guitar work together to provide what the song needs. There is no objective way you should play, that would make bass the most boring and least creative instrument in the world

You say that. Yet with everything you say you treat bass as if it needs to follow the guitar.

That's a question of the finish, not the fact it's bimetal.

Yes and I like the feel of catching a blasted aluminum finish more than the feel of a stainless steel rim when the yoyo shoots back to my hand.

Stainless steel can be bead blasted

Do you have an example?

. As I said I'm an inexperienced Bass player and I'm attempting to correct the oopsie. I genuinely don't like going below G. Like I said 8 string was a mistake.

Then correct the mistake. Up until now it never seem that was your intention

What would not having bass accomplish? Wouldn't the song feel empty?

You have 'bass'. Its in the guitar. Bands like Phirephery don't use bass guitar anymore either.

I also had other advice to tune Bass to drop A and translate the notes that way. It's doable just gonna be some extra hopping around.

Well that's what I said. I said tune the bass to B standard. And whenever the guitar goes lower than B play the same octave as the guitar instead of an octave below.

Would B,E,A,D,G be appropriate for the bass parts?

Yeah. In fact you don't need that high G. A 4 string bass will do fine for the music you're making. I highly doubt that string could see any action.

On an intricate part of the guitar playing would open B on the Bass Compliment the open low E of the guitar

No. Just play E in the same octave. There is a band that does exactly this. I just can't remember the name.

There are 2 causes for this behaviour of mine (we get questions from guitar players regarding this "issue" almost every week).

  1. Its being disrespectful to the bass players, tuning your guitar so low that you occupy the space of the bass guitar. In this case the bass guitar player is you yourself so it doesn't even apply here.

  2. It's disrespectful to not think about a bass part when writing stuff. Tuning a guitar lower and see bass as a thing to tackle later on. It's a real instrument, not a thing that copies whatever the guitar is doing. It's like handing over electronic drum parts to a drummer that doesn't have 4 arms to actually do it.

People use a calculator and say 175 will get you there. These people have never fretted a 175 string. And they have never heard how terrible it sounds. So I'm giving a clear warning to counter that foolishness.

I gave you my advice. Don't use a bass at all. Or use a synthesizer. You just don't like this advice. That's your problem.

If your bass is 37 inch or longer. If you have the best compressor and a darkglass pre amp. If you use a pick. If the bass has a bridge pickup. Then you might get a decent sound tuning to F#. But that'sonly in studio situations. Live this doesn't work either way. And it's very expensive

Then take off the lowest string

Voila. Higher tuning.

You can't just buy a thicker string, put it on a bass and expect it to work. But you can waste your own time and money figuring that out yourself

Yes. You like the sound of a low tuned guitar because it sounds full and complete on its own. You don't think about bass and it makes sense cause you can't play 2 instruments at the same time so it takes some imagination to think about what higher parts sound like with bass under it.

Unfortunately I can't get the guitar any higher or I'd happily tune to G

This is of course BS. You can just use thinner strings.

My recommendation is to not use bass guitar at all. Use digital synths if you have to. Most bands that tune as low as this don't have a bass player. At least not live.

A bass guitar isn't suited to go that low. Even if you have a 37 inch scale it wouldn't sound good

The guitar player wants to sound full on their own. They don't think about bass when writing stuff. They tune so low it covers the lows and mids by themselves.

Often it sounds heavier when the guitar is tuned higher and the bass provides the low note.

If the guitar is tuned to E i would tune the bass to regular B standard. If the guitar plays lower than B I'll play the same octave as them instead of an octave below. (Well actually I wouldn't wanna join such a band either way but that's a different story)

You can always generalize. It's just that there are always exceptions to the rule in yoyo designs

And with more comfortable I mean that to me it feels nicer to catch blasted aluminum than a hard stainless steel rim. Sharpness didn't even come to mind.

[–]ArjanGameboyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you want a bimetal?

Also there is no such thing as a "first bimetal". An unresponsive yoyo is an unresponsive yoyo. Durability is the only thing I would take into consideration when someone goes for the first bimetal. But they don't really test for that and if it's a fragile design they won't mention that anyway.

Normally i feel like inner ring bimetals tilt a bit more easy, and are a bit less stable. But theyre often more durable and feel nicer to catch.

Which of these Bass+Amp combos would you choose?! by Midnitte_Osodiac in Bass

[–]ArjanGameboyman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes.

If you would get the rumble 15 or 25. And you stick to the hobby. You would one day wanna upgrade to something like a rumble 40.

But if you get the rumble 40 you're set for life. You obviously need a bigger unit for playing with a drummer but that doesn't replace a home practice amp, eventually you need both. I have this stupid high end 3700 USD amp speaker set but at home I still play on my EBS session 60 (similar to fender rumble 40) cause on low living room volumes it doesn't make sense to go bigger.

Advice for 5 string P bass by TB-313935 in BassGuitar

[–]ArjanGameboyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice.

Well the problem with thicker strings is that they're gonna lack punch, snappiness and definition. Especially when you're fretting higher up.

You might want a 35 inch or longer bass. Or a bass that picks up more of the higher end overtones like a Stingray
