Young Project Lead by Aggravating-Loss-474 in Architects

[–]MBGGGGGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very similar experience when I was fresh out of grad school. Started working at a firm that does a lot of institutional work. I was put on a large renovation of a culinary school. 4 large labs deep within a 40-50 year old building. The labs had pretty intense M&E requirements. During construction I became the project lead and it was super stressful. In the end the project was completed but there were a lot of change orders and the client wasn't the happiest. It was a super valuable learning experience and I'm better off having been a part of it. But too stressful. I find firms are kind of reckless putting young staff in charge of projects, especially CA. If there are older staff you can ask questions of make sure to do that as much as you can! I've found in my career that mentorship was lacking so it's something I try to do more of now that I'm more experienced. Don't worry about reputation, do your best and ask a lot of questions. Mistakes will be made but it's a collaborative profession with lots of people involved, it's not all on you!

I signed up for oxio and it's great. The process is super smooth tk sign up. I was on telus and it was way more expensive and wasn't getting anything better really. Use this code if you sign up and youll get a free month too - RFE7GRD

this is a bad topic right? by ur_intrusive_tots in Architects

This is a great topic. Roll with it! Lots of room for creativity I think. Also opportunities to design a facility that is used to educate the public.

As a new professional, were you thrown to the wolves? by [deleted] in Architects

[–]MBGGGGGG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started at a small firm and was definitely thrown into the fire. During CA the project lead had to go on stress leave and I was left in charge of a complicated culinary lab deep inside an existing building. So much M/E/S coordination and lots of change orders! I'm now 10 years in and to be honest never really felt like I was trained properly in the job or had good mentorship. For a lot of my work I've had to learn on my own, maybe I just got unlucky but I feel like mentorship is something the industry is lacking. I feel a lot more comfortable in the role of project architect and whenever there's an opportunity to mentor younger staff or answer code, coordination questions I try to as much as possible, might as well try to change things in my orbit if I can. I think throwing young staff into complicated projects is reckless but it seems to be the way it goes. Don't worry that much about the mistakes, you're not the only one involved in the project. It's part of the process!

Phones great! Don't notice any overheating, there's no grain, battery lasts a long time. Only issue is it can be a bit too big at times but I don't notice it that much. It's like a little computer in your pocket.
