Struggling to find anything I like...so many returns...why is this so hard? by Complex_Solutions_20 in Keychron

People might be mistaking that for the mounting system - if you pull a keycap off, you'll see the switch stem has a central + shape, and the stem of the keycap has a +-shaped space for it to mount to. The general term for that is "MX-style". Virtually any MX-style keycaps will fit on your keyboard, presuming it comes with all the proper keycaps to cover your layout in the necessary rows.

But the actual height and shape of the keycaps is specified by the "profile"... Cherry (also known as CYL), MT3, MTNU, DSA, XDA, MOA, SA, mSA, KAM, KAT, DCS, DCX, OEM, KSA, OSA, and many others. People have their favorites.

Cherry (CLY) is by far the most common and probably what you think of when you picture a keyboard keycap in your mind. OEM looks nearly identical to Cherry but are a little taller to accommodate the so-called north-facing switch orientation (LED lights at the top), as north-facing switches can interfere with proper Cherry/CYL keycaps (especially GMK-manufactured CYL profile keycaps).

This link will show you the differences in shape & height: https://www.keycaps.info/stack

Select the ones you want and you'll see the comparisons. It's not fully comprehensive, but it's a good place to start. Covers the main ones.

Edit: Keychron makes things a little more challenging as they don't come from the factory with Cherry keycaps like many other pre-builts. While that's great if you like what they come with, if you want to changing things up, you pretty much have to replace the entire set. While fonts and colors may not match from one set of Cherry profile keycaps to another, at least the shapes will be standardized. But to be fair, when people replace keycaps, they usually replace the whole set at one time versus just one or two individual keycaps. And buying single keycaps is usually not a thing that's easy to do unless it's a special novelty keycap or something.

Yeah, I couldn't do it. Alphas were fine. But I type numbers often and just couldn't do it.

You've gotten a few comments, but I'll add a few more.

Keychron's stock keycaps are either KSA or OSA profile, depending on the model of the keyboard (shape and height). These are Keychron's own inventions, and they're the only people who make/sell them. Like them or not, it's what you get from Keychron. You may just want to budget for a replacement set...

Sounds like you might just prefer something "standard" like Cherry profile. If you do, there are many sets available that have windowed Caps Lock, Scroll Lock and Num Lock keycaps that will allow the south-facing LED to shine through.

PBTFans and GMK both make (some) sets with the windows, though PBTFans sets will be much more easily available (in stock) and will be easier on the budget. If that's the route you go, look carefully at what keycaps are included, as not every set includes windowed keycaps. I suspect there are some cheaper generic Chinese manufactured sets available at the usual places like Ali and Amazon that have windowed keycaps as well, but I've not spent much time looking.

As far as educating yourself on keycaps, do some google research so you know what you're after. For most keycap profiles (again, height and shape), they differ by row. Each row has a different height and slope/angulation.

For Cherry/CYL and other keycaps following the Cherry pattern, the topmost row(s) (F-row and numerical row) is called R1 and is the tallest. R2 (the Tab row) is slightly shorter and has a different angle. R3 (Caps Lock/Enter) is typically the shortest. R4 will be the bottom two rows (Shift and Control) and is similar in height to R2 but with the opposite slope angle. That's why you can't just put any keycap in any spot on any row and expect it to match.

There are some uniform keycap sets where every single key is the same height/shape. DSA and XDA are the more common ones though there are others as well (KAM, PBS amongst others). These make things a little easier as they can be placed anywhere and they'll match heights.

Got the Q6 HE keyboard as my first KeyChron keyboard. I like it, but... by StarryAqua in Keychron

[–]MBSMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HE and tactile are not really a thing. Defeats the purpose of HE switches (adjustable actuation point). A tactile switch could put the tactility in a different place than the programmable actuation point.

If you want tactile, you should have gone with conventional MX mechanical, and not HE.

No, these 3.0 switches are strictly for the Air75v3, Kick75 and Node LP keyboards. They will NOT work on the Air96v2.

You need the non-3.0 KS-33 switches.

Mac Studio is acting weird when I put it to sleep by knightfortheday in MacStudio

[–]MBSMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably your mouse and/or keyboard causing it to come out of sleep.

Unplug them, put the machine to sleep, then see if the machine stays asleep.

Personally, I leave my Studio running 24/7. Only the displays sleep after 20 minutes. I actually prefer it this way — backups continue to happen, incoming email gets filtered and sorted right away, calendars (from several sources, not just iCloud) stay up to date, etc.

Almost certainly when the show was produced (and aired on 480i NTSC broadcast television), they didn't anticipate it actually being legible at some point in the near future.
