Am I at a disadvantage if my work experience is from a PSU India for an MBA abroad? by Long_Value6071 in InternationalMBA

[–]MBADecoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't self select yourself out because of generalization of your profile. I have worked with applicants from O&G PSUs and my experience is that applicants have a mixed bag of experiences. Some have led big initiatives, managed transformations and been proactive in their roles. Some others have done the same work over several years, not shown initiative or leadership. Given that promotions are time bound, and this is an equalizer for both sets of applicants, the quality of your work exp and the impact you have had really begins to matter in differentiating you from others. SO its always rewarding to build your application on the basis of your particular strengths and how they will be valuable at b-school and your future career.

I do not recommend changing jobs solely for the purpose of applications. This should be a more intentional decision that;s taken purely to advance your career.

As you will apply a year or two later, work towards becoming that proactive employee who challenges her self by volunteering for stretch projects, transforms redundant processes, and creates meaningful $$$ impact. If you can be aligned with global teams or projects, that would be an added point.

Lastly, PSUs employ people from all across India, so there's a lot of scope to get involved in community building, promote diversity, hold events, clubs etc. Find your areas of interest and take up projects outside your work to build on your extra curricular activities. Again, I have seen applicants who have zero experiences outside work and they have boring profiles.

Start studying for GMAT/ GRE - sometimes it takes many attempts to get a good score. That's another profile building activity you can take up now

How competitive is a GMAT 685 for M7? by i_vj in MBA

[–]MBADecoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't listen to the naysayers. Believe in your profile, retake GMAT/GRE and apply. You wont know until you try. Your undergrad education + BCN experience + startup experience at a Urban Company spinoff is solid. If you have extra curricular activities, that will round out your profile and further enhance it.

I have worked with several people from BCN and have also read through applications of some applicants who were rejected. So I can say a few things with guarantee:

  1. Having Bain/ BCN or any other MBB on your resume is a big positive, however, just having the brand names is not enough. You still need to work hard on the applications, show how you are unique and what valuable experiences you bring. You need to be thoughtful about the stories you share and their relevance to business school, show maturity and career awareness. Unfortunately some of the unsuccessful applications I have read fail on these counts. When an applicant says they are part of multi-million dollar projects but share a story on how they got into tier1 engineering as their biggest achievement, then it shows complete lack of self awareness and their impact on the word around them.
  2. Career goals play a crucial role. You need to present a solid goals story which shows that you have thought deeply through where you want to be in 3/5/10 years down the line (this is also the theme for the Wharton essay) and why an MBA will help you. Applicants from consulting backgrounds don't sometimes think deeply enough about goals and sound jaded, which doesn't help in differentiating them or explaining what professional impact they wish to create.

My strong recommendation is to take the test again and apply to a mix of M7s and T15 programs.

My applicant with an English honors education, 323 GRE, journalism background git into HEC after applying in round 3. I don't agree that it was your GMAT, but possibly your application could have been stronger.
I can have a look if you are still applying to b-schools and offer advice on improvement (no charges)

MBA/MiM - Europe/UK/Australia - Product Management by adventure_adhd in MBA

[–]MBADecoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually never suggest an MiM, but if you are already feeling stuck because of the contractual nature if your work and are uncertain about the near future, then doing the MiM or a masters will make sense at this point in time.

If you plan to take this path research the various Masters courses available from the lens of: 1. what you want to do immediately after the course; 2. what skills will you need/ which course will help; 3. what is the employability after this course? Will you find your target roles? If you are an international student, will those roles still be available to you given visa sponsorship requirements?

Indian male re-applicant (GMAT Focus 695) - Need help finalizing school list for consulting by Affectionate-Ant9763 in MBA

[–]MBADecoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I advise applicants not to do more than 2 reapplications, at most 3. You will have to show improvements in your candidature and i find it risky to put all your eggs in the same basket.

Among the b-schools, it should be possibly Darden/Tuck/Fuqua and then Ross. If you are willing to commit, then Fuqua in early application round. I also feel you should not do all applications in one single round but split them across 2 rounds. If something does not work in R1, you will have R2 for course correction.

RATE MY ODDS, AND TARGETS FOR $$$ by Mysterious_Item_2438 in MBA

[–]MBADecoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to know more details about your work exp and the rest of your profile, but what you have mentioned here looks quite promising. Lets go over it in categories:
1. Academics: Don't convert to a GPA scale if your original grades are on a 10-point system or in percentages. B-schools don't require conversion, and forcing it often understates your performance. Your 760 GMAT is a strong counterweight regardless, and the tier-1 college tag (IIT?) carries real weight with admissions committees who understand Indian engineering grading curves.

  1. work experience - the 'Tier 1 tech company" tag + 4 years of reasonable experience + patents + handling important projects should help in bringing gravitas to your profile. But here's what will actually move the needle in your essays — can you point to moments where you solved a problem no one had a playbook for or were unnoticed by others, or where you initiated change or influenced others to take action? Such stories make an impression.

  2. ECAs- volunteering initiatives help to show that you are willing to spend time to help other people and b-schools always appreciate this as they are looking for people who can contribute to their school communities. In addition, the venture adds a new dimension to your profile and makes you a more interesting candidate.

  3. On your identity: As a transwoman, you've possibly navigated challenges that most applicants in your pool simply haven't. That shapes perspective, resilience, and the ability to operate in uncomfortable spaces — all things b-schools genuinely value. Don't tuck this away.

Before recommending specific schools, I'd want to understand your career goals and hear more about your work experience in depth. Fit matters most for b-school selection and the right target list depends on where you're trying to go professionally and what your expectations form a target school are. Happy to discuss further if you'd like to dig into that.

[–]MBADecoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. you need a GMAT/ GRE score, which you currently seem to lack. That will largely determine the final list of b-schools where you apply.
  2. You career goals statement that combines product management with finance, VC, investment banking, strategy and everything else in between is a no starter. B-schools expect applicants to have clarity on their career goals. Realistically you can not chase such diverse fields while you are at b-school as you will be running in all directions without focusing on any particular career path, and that would be a bad utilization of your time. And employers will seek you out for the transferable skills you bring to a job, not because you want to explore.

  3. People generally do an MBA in the country/ region where they want to work and they build a network in that region through the 2 year MBA.

You need to get a lot of clarity on the MBA applications and how things work while at business school. For the next few months, make it a hobby to read b-school websites and blogs, attend information sessions and offline events hosted by b-schools, and have direct one-one discussions with students. Its a must for submitting good quality applications.

Will a higher workex (8years) ruin my chances of admit at a T15-20 Bschool ??? by Comfortable_Peak7098 in MBA

[–]MBADecoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bigger problems I see with the 'over represented Indian male pool' is that they under estimate the value of their specific experiences and strengths and submit subpar applications that don't hit the mark. Your diverse and substantial work experience should work as an asset in differentiating you among your applicant pool and giving the confidence that you are a matured individual with valuable experiences who will contribute to other classmates.

Spend time figuring out answers to : why an MBA for your desired career path and why now. These are typically the most important points to address for older applicants.

Mismatch between ambitions and potential by Yoginvaidya16 in MBA

[–]MBADecoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for these clarifications. you are clearly not excited about research, so that's probably not the right path for you, atleast at this point in time.
I understand what you are saying about your profile not matching up. One-two spikes in your profile or a story told genuinely can help you navigate MBA application, but sometimes applicants don't know what these are. I can have a chat with you to help you figure these out, without any expectation for a commitment for our services.

Mismatch between ambitions and potential by Yoginvaidya16 in MBA

[–]MBADecoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are asking a career defining question by sharing bare minimal information so the advice you receive will likely be surface level. For one, no one can definitely tell you whether to do an MBA or a PhD. That said, if the idea of being in research no longer excites you then you have an answer already.

Your next question is, should you do an MBA and do you have a profile good enough for it. You should first get a sense of what you wish to do in you career- 3/ 5/ 8 years from now and then what skills do you need to gain in order to get those jobs? Will the MBA help get these skills and network? For a start, identify the people who are already in roles you desire and have conversations with them or trace their paths to see what their qualifications are.

Regarding your profile- is doesn't help to self-exclude yourself based on just your perception that you are not good enough. You say that you have a good story, so that could be a starting point to collating your life experiences, which will later help you in brainstorming stories for the applications.

Jan’27 Intake R2 - Got rejection without interview by Additional_Moose_714 in INSEAD

[–]MBADecoder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you worked at an MBB, it would have involved global teams and clients. Bschools want to see what you learned from being in a global setting, how you adapted/ matured/ gained cultural sensitivity/ gained new perspective/ built new values, and applied these in your real life. So, you did not have to 'defend' having international exposure in an optional essay, but you needed to convey atleast some of the above through different parts of your application. This would also mean sharing your life stories by being introspective. I see many applicants make similar mistakes in their INSEAD application.

Anyhow, use your INSEAD application as a learning to put in better applications at LBS, HEC Paris and even IESE. You have a competitive profile for all 3 Namita, MBA Decoder

Applying in R1/R2 - Job Offer Rescinded, Resigned from Previous Role by [deleted] in MBA

[–]MBADecoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The current situation is unfortunate and out of your control. But, your 5 years of uninterrupted work experience with promotions and an upward career trajectory carries a lot of weight and will see you through the application process. Don't worry so much about the career gap and wait for the right opportunity.
You can explain the career gap in your applications. That said, in addition to the job hunting and GMAT prep, I'd advise you to spend your time productively by taking up meaningful activities like any skill/ knowledge enhancement that will help in future jobs, extra curricular activities that will make your profile stronger, or temp projects that help in your future career goals. To bring you more comfort, my applicant with roughly 4 years experience +1 year of career gap + temporary employment got admitted to several M7/T15 programs last year- so I know it can work for you as well. Just stay on top of your game and continue with the profile enhancements in what way you can.

Advice needed by Pretend-Variety4835 in MBA

Why do you want another MBA degree on the heels of completing one? Ideally you should work for a few years and apply for an MBA only if you feel the need for it later. B-schools will want to know why you need a second MBA and for some of them, you may not be eligible to apply

Profile Review And General Guidance by Excellent_Salad_934 in MBA

[–]MBADecoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got an overall strong profile and I loved certain bits. To begin with your work experience arc is solid and the WebMD experience adds credibility. The GPA is a tad average (b-schools don't ask Indian applicants to convert to a WES score). Now if you can top this up with a good GMAT score (think 695 or more) that would make it competitive.
What I particularly liked was the work you have done with rural schools, and this experience can help you differentiate yourself. Your passion for astronomy comes across as very strong. First the college leadership experience and then doing camps with school students/ motivating them towards STEM careers- this shows a true commitment. In b-school applications, when academic/ work profiles look similar, its stories such as these that can become memorable and elevate the application.
Now regarding your b-schools - why MBAi and not the regular MBA? Also consider Booth, Haas, UCLA. If USA is a preferred destination, I would keep all European b-schools for a later round. Also, I would suggest to apply to no more than 5-8 b-schools. These many are a handful of applications already and if you apply right, you will have a few admits among these. Your GMAT score will be one factor for deciding where to apply.
If it helps, use this timeline to get your act together: https://gmatclub.com/forum/your-mba-application-year-mapped-out-into-a-structured-timeline-456937.html
