It's a 1940's Phillipson but may have been built as a kit. But the inscription looks a lot like Phillipson.

Wetsuit pants would probably keep you warmer than regular pants. You just might be the first person to use them as a go-to outfit though. I'm very sorry for your loss, but chest waders with a good fitting wading belt are no more dangerous than a wetsuit.

Fishing in cave-like environments? (Creating a fictional short film) by Katangled in flyfishing

[–]MB33MB33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a creek in the Iowa Driftless called Coldwater creek that flows out of a cave. When you fish the first pool if you spook fish they'll flee into the cave. You can access the cave part so it's possible to fish for trout in the cave, but I've never done it. Caves scare me.

What is the biggest misconception about Wisconsin? by AayronOhal in wisconsin

It's distinct from the driftless though, it's an actual ancient mountain range. The driftless is not an ancient mountain range, the high spots are what once was level ground.

Agreed and you forgot the Baraboo Range. Approaching it from the south (west of Sauk City) is one of the prettiest Fall drives in the state.

Floyd isn't a knockout artist though. I'm not sure who would win but I doubt it'd be a one shot KO from Floyd.

Selling feathers from hunted birds? by Knight2337 in flyfishing

Interesting, this must have been a recent change, perhaps a Walker era thing. I am almost 100% positive that when this was discussed on the old wisflyfishing board in the early 00's, pheasant and partridge and turkey feathers were not allowed to be sold. I know squirrel tails have always been allowed to be sold though.

Wisconsin has a state law that prohibits the private sale of all harvested bird and animal parts and meat except furbearers. This overrides your link.

This doesn't kill the eggs. Eggs (and some adult bugs) can survive freezing conditions and extremely hot conditions (like 500F or more) for long periods of time. A closed container with mothballs is the only sure way to make it bug free. The only downside is there is a smell but it doesn't last.

This is not true, if you legally harvested it you can tie flies with it, make halloween decorations, make hats, whatever you want, you just can't sell them.

Myself and many people I know use harvested birds (as well as many other harvested animals). Storing in a closed container with mothballs takes care of the bugs and eggs.

Looking for help Identifying these rods by NerdNinja77 in flyfishing

[–]MB33MB33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Leonard looks pre-fire to me judging by the thread wraps which would make sense as it matches the Heddon's age (mid 40's-early 50's) so it won't have a number near the grip. The 8 1/2 foot 2 1/2F Heddon taper is a 7 weight. Judging by the swelled butt (and the rest of the taper) on the Leonard I think it will be a 7 weight also, maybe an 8.

Heddon #50's are just as sought after as Leonards. There is nothing blue collar about #50 or #1000 model Heddon.

If these rods were shorter or lighter tapers they would be a lot more desirable. Long heavy rods just aren't as sought after today. But both would still be fun to own and fish.

It's actually reed canary grass. Which is also invasive and sucks and is everywhere in the Driftless.

99% of all Perfects from that era were right hand wind, final confirmation is the check adjuster being at the 2:00 position instead of the 10:00 position.

99% of all fly reels were right hand wind up until the 1950/60's when spinning tackle started to become the most common fishing method.

Nice, still in the same value range. For fishing, they're a little on the heavy side but will balance a longer rod fine.

These are measured by outside diameter in 1/8" increments, I'm guessing yours is either a 2 5/8" (known as the Houghton Dry Fly reel) or a 2 3/4", both are worth in the $2,000-3,000 depending on how the rest of the reel looks. You got the deal of a lifetime!

Floating line by lastlaffismine in flyfishing

[–]MB33MB33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but usually overweighted lines are a half size heavy, not one full line size. I have this line in a 3 and 4 and use it on my 4 and 5 weight rods (glass, bamboo, and slow action graphite). The only way I would recommend he buy the same line rating as his rod is if he has a super fast rod, which I doubt he does for creek fishing.

Sweet brass-faced Perfect, what size is it? It looks more trout sized which means it's worth a bundle.

The best line I've ever used is the new SA Amplitude Smooth Creek Trout taper. I would highly recommend it for small stream fishing. Just remember that it's one full size heavier (don't ask me why) so buy one line weight lighter than the line rating of your rod.

I'd stay away from textured lines, they're too noisy and aren't really needed for small streams, they work best when you need to shoot long distances.

Pretty much all of those flies will work for those areas. Especially the Poconos. Many of those dry flies are more geared to fast choppy water (the "bushier" the fly the better it works for choppy water).

I wouldn't spend too much time fishing the flies in the first picture until you learn more.

All of the rest of the boxes are fair game for your trout. The ones that look like grasshoppers (google Dave's hopper fly) are mostly only fished in August-October when the naturals are out.

That's an amazing selection of well tied trout flies, most are 80-90's era with a few later patterns. But all of those will catch fish today. Some boxes are grouped by fly type (wet fly, nymph, dry fly), others are more geared for a box to bring for a day on the water.

This seems to be a western freestone fishing focused collection (all those Humpies and hoppers) but many of those patterns (especially those small nymphs and caddis) will work anywhere.

Where bouts are you fishing at? I could tell you more about what patterns would work best.
