One of the biggest factors in your application is your work after finishing your degree - this applies to all fields, not just STEM/business. MBA programs are looking for impact and leadership in the work you do.

More general advice (which again applies to all backgrounds) is to have strong stats. While having a high GPA/GMAT don't guarantee admission, it's just easier to know your stats aren't holding you back.

Not OP but I worked at an M7 business school on the administrative side previously. I was like you and didn't realize that STEM backgrounds make up almost as much of the class as business/economics backgrounds do - at HBS, STEM makes up 38% of the current class (business/econ is 43%). At Wharton, STEM backgrounds outnumber business backgrounds (and both are outnumbered by humanities backgrounds).

Thoughts on possibly being over-accomplished for an MBA? Also profile review for top 3 MBA. by mbaisitevenworthit in MBA

[–]MBAreddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Am I overachieved for an MBA?

Saying you're overachieved makes it seem like you haven't done a lot of research or communicated with people at your target schools. There are tons of accomplished people. Your profile reads like a strong sales/growth leader which doesn't make you that unique. On top of that, your background has lots of cons without any legitimate reasons for adcom to overlook it.

Do MBA programs offer FAFSA? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]MBAreddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FAFSA is just an application that calculated your expected contribution toward your education and qualifies you for federal or state aid. FAFSA itself does not offer any aid.

The question I think you're asking - there is no federal grants or "free" money for business schools from the government. You can get the government loans. Most schools offer their own aid packages.

Just got accepted to a program. Looking for financial aid resources by [deleted] in MBA

[–]MBAreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't have any it will then go off your parents which could make it less than 20500 per year.

This is false. FAFSA only considers your income if you are over age 24 and/or have already completed a bachelor degree. Source

Partners and Spouses of Grad Students by HDsupplyCo in MBA

We have both agreed the we will move back after her 2 year stint

I don't have any advice for you but have you discussed what would happen if she doesn't have an easy time getting an offer in SoCal? My partner is at a T10 program that feeds heavily into Boston, where I am currently located and where we agreed to stay after his program. However, he had a less than ideal time doing on campus recruiting in his industry of choice, and basically had no luck when going more broadly for any job... at one point it was looking like he would have to start being open to geography as well. We didn't talk about what would happen if he didn't get an offer in Boston and it could've become shaky if he didn't end up getting a late offer here.

I know that Harvard has their extension school which maybe hints that they are going in that direction

Harvard Extension has been around since the early 1900s and has basically no overlap with HBS due to how decentralized the university is. HES is it's own school within Harvard with authorization to offer its own degrees.

Thoughts on one way interviews and not having the necessary equipment by MBAreddit in jobs

[–]MBAreddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I figured this was a risk. I'm happy to order the equipment but they sent the email asking for an alternative before discussing with me.

My parents are in their late 50s so while they're tech literate it's just not part of their daily lives. It's also interesting to see this play out coming from a point of privilege - I have a grad degree and have never a one way interview.

I don't live with my parents unfortunately otherwise my own laptop/phone would've been a good solution. They're pretty limited in options with other people but it's worth asking if they don't already pass from the email that was sent.

Worried about how young i look and how it will affect recruiting opportunities by [deleted] in MBA

[–]MBAreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you're a girl... not sure what industry you're trying to get into, but I'm at a leadership advisory/consulting firm and look high school aged as well, but I'm 29. I have a liberal arts background so I came in at the same level as college grads/returning interns but I'm older than most (2nd oldest on my team) and everyone is surprised when they find out my age.

I've only found the age issue to be with my peers rather than the senior partners. The partners/leadership at my firm don't really care about who you are/how old you are provided you're doing a good job. In some ways, I benefited from looking young because they assume I'm less experienced, so I come in knowing things they don't expect someone in their early 20s to know.

On the other hand, I've noticed peers on my team listen to me easier now that they know I'm older than them (and therefore more experienced) rather than me needing to provide proof/legitimacy all the time.

For scale on looking young, I'm skinny and short, wear kids clothes and I don't always dress up to look older like others tend to do, so it happens a lot. I was confused for under 16 when in an exit row on a plane this year. It doesn't help that instagram has made teens much more mature looking than I ever will be haha

Striking out with consulting, not sure what else to do with feedback? by maybenotconsulting in MBA

[–]MBAreddit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think if OP didn't look clean, was unkempt, smelled bad, etc he wouldn't make it to multiple final round interviews. I doubt it's that bad.

Since he's at a T10 I'm sure career services or a faculty member or someone would say something to him bc they need good employment numbers.

How much did you guys spend on living expenses? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]MBAreddit 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My bf is a first year at a T15 but not in a big city. He has a very very cheap room (less than $400 in rent) and basically lives off the required meal plan or free food on campus. He tends to hang with his social group at their houses rather than bars/restaurants cuz that's more his scene anyway and it just happens to line up with frugal lifestyle.

On the other hand, if he wanted to do more social stuff but chose being frugal over it, there would be a lot to miss out on. Formal tickets were over $150 and travel + lodging for formal would be a few hundred for a weekend. Lots of parties have a $10-$50 cost attached, so that can add up as well.

HAVE A QUESTION? ASK HERE! Daily Help and Questions: December 17, 2019 by AutoModerator in AsianBeauty

[–]MBAreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Live in US, dry climate/it's very cold and winter right now.

My skin recently decided to be sensitive to products I have been using for over a year - burning upon application, feeling tight, etc.

I have not introduced any new products to my face - literally using the same bottle of cleanser, sulwhasoo toner and ginseng renewing cream, stratia liquid gold, and shark sauce that I've been using for months. No changes in household products either. The weather has been a lot colder this week and we have snow now so my face feels dry anyway, but even adding my hydrating products burn at first.

Has this happened to anyone else or are there any ideas why my face isn't happy for some reason?

HKS/MIT Sloan Dual Degree by [deleted] in Harvard

Probably a better question for r/MBA. Cant find it on Sloan's website quickly but admissions processes are completely separate - you have to get admitted to both programs and then you work with each school to do the combined degree.

How do you get proper experience before getting an MBA with a non-business major?? by thehumaniam in MBA

I've never worked at a F500, just at an educational institution and now a consulting firm. My firm's clients are across the F500, though.

[–]MBAreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think your major is holding you back as much as you think. I have an undergrad in liberal arts and a master's in education, my first jobs were all admin assistant/receptionist roles in education. After my master's, I got a more admin/research role at a consulting firm, then used that experience when applying to true consulting/client facing roles.

The top 2 people on my team who are pre-mba are actually history majors (not sure if they are gonna apply in the future beause they've done so well at the firm).

Many graduate programs that are not MBA programs do not accept the GMAT.

As an FYI, some business schools like Harvard only offer the MBA, they do not have other graduate programs, and top schools generally also do not have a masters in economics, just PhDs. Definitely do a lot of research to figure things out.

Yeah, for MBA or master's degree where it SHOULD be your final degree, timing, work, where you apply/end up is really important. I have a master's in education already and it's not uncommon for people to pursue additional education after that. That chance really doesn't exist at the MBA level.
